M&Ms Line

There’s a favorite candy here in the United States, it’s called M&Ms ... or maybe they’re called M&Ms, I’m never quite sure about how to make implied plurals singular.

M&Ms are not unique, they have a similar candy product in the UK and other former parts of the crown called Smarties. And of course there are plenty of knock-offs, including Hersheyettes, Jots, Rocklets, Sun Drops and Garfield’s Chocobites. There are quite a few legends about how M&Ms and Smarties were invented, but suffice to say that they exist and that’s the important part.

image

Milk Chocolate M&Ms
imageYear Introduced: 1940
Mascot: smart-mouthed Red one (once voiced by Jon Lovitz, now Billy West)
What is it: milk chocolate center covered with a thin candy shell with a lower case “m” mark

You’re not crazy, they were once called Plain M&Ms, but in 2000 they shifted their name to Milk Chocolate M&Ms.

A little bit of trivia and history. The Ms in M&M stand for Forrest Mars and R. Bruce Murrie. Forrest Mars left his fathers candy company and partnered with Murrie to create the M&M. It took some help, which came from Murrie’s father, who ran the Hershey Chocolate company at the time. The technology behind the manufacture of M&Ms and even the chocolate itself came from Hershey’s factories. In the 60s Mars starting making their own chocolate and no longer needed to order it from Hershey.

Red M&Ms were discontinued in 1976 because of a scare with a food dye called Red Dye #2 (which was not used in M&Ms). At that time the colors in the M&M pack were: Green, Orange, Yellow, Light Brown & Dark Brown. The Red M&M returned in 1985, at first as part of the Holiday color mix then in the regular mix.

image

Peanut M&Ms
imageYear Introduced: 1954
Mascot: the dim-witted Yellow one (once voiced by John Goodman now J.K. Simmons)
What is it: A whole peanut center, a layer of chocolate and a thin candy shell with a lower case “m” mark

Overwhelmingly consistent in size, which is a credit to M&Ms production line choosing peanuts that are all the same size. The crunchy candy shell and slightly smoky tasting nuts combine well but overshadow the chocolate a smidge. But the chocolate provides a mellow sweetness and a creaminess during the final stages of chewing. I do get a bad peanut every once in a while, but usually not one every bag.

M&Ms were not a blazing success when they were launched, though they were well received. The trick for Mars was to figure out how to reach both their intended consumers (children) and the decision makers (parents). M&Ms were initially sold to the military during WWII, but Mars thought they were the perfect kids candy. Kids loved them, they just couldn’t convince their parents to buy them. It wasn’t until they hit upon their slogan, “melts in your mouth, not in your hands” that parents caught on that it was a less messy chocolate candy for kids. The rest is history.

image

Almond M&Ms
imageYear Introduced: 1988 (seasonal) 1992 (permanent)
Mascot: Blue (who looks about as dim as Yellow)
What is it: A whole almond covered in milk chocolate then a thin candy shell with a lower case “m” mark

Really, this is the perfect M&M, as far as I’m concerned. They almonds might not be top notch as they’re often small, but they’re fresh and crunchy and provide a good backdrop to the very sweet and slightly grainy chocolate.

image

Peanut Butter M&Ms
imageYear Introduced: 1990
Mascot: Green (those boots are made for walkin’ )
What is it: a little sphere of peanut butter inside a shell of milk chocolate and then a thin crunchy candy shell with a lower case “m” mark

These are very nice and satisfying, but I find them a little greasy and smoky tasting.

One of the interesting bits of trivia about M&Ms Peanut Butter is that there was a large lawsuit between Hershey & Mars when they first came out. Hershey accused Mars of trying to make them look like Reese’s Pieces - the packaging was the same color, the format of the bag, the type was in brown, etc. Now you’ll notice that the color is slightly shifted away from the Reese’s Orange (tm) to a reddish color.

image

Crispy M&Ms
imageYear introduced: 1998
Mascot: Red and Orange
What is it: a rice-based crisp center covered in milk chocolate and a thin candy shell with a lower case “m” mark

The look of these is terribly inconsistent, which strikes me as a little odd since you’d think they’d have more control over how big the crisp centers are than peanuts. The colors also weren’t quite the same, the green was a little light and the red was a little thin looking. I wasn’t able to find the American Crispy M&Ms, so I bought some Canadian ones. So the chocolate on these is slightly more milky tasting, which is an interesting, malty complement to the crispy center. A little sweet, a little bland.

