Cherry Almondine M&Ms

Cherry Almondine M&MsLast year M&Ms introduced a limited special tin of eight new gourmet flavors. They were sold only through their website. They were absurdly expensive (I think it was $49 for the set in a tin) and I never saw anyone review them.

Flash forward to a year later and I was reading on Chocolate Bytes that Heather found what I think are individual bags of some of those gourmet M&Ms. She picked up Cherry Almondine and Vanilla Crisp at the Las Vegas M&Ms World. Since my husband was off to NYC, I sent him to the M&Ms World in Times Square to see if he could find the Vanilla Crisp for me. Sadly, all they had were Cherry Almondine, which he picked up anyway.

The stand up bag announces these as a Special Edition (not limited edition, I’m not sure of the difference). The package also describes them, “freshly roasted almonds wrapped in cherry flavored white chocolate.” Sounds enticing (if you like white chocolate, cherries and almonds).

The M&Ms come in two colors, a dark marooon and a creamy beige. They smell an awful lot like cherry cough drops. The crispy shell is great and the almonds, though small, are truly fresh and tasty. The white chocolate with cherry? Well, it is strong. It’s not too sweet, but the cherry is quite a kick in the head. There’s no tangy bite to it, it’s just all sweet and nutty and of course cherry.

I do have to admit that I’m coming around on my dislike of cherry things and found these pleasant and they were certainly a hit on a long bike ride that I took on Sunday. (I got the empty package back from my bud and our ride organizer, Will, at the end of the trip.)

At $6 a bag, I don’t think these are special enough to warrant buying them again. Koppers does far better interesting flavor mixes and on the whole if I were looking for a quick almond treat, I’d pick up the Milk Chocolate Almond M&Ms which have never disappointed me.

There’s no word if M&Ms is making any of the other gourmet Special Edition flavors like Crunchy Cookie Mint. Keep your eye out if you’re in an M&Ms World store.

  1. I have also seen these specialty M&Ms; at Target.  They had a few different kinds, but I thought they were too expensive for a tiny bag.

  2. Oh, no. Cherry? Couldn’t they have started with mint or caramel or….anything else? Cherry brings back horrible memories of childhood cough syrup. Blech.

  3. My Target has specialty M&Ms;, too - the only ones I can remember for sure are this cherry almondine and an orange something-or-another. I keep waiting for them to be marked down a little so i can try them!

  4. You are so very lucky lucky in the US… we don’t get anything this exotic over here in Australia.  The only “special edition” M&Ms; I have seen over here are the green and white mint ones.. which were yummy! I’d die for a cherry almondine!

  5. I have seen these all over the place, at Targets, at Walgreens…Haven’t tried any of them yet, but they have all the varieties I remember seeing last year in that ridiculously priced set.  Good luck to anyone looking for them! The mint one sounds especially good.

  6. I was in M&M World in Las Vegas in March. I remembered seeing an article mentioning the tin of 8 flavors in InStyle Magazine and I asked the clerk if they had flavored M&Ms;. Indeed, the store was just putting out bags of the new flavored M&Ms; as I was asking. Talk about timing! They had a lot of flavors—I can recall off the top of my head a vanilla flavor, capuccino, dark chocolate cherry and a chocolate mint, in addition to the cherry almondine, and an orange flavor. There may have even been more flavors. They were running a special 3 for $15, so I bought the cappucino and chocolate cherry. Both were delicious!!! I was in NYC recently and stopped in M&M World in Times Square for a refill. They said that they only had them once and after they sold out, they did not get them in again.  I was very disappointed. I am glad to hear that Target is beginning to sell these items… I may make a special trip to my local Target to check out the selection. They really were that good!

  9. I looked in my local Target yesturday and I didn’t see these. *sniff*

I DID see that Ghirardelli has released the Vanilla White Chocolate Squares that I’ve only seen previously sold in their branch stores (in Downtown Disney where I was there in April). That made me happy. smile

  10. i bought a bag of the orange ones 3 weeks ago and right now there’s still a good 1/4 of the bag left in my office, not because there were so many but because they were overpowering

i’m usually a fan of orange chocolate, but these were stronger i thought. This did not mix well when you eat them like normal m&m’s, fast and a few at a time. i find myself eating one or two, then maybe coming back to them much later, but i tend to want something else.

At $4 a bag it’s not something that i’m going to get on an even semi-regular basis. There are much better ways to get an orange-chocolate fix. If you want to try these i’d wait til target puts them on sale.

  11. They still had these at Target last week so i don’t know how limited edition they really are.  I am afraid to try them since they are about 4 dollars a bag and i am unsure if i am acutally going to like them.

  12. I brought back the vanilla crisp and orange cream to London from the NYC store and love them, especially the orange ones. Wish we could get them over her in the UK. Guess i will just have to take another trip to NYC.
