Limited Edition M&Ms Coconut

M&Ms Limited Edition CoconutHot on the tails of the Limited Edition Strawberried Peanut Butter M&Ms will be the release of Limited Edition Coconut M&Ms in August. (More here)

The cream colored packet holds 1.5 ounces of green, white and brown milk chocolate morsels flavored with coconut.

As with most limited editions, the package is a bit slighter than the regular products. This one clocks in at 1.5 ounces instead of the normal 1.69 in a Milk Chocolate M&Ms pack.

Coconut M&Ms

The package is cute and playful, featuring Ms. Green reclining in the sand, leaning against a coconut filled with coconut M&Ms. In the background the Yellow Peanut M&M is falling out of a coconut palm laden with more coconuts.

The contents smell much like most M&Ms, sweet and slightly woodsy but only the slightest whiff of coconut.

M&Ms Limited Edition Coconut

The individual lentils are a bit puffier than regular M&Ms, though not as big as the Peanut Butter variety.

Inside they’re just milk chocolate but with an added touch of coconut flavoring (but no actual coconut to be found in the ingredients).

The chocolate is fudgy, the flavor is a little salty and tropical but with a strange yogurty tang (kind of like Hershey’s) ... the crunch of the shell is crisp.

On the whole, it’s a nice change-up, very appealing. It’s not something that I think deserves to be made part of the regular repertoire. But see the review on Hershey’s Almond Joy Pieces.

UPDATE 9/29/2009: Mars has announced that M&MS Coconut will become part of their permanent line of candies. You can expect them in stores starting in December 2009.

  4. These look good, but the Almond Joy pieces look even better.  I think I’ll have to try both when they show up.

BTW, for any Zelda fans out there, when I first saw the package I thought Yellow looked like a golden skulltula hanging from the tree. smile

  5. I was sad to see that these don’t actually contain coconut, especially considering the future Almond Joy pieces will. I would LOVE to bit into a little chocolate with coconut.

  8. found these yesterday at my local grocery store.  I was surprised to see them so soon.  They are ok, but I think that if I really wanted coconut I would rather have something that actually had coconut in it.

  11. Found these at the Dollar Tree in Portland. I think I paid 50? for a 1.5 oz pack. Might want to hit those stores up if you can’t find them anywhere else. Tastes good but like others have said, REAL coconut would have been a nice touch!

  27. I LOVE the coconut M&M’s!!!  I found them in a vending machine in a small town park in Virginia a couple weeks ago while on vacation and have been searching for them ever since!  I even called the M&M’s company to see where they are.  If you call and give them your zip code and last name they will put in a recommendation for them to stay around.

  29. We had these Coconut M&M’s at my job and they were the biggest hit ever.  Everyone comes by and asks if there are anymore.  Unfortunately, we have not seen anymore in our area.  We bought every bag the store had.  Hopefully they hit the general market soon because these are the best M&M’s.  Not too much coconut but you can definitely taste the flavor of coconut!!!!  Love it!!!!

  69. EXCELLENT! Please KEEP!!!!!  I found them while I was on vacation at Walgreen’s in Grayling, MI.  Now I can’t find them locally & I am desperate!  In 2002 I bought a case of dulce de leche m&ms; off e-bay- I don’t want to go to that extreme again:)

  70. Found the coconut M&M’s at the checkout counter at Walgreens, it’s the only place I’ve seen them… Since I like coconut and chocolate, I was curious and bought a bag.  They were very good!  It’s a nice summery alternative to plain M&M’s and I hope you keep them as part of the M&M “family”.  Sometimes you feel like a coconut and sometimes you don’t.

  101. In July I found them while camping in Minnesota. I don’t like plan M&M’s but I love coconut so I bought one bag and really like them. Went back and bought three more. When I got home to Wisconsin found pound bags at Wal-Mart. So glad to hear they are bringing them back in December.

  106. Looked for these for 2 weeks and found them yesterday at a Walgrens on sale for $.69 (along with the Cherry Limited edition). As coconut hounds, we were very excited to finally be able to try them. And were just as disappointed. Only a couple of the M&Ms; actually had any hint of coconut flavor (and then just barely), the rest tasted like regular M&Ms;. thank goodness we did not order the case online like we almost did. Wouldn’t buy them again. On the otherhand, the cherry ones were better than expected and had a cherry flavor consistently throughout all of the candies. Would buy those again

  108. OMG - These M&M’s are Heaven!!  My son saw them in a vending machine at school and brought a pack home to me.  I’ve been on a mission ever since to find a big bag….  so far, no luck, but he did find more small packs at Sheetz.  They’re hard to find in any size….
I do hope Mars adds these to the list of regular products - they are wonderful!!

    S. Nelson - The Coconut M&Ms; have been added to Mars list of regular products (as was mentioned at the end of the post). The new “non-limited-edition” packages should be hitting stores now. I found them at Dollar Tree, Target and a local newssstand.

  116. For those of you looking for these, you can find a 24 pk box on amazon. Runs about $28 I believe. Kinda pricey, but until the hit the big stores it’ll have to do!!!

  122. These are pretty good, I prefer the new Almond Joy Pieces though! :D

I even have a blog post dedicated to seeing which one people like more!

If you haven’t tried either of them, get both! They’re both pretty tasty.

  123. I’m looking for the Mint M&Ms; that they have at Christmas (not the Green Limited ones), but…...for all you Coconut, um, Nuts, try the Costco Business Center (not a regular Costco, but your regular Costco card will get you in).  They have them in boxes of 24 bags for $13.62.

  129. Did I see something about Dark Chocolate coffee beans?  Yummm… Sounds Wonderful!!!

Comment by Maureen on 8/17/10 at 7:51 pm #
  130. It’s totally mislead on the part of M&M’s
The picture on the bag leads the consumer into believing it’s actual coconut inside the candy. It happens to be coconut flavoring.

I found the candy to have a slight minty flavoring rather than anything resembling coconut and chocolate.

I pictured an actual coconut center just like the Mounds bar but was disappointed in biting into chocolate and coconut flavoring

I’ll stick to the plain and peanut M&M’s

  134. I love these! I prefer them to the Hershey’s Almond Joy Pieces. I felt these had the strong coconut flavor I was looking for and Hershey’s tasted very little like their counterpart.

  135. Just saw these at the store the other day and almost fell over because I’d never heard of it and got super excited.

  136. I saw these at our little grocery store when they were on sale. They are good but I wish they had a little more coconut flavor. It’s a nice addition to the M&M’s family. I’m still waiting to see a large bag of mixed M&M’s; plain, peanut and peanut butter. Heaven…

Comment by Suzanne on 3/21/12 at 1:44 pm #
  137. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these candies! I first found them in Florida and now they are here in Kentucky. My local Wal Mart stopped carrying them, which has me bummed out, but I absolutely love these things and will buy a case next time I see them! I love the coconut flavor without worrying about picking little pieces of coconut out of my teeth! I love these things!
