Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bar

I know nothing about this bar except what is in front of me: Limited Edition Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bar.

image

I got it directly from the Mars company, but no press materials. So all I have to go by is what’s on the wrapper and of course what’s inside that chocolate enrobing.

The package says: Almonds, Caramel and Marshmallow-Flavored Nougat wrapped in Dark Chocolate.

I was kind of dubious. I wasn’t fond of the Hershey’s S’Mores bar ... but that’s S’Mores, this is Rocky Road, which has the addition of nuts and the subtraction of graham crackers.

Like all the limited edition Snickers bars, this is smaller than the regular, clocking in at 1.83 ounces instead of 2.07 for the original. I’m okay with the slight of .24 ounces, it’s a satisfying bar, it says so right on the back.

Snickers Rockin' Nut Road BarIt smells lightly of vanilla and dark toasted nuts with a touch of chocolate. The chocolate shell is decent, and sets off the sweet innards well. The caramel has a good mix of almond pieces in it, they’re all fresh and crunchy and much more noticeable than those in the Snickers Almond. The nougat though is where this bar really differs from all others I’ve tried. It’s not the grainy fluffed nougat that ends up in Milky Way and 3 Musketeers. Instead this is like a dense marshmallow. Smooth and not too sweet, a little stringy like the caramel.

It’s a completely different texture experience with this smoother “marshmallow flavored nougat”, kind of like real European-style nougats. (The ingredients list says egg whites, there is no gelatin in here like marshmallows have, so this is still vegetarian-safe ... and probably a nice option for vegetarians who miss marshmallows.)

Perhaps it’s because I have a bounty of these bars and have eaten at least five for this review (instead of the usual 1 or 2 for most reviews), it’s grown on me quite a bit. Dark chocolate was a good choice, it keeps it all from feeling heavy and sticky. Brian also liked them, but also stopped short of love (and I agree, regular Snickers is still the best.)

Still, I can’t tell you where you can find them or when they’ll be available. (Except, of course, from me if you read on.)

Here’s a special peek into the life of a candy blogger.

On February 27th I got an email from someone at Mars, thanking me for my positive review on the Twix Java and offering, “I will be happy to send you samples of new products as they become available.” (Emphasis mine.) She also mentioned that Mars has launched a new direct buy store, where you can pick up boxes of their candies, including the hard to find Munch and Snickers Dark. Instead of being more expensive than regular stores (like the M&Ms online store - $5.99 for 7 ounces of green M&Ms?) it’s about $.68 cents a bar.

Well, I’ve been looking for an “in” with Mars for quite a while, as I’d love to know about the new releases and get them in advance of release (it’s pretty frustrating to have people ask about something they found in the store, and I can’t find it in any stores near me and no where to order it on the web). I do get some notice from PR folks, but it’s not always consistent.

I replied with my address and reminded her that there is no need for thanks for any reviews, “I just call them like I taste them.” (And it’s not like I’ve raved about everything Mars has ever made, but in general I like their products and usually turn down offers for items I don’t think I’d like.)

Stuff from MarsThen on March 5th I came home from work and found this in my kitchen. Perhaps I don’t understand the term “samples” but even in the world of generous interpretations a single box of 24 bars would be an ample sample. A full case of the bars? (Yes, that’s 12 boxes of Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bars with 24 bars each = 288 bars.)

Plus a case of Twix Java! (360 bars.) And another more responsible box of 24 packages of Starbust GummiBurst (goo filled gummis) and another box of 24 Snickers Charged.

I wrote back to Mars, thanking them for their generosity, but gently nudging that I really don’t know what to do with all that candy (seriously, almost 700 portions!). She responded, “Share with your friends wink

So here I am, with oodles of candy. I’ve given away quite a bit, boxes to the office, a couple for raffle prizes for the American Cetacean Society, three to a neighbor to take to work.

It’s drawing time.

