Wonka SweeTarts Chicks, Ducks & Bunnies (2012)

Wonka SweeTarts Chicks Ducks & BunniesOne of the earlier reviews I did on Candy Blog of a favorite Easter candy was for Wonka SweeTarts Chicks, Ducks & Bunnies. They were large SweeTarts in the shape of spring animals. At that time they came in Cherry, Lemon, Green Apple and Grape. Later, around 2008, the flavors were shifted to include the Blue Punch, Grape and Cherry only.

What I loved about the Easter edition was the flavor set, which really only had one flavor I didn’t like (Cherry) and the extremely dense and large pieces (over one inch across). See this photo from the 2006 package. They sounded like plastic poker chips and were so much harder that they required an entirely different eating method from the less dense tablets.

Wonka SweeTarts

This year, not only has the flavor set been changed but the size as well. It’s a different product for those of us who loved the former. It’s more like the Valentine’s edition. They now have a more traditional set of flavors: Orange, Grape, Cherry, Blue Punch and Green Apple. (No Lemon.) They still come in the shape of chicks, bunnies and ducks, but they’re quite small now, less than half an inch across.

Orange and Grape are exactly like the tablets from the roll. They’re tart, almost to the point that they’re salty. The grape is completely artificial, like a grape soda. The orange is bland, like a more sour version of Kool-Aid. The Cherry is quite strong, more on the woodsy side than the medicinal version. It’s sour, like a sour cherry flavor, not a black cherry or wild cherry. The Green Apple is tasty, and quite sour with less flavor than some other green apple candies. The Blue Punch flavor came along after my obsession with SweeTarts waned, which is good, because I really don’t care for it, even though it is one of the more intensely flavored pieces in the mix and doesn’t get messed up with a red flavor after taste.

Wonka SweeTarts

The little guys do actually stand up and they’re molded on both sides, I appreciate that attention to detail. The flavor set is now 3/5 in my wheel house, which are not great odds. I really only love the orange and grape and will eat the green apple. The cherry and blue punch are equally artificial in their flavoring, but just not to my liking. I could probably go back to giving these at 10 out of 10 if lemon was still in there. How could you have something called a SweeTart without the one fruit that actually is exactly that?

I’m disappointed that the special-ness of the SweeTarts Chicks, Ducks & Bunnies is now gone. They were different from all the other SweeTarts candies, they were large but also more substantial and really wonderfully pressed. There’s really nothing wrong with these, except that they’re missing the lemon ... which is a very nice pastel color that fits right in with the season plus the fact that little ducks and chicks are actually yellow. But there’s no need for me to stock up on these.

  1. Another notch in the Wonka “reduced size” column.  How interesting.
I noticed this same trait earlier this afternoon in a different Wonka candy. I picked up a box of Wonka Gobstoppers and was stunned at how tiny they’ve become since I was a kid.  A decade (or two) ago I remember they were larger and changed flavors several different times.  These new smaller Gobstoppers were so tiny they only had one extra layer in there.  No matter how you spin it; that ain’t everlasting.

  2. I haven’t eaten these in a few years, and had no idea they were redone! I liked the large format and the original flavors. Based on your description and review, I won’t be buying these. Another favorite gone. :-(

  3. I actually was very disappointed about the change and let Nestle know on their website.  I too won’t be stocking up on these like I have in the past.

  7. I was so disappointed when I opened a bag of the Chicks, Ducks and Bunnies this year. I called the number on the bag 1-800-504-4018 and was able to file a complaint. They also have a facebook page on which you can leave comments http://www.facebook.com/wonka?sk=wall.

  8. The new version is awful. They were much better before this “improvement.” We use to buy several bags and stock up because they were my family’s favorite. I won’t be repurchasing at all. What a shame!

  9. I am disappointed with the new edition. I loved the bigger SweeTarts and the flavor set. They now remind me of vitamins.

  10. The chicks, ducks and bunnies have been my absolute favorite candy so for the last 4-5 years I buy 15 or more bags so that they last the entire year. Somehow I manage to have a couple of bags come the next season. But this year I was very disappointed to find that they had change my favorite candy. I will still probably buy a bunch but probably not as much as I used to. I really hope they go back to the three flavors and larger size.

    Sad times.

  13. I agree with the rest of you.  Really disappointed.  I really liked the easter chicks ducks and bunnies because of the size and they seemed to be less dense.  I mean they melted in your mouth.  Not like these new ones where you have to bite into them to get any flavor and then you almost break a tooth.  Like the rest another favorite gome :(

  14. Ugh I have just visited Walmart, king snoopers, and wal greens and none of them have me lovey ducks and chicks.  Just googled it because. Was ver curious and mowing just fond out. These seem really really awful and I don’t think these all be my favorite. I hope before this Easter they will bring them back. I have. Found them in my basket for five years. They were my favorite! I am so mad now that
I know they are gone. I hate tha the are so small nw, and so many favors. Dang it!

  15. This was my favorite Easter candy too (key word “was”) that I always stocked up on since none of the other seasonal Sweetarts were quite as good. Now they are just the same as the Valentine ones and whatever other holiday that I don’t even know about b/c I don’t like these little ones. I live in Puerto Rico and was looking all over and eventually had my boyfriend mail me 2 bags from the states. I was sooo excited and then sooo disappointed when I actually opened my package :( Bring back the classics! And the lemon flavor! Why would they change something already perfect?

  16. Like many of you, i would buy every bag of chicks, ducks and bunnies i could get my hands on!  Not any more and i have not been able to find any left over any where either.  i hope the company will revisit this very bad decision.  can someone find a telephone number to a real human being so we can call and voice our opinions?  i am ready to join the movement!

  18. Came across this blog by googling the candy name and “smaller.”  I too am outraged.  They have ruined this candy.  It used to be my absolute favorite candy.  I bought a year supply every Easter.  First they screwed up the flavors but this is unforgivable.  The main reason these candies were awesome was the size and density.  Now they’re basically the same as the regular candies.  Will never buy them again unless they revert to the old ones.

  19. Candy Warehouse claims to have the old style large chicks, bunnies, and ducks but I am skeptical that they just haven’t updated the description.  All the reviews are months old—I can’t imagine Nestle is still producting both items.  If they have the old ones, my guess is they’re probably leftover supply which may be old (they get too hard after about 4-6 months in my experience):
