This Week in Candy Blog History: July Week 3

Hot Tamales

It’s pretty hot over most the United States this summer. Even in more mild years I’ve tended to avoid chocolate purchases because it just ends up in a sticky puddle before I get to eat it.

Posting here will be a little lighter for the next few weeks. You’ll get fresh reviews at least twice a week and this roundup of posts from the pasts on Wednesday.

Cupcake BitesNow that cupcakes are ubiquitous, it seems a bit odd to make a candy out of them. But Taste of Nature, makers of Cookie Dough Bites, did just that with Cupcake Bites.

Name: Cupcake Bites
Brand: Candy ASAP or Taste of Nature
Place Purchased: 99 Cent Only Store (Hollywood)
Price: $1.25
Size: 3.1 ounces
Calories per ounce: 142
Type: Cookie
Rating: 4 out of 10

Jolly Rancher Awesome Twosome ChewJolly Ranchers are pretty much perfect the way they are, dense and intense, portable and pretty cheap. (I wish they came in minty flavors.) So you can imagine I wasn’t that keen on this new version of the candy which really has nothing to do with what makes Jolly Ranchers awesome.

Name: Jolly Rancher Awesome Twosome Chews
Brand: Hershey’s
Place Purchased: samples from Sweets & Snacks Expo
Price: $.89
Size: 1.8 ounces
Calories per ounce: 100
Type: Chew/Sour
Rating: 3 out of 10

ToffifayI was excited to include Toffifay finally on Candy Blog. They were one of my favorite candies as a teen and one that I actually still buy as an adult even with all this other candy in my world. (I was pleased at how the photos turned out, too.)

Name: Toffifay (Toffifee)
Brand: Storck
Place Purchased: KMart (Park LaBrea)
Price: $2.49
Size: 4.3 ounces
Calories per ounce: 145
Type: Chocolate/Nuts/Caramel
Rating: 8 out of 10

Musk Flavored SticksFor a while my Aussie readers kept telling me to try Musk Sticks. I didn’t even understand what that could be. I did find some Musk Life Savers and thought that they were interesting, but wondered if the perfumed flavor was just a mistake. Turns out that’s really what they’re supposed to taste like. I realize now that the Musk Sticks that I did find were from one of the lesser brands, but I’m not sure if the quality was what was holding back my love.

Name: Musk Flavored Sticks
Brand: Black Gold
Place Purchased: Mel & Rose’s Wine & Spirits
Price: $3.00
Size: 7 ounces
Calories per ounce: unknown
Type: Chalk
Rating: 5 out of 10

JujyfruitsIn 2007 I went on a kick to review lots of the theater box candies. One of my favorites for the review were Jujyfruits & Jujubes, because they’re inimitable classics.

Name: Jujyfruits & Jujubes
Brand: Heide (Farley’s & Sather)
Place Purchased: Dollar Tree
Price: $1.00
Size: 7.8 ounces & 6.5 ounces
Calories per ounce: 85 & 78

Rating: 5 out of 10

Coffee ChocolatesIn 2006 I had my first opportunity to visit the All Candy Expo (now called the Sweets & Snacks Expo) in Chicago. There was a crazy amount of candy there, but I knew I struck gold with these samples from Anthon Berg filled chocolates. Again, part of the attraction was that they were so fun to photograph.

Brand: Anthon Berg
Place Purchased: All Candy Expo samples
Price: unknown
Size: varies
Calories per ounce: unknown
Type: Chocolate/Coffee
Rating: 8 out of 10

In 2005 I’d barely started the blog and was still finding my way around the planet through confectionery. It was then that my obsession with black sugar and all things molasses and brown sugar started. I made my first online purchase of candy from Japan.

Name: Kuro Ame
Brand: Kasugai
Place Purchased:
Price: $2.00
Size: 200 grams
Calories per ounce: unknown
Type: Hard Candy
Ratings - Kuro Ame - 6 out of 10
Pocket Black Sugar Throat Treatment Candy - 7 out of 10

  1. Jujyfruits are one of my favourites too. It’s like eating the middle of a jellybean.
    I’ve found Toffifay at Aldi.
And I think that like Vegemite, musk is a flavour just for Australians. Though most of my musk sticks were eaten as a child I worked with a guy who every lunch would go down to the Milk Bar and buy a paper bag full of the pink sugary things.