I’m offering a box of candy bars (your choice: Twix Java with 36 bars or this new Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bar with 24 bars - you can tell me which you want if you win). There will be two lucky winners of this drawing. The rules are as follows:

  • Leave a comment here and tell me your ideal candy bar. It can be one that already exists, a better quality version of an existing bar, something that was discontinued or perhaps something that no one’s ever made before. (Mine would be a pretzel base, with good chewy caramel, pecans and covered in dark chocolate. A decadent Take 5.)
  • Leave a real working email address. I will not share this with anyone, but I will need to contact you if you’re the winner. If I don’t hear back from you in 72 hours after notifying you that you’ve won, I’ll draw a new winner. (I’ve got to get these out of the house before it gets too warm.)
  • Don’t click the “get updates to comments” or else you’ll get hundreds of updates. (If you do it accidentally, there’s an unsubscribe at the end of each email.)
  • All entries must be received by April 5th at 10 AM Pacific.
  • I can only ship to addresses in North America. (I’ll run a contest that’s a little more international soon.)
  • Winners will be drawn randomly from all eligible entries.
  • And there you have it, dear readers. With great candy comes great responsibility.

UPDATE 3/30/2008: Since this post has now been linked a couple of places (I kind of thought it was a treat for regular readers), I’m going to award three prize boxes instead of two if the entries reach 500. Just to keep the odds similar. (So if the deadline is coming and we haven’t hit it yet, tell your friends!) Thanks to everyone new who’s stopped by, I hope you keep reading!

UPDATE 4/9/2008: Thanks to everyone who entered. I drew three winners: Elise, Stijn & Donna ... two picked the Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bars and one chose the Twix Java. They’re all in the mail on their way to their recipients! To everyone else who is interested in trying the bars, they’ll be available starting in July 2008 according to Mars. Comments are open again.

    1. My ideal candy bar?  hmmmmm…..
I think a Heath Bar covered in dark chocolate with a sprinking of coconut in the chocolate!  YUM

    2. Oooh, I think if I could make up my own candy bar it would be some sort of hefty PB graham base, with buttery delicious caramel on top and a crispy milk chocolate coating—Kind of like 100 grand and pb twix’s lovechild.

And of course because it’s my ideal…the whole thing would be calorie and fat free! Muhahaha smile

    4. I think nice variations of the Pearson’s Salted Nut Roll would be to add a few flavors to the nougat, like strawberry or cherry.  These nut rolls could include dried bits of strawberries or cherries.  Pearson’s could market these as a bar alternative to trail mix.

    5. My ideal candy bar would be coconut enrobed in dark chocolate - something like a Mounds but a solid bar (not 2 pieces) and with nuts.  There just aren’t enough coconut based candy bars around!!

    6. ooh, i think my ideal would be just the most delicious creamy perfect not-too-dark-and-bitter chocolate.  not sour and grainy or thick and sticky.  just smooth, creamy and perfect!  ...or, i’ll always love cadbury fruit & nut.

    8. I would like either but the Twix Java a little more.  My favorite candy bar would be pretzels, caramel, hazelnuts and covered in milk and dark chocolate

    11. Hmmm. I love crispy candy bars: Paydays and Twix and Kit Kat and, though I have not had one in years, the 100K bar that had those nice rice crispie things….

But my ideal candy would be a dark chocolate version of Twix with a coffee flavored twist. I love chocolate with crispy ground up espresso beans.

    12. I don’t know how well these would go together - I guess I need a candy lab for that - but I have always loved the fluffy stuff in 3 Musketeers and the peanut butter in Reese’s peanut butter cups.  If those could be put together in a good milk chocolatey robe, I believe I would be very happy.  I love dark chocolate but believe milk chocolate would be better with those two tastes.  Yes, I have given a lot of thought to this.

    13. My ideal candy bar would have to be a three musketeers bar with a cookie base underneath the nougat, sort of like the one in twix, with a layer of junior mints filling between the top of the nougat and the chocolate.

    16. Hi
My ideal candy bar would be:
      “Goo Gusher”
It would be filled with 3 layers:
      1. delicous candy corn flavored gummi layer
      2. cotton candy fluff layer
      3. crunchy toffee layer
and it would be covered in a rich dark chocolate.
and dentists everywhere would worship me and build shrines in my name.

    17. The perfect candy bar for me would have these four elements: Banana’s, peanut butter, dark chocolate, and marshmallows. Yummy!