Dovetailing with the earlier issue with Reese’s & Peanut Butter M&Ms, you’ll notice that the Crispy M&Ms are positioned to rival the Nestle Crunch Bar, which is really all they are, a little Crunch bar in a shell. The light blue and use of the Red M&M echoes the Nestle Crunch colors.

image

Dark Chocolate M&Ms
imageYear Introduced: 2006
Mascot: Green (voiced by Cree Summer in commercials - she’s reclining in this package)
What is it: darker chocolate center covered in a thin candy shell with lowercase “m” mark and sometimes “m dark”

These have a smoky and darker flavor than the milk M&Ms, but also a little note of coconut. The ingredients also list skim milk, milkfat and lactose, so I’m not sure how they’re considered “dark chocolate.” They’re gorgeously shiny and consistent, so consider me tempted when they’re sitting in front of me. There’s currently an additional reward of 2 million Dark M&Ms being offered for the return of The Scream.

image

White Chocolate M&Ms “Pirate Pearls” (Limited Edition)
imageYear Introduced: 2006 (limited edition)
Mascot: Green (with black boots)
What is it: white chocolate covered in a thin candy shell with a lower case “m” mark and sometimes a little pictogram worked into it (cannon, crossed swords, ship, spyglass, skull and hook) that come in special colors (white, aqua, light yellow, cream)

Yup, white chocolate in a candy shell. They’re nice enough, but just too sweet for me. They’re okay when you eat them in combination with other M&Ms (especially the Dark ones), but I’m not sure I’ll buy these again and I won’t protest if they don’t end up as a permanent item.

Other versions of M&Ms over the years: Dulce de Leche (2001), Mega (still around), Minis (still around), Spec-tacular Eggs (seasonal), Mint (seasonal) and of course many color promotions and movie tie ins. Then there are other M’azing things done with them that I’ve never gotten on board with.

There has never been an M&Ms gum ... but I’m not saying it won’t happen.

Have you had enough of M&Ms? If not, check out these scans of knock-offs, Brad Kent’s wrapper collection (you’ll have to search for M&Ms to find them all), how they’re made, some more history, Candy Critic’s M&M Destruction Project, a Century of Candy Bars (there are pictures of M&Ms wrappers through the years) and if you’re still obsessed, join the M&M Collectors Club (they collect the merchandise, not the actual candies).

The product line gets a 9 out of 10. I might not like every variety, but they’re a great product and really do make snacking fun.

  1. I SO SO wish they’d bring back the Dark Chocolate Peanut M&M’s, that they did for Star Wars Episode III, the Dark side of the force . . .

I’m not usually a dark chocolate gal, but these . . . oooh la la, they were HEAVEN, and I could NOT stop eating them were they set in front of me. The stronger taste of the chocolate helped it so the peanut didn’t overwhelm it, like it does in the milk chocolate version.

Perfecto! I WANT THIS CANDY! Lol.

  2. Talk about back to basics, that would make the perfect permanant intro to Candyblog. Speaking of the crunch bar, what did you think of the M&M’s ‘Mazing’ bars?

  4. i saw the dark chocolate m&ms; back in a store the other day, but dangit, i can’t find the white ones anymore! i am going to have to stockpile if i find any…

fortunately (for wedding-related reasons) i emailed m&ms; last year to ask how long they last if you don’t open the bag (and don’t freeze them) and they said a year.

  5. Dark choco with peanuts! Oh I pray they bring them back. They were the best!

Good work on all those reviews, too! Can you believe, I was non-plussed by the almond ones, but maybe I should try them again.

