Wonka Kazoozles: Cherry Punch & Pink Lemonade

Cherry Punch KazoozlesWay back in 2006 I first tried Wonka SweeTarts Rope. It was a cherry licorice rope filled with a tangy, grainy paste dotted with Nerds. It was definitely unique.

And then they seemed to disappear from shelves.

Then earlier this year I found Twizzlers Sweet & Sour Filled Twists, which seemed like a pretty good replacement, except perhaps a better deal since there were four ropes in each pack (and I preferred them because they had a pure lemon version).

Well it wasn’t really that SweeTarts Rope were discontinued, they were just retooled and are being relaunched as a new line called Kazoozles. They’ve dropped the Nerds and come in two different varieties now.

Cherry PunchCherry Punch Kazoozles are heralded as Delickoricious on the package. (Which makes me glad I only have to write this, instead of my reviews being delivered as a podcast - I’m not sure I can pronounce that.)

The ropes look a heck of a lot like their prequel, perhaps slightly less red.

They smell like a vat of black cherry flavoring.

The bite of the licorice tube is quite soft, less “wheat” flavored and more like a chew. The filling in the center is just slightly grainy, like a frosting made out of Pixy Stix. The punch flavor comes out loud and clear. It’s all rather artificial tasting and leaves an odd taste in my mouth later on.

Cherry Lemonade KazoozlesI was looking forward to the Pink Lemonade Kazoozles a bit more.

The packages are color coded, so it’s pretty easy to tell them apart. The wrappers are thin, metallic mylar.

Each rope is nicely sized and weigh a little less than an ounce each (.9 ounces to be exact).

Kazoozle Cherry LemonadeWhile it’d be easy to assume that this variety was just a different flavor; it’s not.

Here the lemon rope tube is textured with the ribbing that we usually see in licorice twists. But it’s also covered in a grainy sour powder. It’s sparkly! On top of that, it’s bigger around (but slightly shorter) than the Cherry Punch variety.

While the Cherry version smelled quite strongly, I barely got anything from this, just slight sweet fruity whiff.

The chew of the Lemon licorice rope is soft, softer than the Cherry, the sour grains give it a bit flavor punch right off the bat, instead of waiting to release after a few chews. The flavor is sour and stays that way for most of the experience. The lemony citrus really isn’t much of a contributor but later on when I got into the filling I caught some cherry notes.

Since I just had some of the Twizzlers version recently, I can say that I preferred the, but that’s mostly because I love lemon and the lemon was much more pronounced. As far as a reinvigoration of the SweeTarts Rope line, it’s nice to see a new flavor variation, even if it does have cherry in it just like the other flavor.

Like most licorice products, they’re made with wheat so are not gluten-free. They also contain a confectioners glaze and are not suitable for vegetarians.

  1. So glad there’s a new alternative to the Wonka Sweet Tart Rope. I mean, I like texture but that one just hurt my teeth! This looks as smooth as molten sugar but infinitely more delicious.

  3. I really loved the SweeTarts Rope and was disappointed to see it disappear!  I used to grab it on late-night runs to the store and I’ve kept looking for it all these years.  I’ll miss it but at least there’s something similar out there.

  10. Dear kazoozles factory,
Iwas thinking if you could make a new kazoozle.
the flaver would be blue rasberry onthe out side
and cherry filling on the inside.it still would
be sugar and every thing else you use just a differnt flavor. If you like this idea please try
it and tell me if you will sell it in stores.
    please think about this.

    number1! Kazoozles Fan!

  12. Funny story. I first tried this candy about 3 weeks ago and i loved it. i buy it almost everyday. and for the first 3 weeks there was apparently a promotion going on that if u buy 2 u get it for 2 dollars. other wise it was like 2.89 anyways i went yesteray to get them and they told me there was no deal anymore and i was like wtf.. and they were like me acctually made a mistake and there was never a deal. it was hallarious

  13. ok, so i saw these at 7-11 and was so delighted, I almost fainted, I am a candy-holic and this is the American release of a foreign favorite Wonka candy of mine which is the Wonka Fabulicious Sherbert Fizz..raspberry licorice rope filled with a delightful lemony sherberty tangy inside. This version is bigger than the kazoozles version, but instead of having to import my candy, this is a perfect alternative and provides the same concept and the pick lemonade version is a new surprise! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  14. Kazoozles are the best, I wish they would make more flavors. if you’ve played kingdom hearts 2 or kingdom hearts 358/2 day(best game ever!!!!)Their like sea-salt ice cream except its not salty but sour and sweet. It’s such a great candy like others that love candy i buy there all the time. The only thing wrong is sometimes i find little white things in them but all else is perfect. This comment would be longer but my little bro is bugging me so later.

    peace,love and kazoozles

  17. OMG… Kazoozles are absolutely amazing.. I’m surprised my friends and myself haven’t eaten all of them from speedway… They are absolutely delicious. I bet kazoozle sales were low until my buddy Dalton showed everyone here how wonderful they are. I personally prefer the pink lemonade ones.. but both of them are tasty. KEEP THEM COMING!!! I’m happy I’m in a sport cuz if I wasn’t I would be getting uber fat! I <3 KaZoOzLeS

  19. Cherry punch for the win. These have such an intense cherry punch flavor—just what I love. Sure, they make my teeth hurt just thinking about all the sugar, but they are so worth it. I like the soft texture. My new favorite candy.

  20. I am not usually a fan of any gummy/chewy candy. I tried the cherry-punch Kazoozles and I am definitely hooked! They are my guilty pleasure!! I finally found them being sold at convenient stores like Circle K. I am definitely excited!

all i really need to say is YUM.
mmm mmm goood. from the moment i put the long,
sweet sweet chew of a candy in my mouth i knew,
    IT WAS LOVE <3
from the sweet punch rope like outide to the sour gooey middle. its amazing in a fun sized bag. I dont even know where to start or how to possible explain the delightful feeling i get when i slowly insert it into my mouth. every chew is a pleasure. This is the greatest invention known to man. I wish there was some way my name could be in the tiny writings on the outside of this bag. This candy makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside its like no other feeling ive ever had. I NEED THESE ON THE DAILY. breakfast, lunch and dinner & maybe a midnight snack, or evening snack. These are amazing, no doubt about it. period END OF STORY.

Honestly the best candy ever!  Last year they started selling them at the concession stand at our local baseball complex.  Me and one kid from my team tried them together and we tell people that they are life changing!  and they are!  Now like all of our friends that go there to watch our games love kazoozles!

  24. I agree with jessie! that girl knows what she is talking about! I’m gonna have to agree with jessie that “I dont even know where to start or how to possible explain the delightful feeling i get when i slowly insert it into my mouth!” Soooo true, could not have said it better. And Russ, don’t be jealous of her, you just wish she would say that about you and you know it! I wish i had a tree that grew kazoozles, if anybody knows where I can get a kazoozle tree let me know, thanks!