Comment by Mike on 3/31/08 at 12:11 pm #
    18. The Reeses Peanut Butter Cup is the ideal bar for many right now (including me), but my ideal bar outdoes the Reeses by far. It is (was) the High Noon bar. I used to get it way back in the 1960’s for a nickel. The peanut butter filling oozed peanut oil like the natural peanut butter and was way more peanutbuttery than Reeses. The chocolate was fine milk chocolate and it was a big slab of a bar. Long since discontinued, but I still dream about it now and then.

    19. My favorite candy bar is almost perfect. I LOVE the watchamacalit. It’s got a little bit of everything except for a cookie. So I would probably add a thin layer of chocolate cookie underneath the rice crispy/peanut butter layer.

    22. My ideal candy bar would simply be a candy bar version of the original Ferrero Rocher.  Oh, did I mention it would also be the size of my arm!??!  Oh…My…Gawd…

I am seriously drooling in my keyboard.  I really want to try the Java Twix but am now intrigued by the Rockin Nut Road bar.

    24. I am not sure I have a favorite candy bar!!
In no particular order here are some contenders.
      Twix
      Take 5
      Butterfingers
      Heath
      Snickers
That would have to be my top 5.  But to pick just one would be hard.

I would want the bar to be about the size and thickness of a Snickers, but come in two pieces - to share or save some for later.

    49. Since I am a chocoholic I would create a new candy bar with all of my favorite candy bars combined and call it the Snickers Surprise! I would have a bottom layer with whipped chocolate from 3 Musketeers, a middle layer of Peanut Butter from reeses Peanutbutter Cups, and a top layer of nougat mixed with cashews all sourrounded with your choice of a candybar of Dark Chocolate or Milk chocolate outer coating or both. A surprise in every bite! Now that’s a chocoholics dream come true!

    50. Hi Cybele,

Love your blog, and have been following it for awhile. I yearn for the return of the long-discontinued Nestle Triple Decker Bar. These haven’t been made for years, but they consisted of a bottom layer of milk chocolate, a thin layer of white chocolate in the middle, and then topped off by a layer of dark chocolate. They were heaven, and I can’t believe they haven’t brought these back.

My ideal candy bar would consist of two honeyed graham crackers with a creamy layer of peanut butter between them.  The graham cracker-peanut butter sandwich would be coated with a silky layer of milk chocolate.

    74. I have always been a Three Musketeers fan, but I think the concept of the Take Five is best.  My ideal candy bar really needs the exploit the pretzel/chocolate combo.  Since I’m also a nougat fan, perhaps a snicker-y nougat, with pretzels and chocolate on a top “layer.”  That’d probably be my #1.

But I’m dying the try the Snickers Rockin Nut Road.

    99. I am a LOVER of NUTS! But in Candy bars..I love ALMONDS. I would LOVE a candy bar that was LOADED with nuts or almonds. It must have a combination of Milk, Dark and White Chocolate. I would like to see an outer layer of Milk, with a inner layer of Dark, and white chocolate swirled throughout a light nougat center, loaded WITH NUTS. Maybe a hint of peanut butter with that. I only eat candy bars that have nuts, and snickers ALMOND is one of my favorites!!!

Well, my fave candy bars are Twix and Kit Kat bars. But I would have to say if I could make a candy bar, it would go a little something like this:  a wafer similar to Twix but made with pretzel, caramel, cashews, covered in a dark chocolate.  smile

    111. My ideal candy bar would be something like Death by Chocolate.  A candy bar so rich and sweet that just one little bite would be enough to feed the old sweet tooth.  Anything chocolate is a good candy bar.  Can’t wait to try the new Snickers Rockin? Nut Road Bar; sounds delicious.

    113. My favorite candy bar is the 100 Grand.  I am a huge caramel and chocolate fan.  I read on your website at some point about one with coconut.  Although I agreed in theory with the coconut needing to be in the chocolate.  This sounds ideal for me, but I was never able to find them.  I would also enjoy if the 100 grand was a bit softer.  Perhaps I always buy stale ones?

    136. I’ve long thought that the top-half-only of a proper, standard Snickers bar is the best candy bar ever.  I carefully slice off the nougat part from stock snickers bars (I do eat it but I don’t *like* it the way I like the nuts and caramel part) so that I can have the caramel-and-peanuts part only.