  6. I’ve always loved M&M’s but was THRILLED when the Peanut Butter ones came out. When I was little, there was a peanutty candy called “Oompa’s” (?) that were made by Willy Wonka. I don’t know whatever became of those but the Peanut Butter M&M’s are similar enough to make me happy. I also enjoy the Almond M&M’s. I’m still wishing for a mixed bag of all the flavors. Maybe not the Crispy ones. I don’t care for them at all.

  7. I’ve had some Dark Chocolate ones sitting in my candy box for over a month, thinking I’d write about them. I felt a sort of sense of duty about the whole thing, but just couldn’t get excited enough about them to say much. I mean, they taste just fine, but not different enough to warrant a “new product” as far as I’m concerned. Thanks for picking up the slack…

I can’t even honestly say that I’d be able to tell them apart from the original milk M+M’s in a blind taste test. What GIVES with the adding of milk to “dark” chocolate? Why can’t they be truly DARK chocolate? Would that be such a crime?

  8. The Peanut Butter ones are my favorite! I’d say “Plain” (yes, I like calling them “Plain” better…I also liked it when they had light brown instead of the ugly blue color) or Almond.

    Great review!

PS: Thanks for the tootsie pop help btw. smile

  9. Did you ever get a chance to try the caramel M&Ms; they had about four years ago? They only sold them in a limited number of places, I got mine in Florida, they were really good, I wish they had decided to market them more widely. They weren’t caramel like a Milk Dud, it was more like caramely flavor mixed into the chocolate, very good.

  10. We get M&Ms; in the UK too. But only the chocolate, peanut and crispy varieties.

Personally I love the Almond and Peanut Butter varieties. But we don’t get those. So I have to get people to bring them over for me. Fortunately my father-in-law spends a lot of time travelling back and forth, so I’m rarely without a fix….

  12. I initially read the title as “M&Ms; Lime” and thought, “Hey that sounds different!” But then read the first review and thought, “Well i guess she’s doing the regular varieties first.” Got to the end and DISSAPOINTMENT. That’ll teach me to read more carefully.
I think i tried the peanut butter ones once (they were imported). I’m sad to say i can’t remember much about them. I was eating some reece cups at the time and i remember they didn’t compare favourably. But i’d really like to try them again!

Sara & Julilla - I never got to try the dark peanut M&Ms;, but now I’m really sorry I didn’t.

GTO - I tried the M’azing bars about a year ago, I bought a bunch of them on clearance thinking that they were discontinued. After I tasted them, I thought for sure they’d discontinued them. Yet I still see them in store.

Travis ... um, yeah. But I don’t feel like going through and fixing it. Can’t we just call it an artistic liberty?

Suzanne - I remember the Oopma Loompas - they were half & half. One half was peanut butter and the other milk chocolate. They were kind of big too, not quite the size of a Mega M&M but definitely bigger than the current Peanut Butter M&Ms;. Wonka got out of the chocolate business pretty quick and concentrated on the sugar candies for a long time.

Joanna - perhaps we should storm Nestle & Mars and ask them why they think that their lame “dark” chocolate isn’t milk chocolate!

Sera - I really miss those light brown ones too. They just looked so chocolatey ... blue is NOT a chocolate flavor. Not even a color I want to eat.

Anne-Marie - I was wondering if there was a caramel too and I only found notes about Dulce de Leche (like Scott mentions) and I think that’s what they were. I only had them once and wasn’t really thrilled with them.

Andy - why on earth wouldn’t they sell the Almond ones over there? I understand how peanut butter is kind of a North American fascination, but Almonds are global!

Dave - now I’ve got a hankering for the mint ones. I’m sure if I scoured the local 99 cent and clearance stores I could find some leftovers (and then be sorely disappointed).

Leigh - mmm, citrus M&Ms;. I think orange M&Ms; could be pretty good. I know that UK Smarties have orange flavored ones ... but the Canadian ones I’ve had don’t. Key Lime & White Chocolate might be nice.

Pam - hooray for finding them!

Janet - I know nothing about Chinese chocolates, but you should definitely try White Rabbit milk taffy, it’s pretty good! Let me know what they have over there.

