Sour Extinguisher

Sour ExtinguisherFollowing up on yesterday’s Starburst Sour, I thought I’d tackle some real sour stuff. I found Sour Extinguisher at the 7-11 a few weeks ago and thought it was a cute idea. There are three different flavors with different levels of sour along with an “extinguisher” that puts out the sour burn.

The first thing I noticed was that the “randomness” of my bag meant that I had an overwhelming number of yellow candies. (The bag makes mention that the assortment may vary, it also makes mention of the chance of mouth irritation.)

The candies break down this way:

Tangy Tangerine - a mild sour ...  (6 candies)
Super Sour Lemon - super pucker power. (15 candies)
Tongue Twisting Lime - will it be enough to burn your tongue? (8 candies)
Sweet Blue Raspberry - the sour extinguisher. (4 candies)

The little candies look more like pieces of lumpy gum. They’re matte in color and don’t smell like anything.

The Tangerine is nice. A little firm to chew, not quite a Chewy SweeTart or Skittles, it’s more like a Razzle that never turns into gum. Lemon is quite tart, but actually has some really good authentic lemon flavors in there, even a little bitterness that makes it taste like a freshly shaken lemonade. Lime is very sour, so much so that it takes a while to get to the actual flavor. Again, it actually tastes like lime eventually.

None of them was so sour that I had to reach for the Extinguisher but I pretended with some Lime anyway. The Raspberry was definitely sweet and it definitely smote the sour. The flavor was pretty bland, kind of like cotton candy.

The texture of the candies as a whole isn’t really my idea of great. They’re crumbly but never really chewy and then they disappear. I’d give them higher marks if I didn’t feel like the texture was due to being in the sofa cushions for several years. As an interactive candy that you really need to look at what you’re eating, it’s a fun idea, especially for kids who crave these sorts of things. I found, if nothing else, they really got my mouth watering.

UPDATE 6/9/2009: Big BOING, the company that developed Sour Extinguisher, sold it to American Licorice. It was relaunched in January 2009 with two flavor sets. Full review here of the new Chewy Extinguisher Sour Citrus & Chewy Extinguisher Sour Fruit.

  1. maybe i’m not a true candy addict, but that’s why i read your blog anyway, but i have to say the green ones were pretty sour, and i always like combining flavors together so the extinguisher and the green went pretty well together. i saw them in luncheables and they’re just fun to get every time i’m in 7-11

  3. I remember trying these ONCE while I was with my dad, and this was a few years ago. I never found them again, but I look everywhere I go! I love these things! The flavors are great and there’s a lot in the package. Just recently I was in the mall at the DEB shop, (actually, I was flirting with a worker there who was a guy, so I went in and tried to buy something so I could talk to him) and they had a candy called “Chewy Extinguisher - sour fruit candy” so I thought they were these. I opened the pack and yeah, I was disappointed since they were chewy and the shell was very grainy. The flavors were: watermelon (tangy), strawberry (sour), apple (super sour), and mixed berry (extinguisher). The Strawberry was more sour than the apple, and the mixed berry tasted like medicine. :/

I really wish I could find these, e-mail me if you know where to buy them?

Maddie - I think this blog is brilliant. (And isn’t it nice that I gave you place to state your opinion? That is what the comments are is for. It’s sad that instead of saying why you think that the candy is good you decided to talk about how I’m not qualified.)

Yes, it’s my opinion ... but I’m pretty sure that’s what a review blog is. An opinion. And I didn’t give it a bad review ... on top of that, Sour Extinguisher as reviewed here is no longer available. I’ll a review of the two new versions since the product line was relaunched by the American Licorice company.

skylar - if you didn’t click through to the new review (this product as reviewed is no longer available) you should check out their website.

The candy is now made by the American Licorice Company who also makes Red Vines. They have a product locator on their website.

  12. HELP ME!!!!!! A couple of years ago these candies were in lunchables and they were so good! I have been trying to look for these candies for awhile now! I’ve tried my grocery store, Block Buster, Hollywood Video and my local 7-11! I went on there website to locate an area where they had this candy and the closest place is 200 miles away! Where can I buy the candy online or at a store?