So I would love to see a bar with DARK chocolate, intense orange jelly, and a creamy nougat with almond chips to offset it the jelly. sounds yummy….maybe i will try to make it.. and if you don’t mind more than one…. a creamy, buttery caramel, covering pecans, over a layer of really good mocha truffel, all enrobed in semisweet chocolate… i could probably list more…but you just ask for one so i am already over doing it.

    151. I don’t understand…how are egg whites vegetarian? If you go the vegan route and don’t eat any animal products - hence the reason for avoiding gelatin - then how are egg whites a vegetarian-friendly substitute? I’m not vegetarian myself, so I am probably just misunderstanding this, but I was curious about that after reading your post.

Anyway, on to the more important question - the ideal candy bar. For me, it would combine dark chocolate (not extremely bitter like 71% cacao - maybe more like 55% or 60%, but definitely not a milk chocolate), lime, and pretzels. It would probably most resemble a flat layer of pretzel, coated in the dark chocolate, with a zig-zag drizzle of lime icing on the top. And when I say icing, I mean like the thin icing you sometimes see drizzled over chocolates in a Russell Stover’s or Whitman’s box. Not exactly sure what it’s called, but it’s not soft, and it looks like you could write with it. I like the idea of just putting the lime flavor in that drizzle of icing, so it’s not overwhelming, but it might be good to have a hint of it in the chocolate itself as well. Also, the pretzel layer shouldn’t snap and crumble into a hundred pieces when you bit into it, but it should still have some of the pretzel snappiness and not be just completely pliable. If you know of a candy bar like this already, please let me know!

    182. My ideal candy bar would be something delicious and exotic, like creamy milk chocolate mixed with passion fruit and vanilla, or chocolates filled with coconut milk and pineapple.

    186. ONE ideal bar?  Your chocolate and pretzels idea is good and I do buy both the Pretzel Flipz and pb filled chocolate pretzels (the walmart brand is the one I like best) on occasion.

Ones I miss that were GREAT?  It’s funny, but I used to love the Marathon bar - it was a long, skinny, chocolate-covered caramel lattice.  The holes allowed bites to consist of smaller bits rather than a whole mouthful, so no big issues with caramel getting caught in my teeth.  The idea was a flat and lacy Rolo, but I liked it even better.  This is funny because I don’t much like caramel in my candy bars now.

Another on I enjoyed was Choco-Lite.  Chocolate with bubbles in it.  Down the road there was a candy bar - it hit the 99c stores rignt away! - that was a chocolate laced with pop rocks style carbonation (though it was ALL chocolate, nothing fruity about it.)  People just.didn’t.get.it. but I think bubbly chocolate is awesome.  I think Cadbury’s Aero has bubbles?  I’ll have to either order some or make a trip to the candy store to experiment.

Finally - a classic that is actually really hard to find around here and something that has been a favorite for as long as I’ve had teeth:
BIT ‘O HONEY.  Last time I found one, it was in a hospital gift shop for a buck and a half.  I didn’t care - I got two.

    187. i’m in love with Fast Breaks! the best way to make them better is to add caramel and make it the size of a person!

    191. my ideal candy bar would be soft caramel, with roasted pistacios (which are used far too little in my opinion!) covered in dark chocolate.  finished with a touch of sea salt on top.
      holy moley… yum

    194. Wow, what a great giveaway!

I’m a huge fan of the salty/sweet combo, with some crunch.  I’d love a salted caramel candy bar, with a twix-like cookie or some chopped marcona almonds for some crunch.  But I’m definitely excited about the prospect of rocky road snickers!

    195. My ideal candy bar is the no longer in production Marathon bar. It was a braided caramel bar coated in milk chocolate and it was absolutely sensational! Anything with chocolate and chewy caramel is what I love.

    196. Snickers is without a doubt my favorite.  Frozen, chopped into ice cream, straight out of the wrapper or any extra special way I get eat it.

    199. Love your blog—just stumbled across it today.  As a true candy addict, I’m partial to anything a little salty & a little sweet.  Perhaps a slightly salty cookie base similar to a twix, topped with a layer of a coffee caramel, topped with toasted, chopped hazelnuts then covered in a lovely semi-sweet (not bittersweet mind you:)) chocolate.  De-licious!