Sunny - grab the white ones while you can! I have a feeling they’ll bring them back every once in a while. I would probably buy them at Easter if they decided to do a seasonal mix.

Scott - yeah, I think you’re right about the Dulce, or maybe they gave them a different name in different parts of the country.

  21. In 1985, M&M’s released HOLIDAYS Chocolates, which, as we all know, are red and green for Christmas.

However, when they debuted, they had Christmas symbols on them, instead of the trademark “M”. Who made the decision to change the symbols to the M, as well as the decision to discontinue marketing/making HOLIDAYS?

  22. Also, I’ve done a search, and can’t find out why the Mint M&M’s aren’t part of their product line, even though they DO make them (Meaning there are 6 flavors in their product line, not counting the Minis or Baking Bits: Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter, Almond, Crispy, and Mint), and as far as I know, the Mint comes out only during the holiday season. So, why did they leave out Mint in their product line on the M&M’s website, even though they DO make it?

  23. M&Ms; do not taste the same as they used to because IN THE YEAR 2O00 THEY WERE CHANGED TO USING SKIM MILK / MILKFAT and they taste like crap now because of it!! (They used to use regular milk which gave them BETTER FLAVOR.)

The company lied to me for 1 year trying to say “We didnt change anything but the wrapper”,but if you look @ the ingredients and taste them, you know they did!!!! (All thier candy tastes like crap now due to this!!)

SKIM MILK IS GARBAGE and thats why they taste bad…... I have been trying for MANY YEARS to get them to change it back…...

Maybe you guys could help also

    http://tinyurl.com/dnnmm

Just fill out that form with your comments about not liking the new taste!! (We all know skim milk is crap compared to regular milk) (They changed in 2000 .. Thats the only change!!)

  29. Hey Guys!
I just wanted to jump in here to say how much I love Peanut M&M’s. I think as a child you really take advantage of the taste of candy and don’t take the time to sit and really enjoy the sensation of eating a candy coated chocolate covered peanut. Even just saying that alliteration makes my mouth water. So I hadn’t had Peanut M&M’s for awhile, then one day while on a regular trip to my local 711 I glanced at a pack and it was like, “Hello old friend. It’s been awhile” so I bought that pack, and it was one of the best decisions I have made in my entire life. I love the progression of biting into the candy coating then the chocolate then finally reaching the highly anticipated perfectly salted peanut. Just writing about this puts my mouth into a frenzie. I don’t know how I went so long before without these amazing creations in my life. I certainly can not imagine my life being fulfilled without my daily candy coated chocolate cover climax.

    Signing off,

    J. Geremia…. wait that is too obvious
    Julie G.

Richard - If you look on the M&Ms; official site they have breakdowns of the average proportion of colors:

    http://us.mms.com/us/about/products/milkchocolate/

(Click through to the other products and they have different color proportions.)

It can vary, of course. As experiments go, it might be interesting to pick up the actual bags and check. I’d love it if you reported back on your real-world findings.

Yes, our class will investigate what I am inquiring about, but like all experiments conducted in the classroom, a little reseach must be done in order to make a hypothesis. I did find some information about the quantities in each bag. On March 8, 2007 we will do the actual investigation, create a graph, and compare four bags of M&M’s from 4 different stores. Gladly get back with you on the results

  34. This is my list of Ranking of M&M’s.
      Best- Almond (Nice taste)
      2.- Peanut
      3.-Crispy
      4. Peanut Butter
      5. Milk chocolate (these r overrated and 2 chocolatey)
      6. Dark Chocolate (Overrated not that great. Worst Flavor. Dark chocolate with peanuts wasnt bad though)
White Chocolate ones r pretty good, mint chocolate are good. I wish I had been alive to try the Caramel Ones I’m 14 years old and born October 1992. Sniff. By the way anyone know what happened to the Crispy ones. It’s been like a year since I’ve had them and I wanted to try them atleast once more before they could be discontinued. Anyone know the scoop on Crispy M&m’s in America?

  35. You were wondering how to pronounce M&Ms;. Most people say the name like this, “M n’ Ms” so it’s not really M and M, more the the n’ is a short way of saying and or something.

I just realized the dark chocolate M&Ms; have lactose in it too, and I’m lactose intolerant. :O
I figure the amount of lactose in it must be substantially less than the amount that would be in milk chocolate. So far I haven’t had any of the typical lactose side-effects I get.

I use dark chocolate to help me sleep since I’m an insomniac. They say at Wikipedia it has tryptophan in it, as well as flavanoids which are good for you. So I figure it’s a good natural way to sleep. I’ve tried sleeping pills, and they were not good for me.

Comment by Jackie on 5/04/07 at 12:23 am #
  36. I just read The Dude’s post about them using skim milk vs whole milk. As someone who has lactose intolerance, I think they changed over to skim milk so more people could enjoy their product. As in, a wider audience.

I just want you to consider that if they went back to whole milk, there would be thousands of lactose intolerant people not able to enjoy M&Ms;. So think of them..perhaps you could just suggest they make whole milk M&Ms; as a product on it’s own.

Thanks for the post on these…brought back a lot of memories that were collecting cobwebs!

  51. Hey, does anyone know if there is a place to turn in empty M&M;?s wrappers for gifts?
Years ago, an M&M;?s rep told me that there was going to be a catalog and payment was in wrappers, I thought that was a cool idea.
Maybe they can do a campaign and ?sell? m&m;?s merchandise, promo it good for one year grin

  52. How come you didn’t mention anything about the disappearance of the light brown M&M;‘s?

Also, the dark ones give me a terrible headache (something in them is giving me an allergic reaction I guess) so I can not eat them. Makes me wonder what they put in them as I have never gotten a reaction from chocolate before.

  53. PLEASE tell me that Mega Peanut M&Ms;haven’t been discontinued! These were such awesome candies. Often I went to one of the few stores where they were sold, they were sold out; someone other than me was aware of them. I think if they didn’t sell well, it’s because of poor marketing because they were awesome. BRING THEM BACK!

    my question is
why don’t the mars co. put the same amount of m&ms; in all the packs?
i was just curious because we have a bio test tomarrow and i wanted to know the answer, just in case my teacher askes that question.
nice job with the information. :D

  68. Orange flavored M&M’s exist now! I don’t know if they are in the US, but I found them in Taiwan and they were exported from Australia, and I’ve read that they are available in Russia too. I haven’t tried them yet(waiting for them to firm up in the fridge- chocolate tends to get soft/melty here in Taiwan due to the humidity and heat and I like my chocolate hard/crisp), but they sure smell good- you can smell they right through the bag.

Yes this may be BUT THEY SHOULD KEPT THE ORIGINAL RECIPES GOING!!! (And labeled this new crap: DIET CANDY (M&Ms;,milky ways, etc))

I used to love them all until they went skim milk!!

  74. My husband was an M & Ms candy “tester” in the first grade for the Mars Candy Company, Newark, NJ, circa 1943. He was paid, big $$$, at the time, with other first graders from Colombian Grammar School in East Orange, NJ. for a period of approx. 2 months during WWII when M & Ms were only going to the troops, not the public. Looking for other testers, if still alive. People love this story, especially since hubby is a practicing pediatrician/allergist who was allergic to chocolate as a child. Where are those other kids??????

bellia - that is incorrect. They use Red 40, which is made from crude oil.

I believe you’re referring to carmine or cochineal, which is made from whole bugs, not their excrement. That’s considered a natural dye, though not vegetarian.

  79. I bought a 6 pack of peanut M&M’s and one of the 6 was completely empty :/

M&Ms; are and have been my favorite for a long time.. I don’t know which is my favorite.. regular, peanut or dark.. I don’t venture outside of those 3 very often.. but I have tried the peanut butter and the pretzel ones.. they were good too.. but I stick to what I know most of the time wink

Robert - this post is 10 years old, so it was true at the time. In fact, it was true until Mars re-introduced Crispy in January 2015. They’re actually different now, here’s the review.
