Snickers Charged

imageMars has messed around quite a bit with Snickers over the past few years with various limited editions. Snickers Almond (more nuts with added almond pieces), Snickers Xtreme (all caramel & nuts), Snickers Nut ‘n Butter Crunch (all peanuts & nougat), Snickers Dark (dark chocolate) and Snickers Shrek (green nougat).  What they haven’t done yet is put something in Snickers that wasn’t already there.

That comes to an end as Snickers thinks that we need to wake up.

They’ve introduced their new Limited Edition Snickers Charged which boasts 60 milligrams of caffeine, taurine and other B vitamins (about 10% of your RDA).

The bar is slightly smaller than their regular one, again this is the same with all the limited edition bars. It’s 1.83 ounces instead of 2.06.

imagealt=“Snickers Charged” />

Of course a slightly smaller bar means fewer calories. This one is 250 calories compared to the 280 in the regular bar.

It smells much like the regular Snickers, has the same texture ... same crunchy peanuts, chewy caramel and super-sweet nougat with a hit of salt. And then it comes along, the caffeine kick. And when I say kick, I mean in the mouth. It’s a bitter aftertaste that sits high and in the back of the mouth. It just kind of lingers there, like maybe it’s not something you ate but something you smelled (sometimes strong skunk will do that to me). And it stays with you, probably as long as the caffeine is in your system. I clocked my aftertaste for eating one half of a bar at 90 minutes.

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t notice the bitterness of coffee, it might not be such a big deal. The nice thing about a regular Snickers is that it’s an anytime bar ... this one I wouldn’t be able to eat late in the day or the evening because I simply can’t sleep if I have caffeine that late. If they’d made this a coffee flavored bar like the Twix Java, well now then we’d have something!

That 60 milligrams is nothing to sneeze at:

1 - 8-ounce soft drink contains 20-40 milligrams (about 150-170 calories)
1 - 8-ounce regular coffee contains 65-120 milligrams (5-100)
1 - 8-ounce energy drink contains 72-80 milligrams (110-140 calories)

Honestly, it’s a great value as an edible dose of caffeine goes. A candy bar is usually about 75 cents at a convenience store. A cup of coffee is usually $1.25 and a soda is $1.00 ... you might be able to get an energy drink for about $2.00. (Let’s not even go into the caffeine, calories & price of those blended coffee drinks.)

I got four bars as samples from Mars and I’ll probably eat them all, but unless I have a specific need for unhydrated caffeine, I don’t see myself picking up one of these. (Add that to the fact that they’re limited edition, which will likely make them harder to find.)

  1. I don’t understand why everything has to be caffeinated these days, anyway. Its more a problem for me than most people because I can’t have caffeine, but it seems silly that stuff that isn’t naturally caffeinated should often be available only with caffeine added, and if it leaves a bad taste afterwards, like this snickers, well that doesn’t seem like great marketing for people who can have caffeine either!

  4. “What they haven?t done yet is put something in Snickers that wasn?t already there.”

What about that Snickers with crispy things in it?  Was it called “Snickers Cruncher” or something?  Or maybe it was too unappealing and unnecessary to even be counted among the Snickers variations. smile

Thank you for being brave enough to try all of these crazy limited edition products!

  6. They love to put caffeine in everything, don’t they? (Whoever ‘they’ are)...I found some caffeinated lip gloss once. It did not perk me or my lips up though!

I have been reading your blog for ages and enjoy it so much - hope you don’t mind that I put you in my links list…

  9. i saw this company at a chocolate festival in miami today, and thought you’d get a kick out of their stuff.  they had sample drops of just regular straight chocolate and it was ridiculously good.

  10. Hmm, this sounds like it could have been a fun treat for a late-night study sesh, but I cannot abide by candy bars with after taste! I don’t eat candy much (okay, I don’t BUY candy, if it’s a gift or something, I’ll indulge), and I almost never get bars, but I LOVE your reviews—you’ve inspired me to try things and saved me money when it came to failures. I’m a college student, so saving a few bucks is no small accomplishment. Thanks!

  11. I tried the Snickers Charged today and I STILL have indigestion.  That is the nastiest tasting thing I have EVER eaten.  I am going to ask them to refund my money.  I truly am going to ask the company to refund my money.  SO SO BAD!!! AWFUL aftertaste.

  12. I’m currently on a Mars boycott, but I can’t resist reading your reviews of that company.  You have such good descriptions.  Luckily, this isn’t one I would have been too interested in trying anyway; I avoid caffiene (not that that’s managed to do anything about my insomnia.)  It seems like I’m the only one, since sometimes it feels as if EVERYTHING is caffienated.

  13. I saw this at the gas station on Saturday, and the thought of it gave me a full-body shiver… It reminded me of how in high-school we made “hyper brownies” by pulverizing No-Doz and mixing it into brownie batter. The resulting product had that weird, bitter taste that you mentioned… kind of like if you can’t swallow an asprin on the first try.

  15. I actually love these, though yeah, there is an odd aftertaste that was questionable at the time, but then I remembered that my vitamin B supplements had the same bitterness when I didnt swallow it after putting it in my mouth.  after about 3 bars, I got used to the aftertaste, also if you keep chucking it down your mouth without really pausing, you wont notice it until then end, but as soon as you paush for a minute to take a breather, you’ll feel it start itching(taste wise) on the back of your tongue.  aside from these I’ve also started liking the new chocolate skittles too which too leaves an odd almost splenda like aftertase on your tongue, but if you like diet soda that uses Splenda as the sweetner, you won’t notice it.

  16. also since I work at Sam’s Club, basically a Costco type warehouse store owned by wal-mart, anyway we sell 24pk boxes of these for $9.44 and well, I ended up buying about 6 of them, planning on buying them again, funny thing is I bought one box the first time just to try them out, I thought it was a bad idea but man it sure wasnt and neither did all my fellow associates which liked them too(graveyard shift), so yeah we’re always sold out because we always buy them….lol.

Comment by Anthony Vang on 1/28/08 at 7:48 am #
  17. I think people are looking at these the wrong way. Yes it is *another* thing with added caffeine. But at least it’s actually a food and not a drink or pill or mint. People who mainline caffeine tend to do so at the expense of their breakfast or lunch. This way you can have both your caffeine hit and something with a little fat and protein in it.

  25. Hmm I tried one of these today. I don’t usually eat candy or chocolate, but since I saw it and the marketing was really good “CAFFEINE” I got one.
Now I gotta say, I LOVE that everything has caffeine now a days. Its so awesome. Unfortunately, I’m an extremely caffeine tolerant person. While most people can drink a soda and then stay up for hours upon hours…I can drink 2 energy drinks then go to sleep 20 minutes later.

But regardless, I love caffeine. So I saw this and a Rhino (Perfect image to put on the packaging btw. Rhino’s charge. That was so perfect) and I grabbed one. I tried it and..it tastes exactly like a Snicker’s bar. Maybe a snickers bar that was more bland (but I like that since I hate really really sweet things).

However, I didn’t taste the aftertaste that you mentioned. If someone had given me this and told me it was a snickers bar, I wouldn’t have known that it was different kind. I just didn’t feel an after taste. It was pretty good imo.

I don’t really feel a CHARGE from the bar. But like I said, caffeine doesn’t affect me. Hell, I even drank a mountain dew with it. This was maybe 30 minutes ago. I think I’ll go to sleep in a bit.

But to wrap it up, I love this candy bar. Its not as sweet as regular Snickers, AND it has caffeine? Hell if it was sugar free I’d be like “SIGN ME UP FOR 2 CASES”

Comment by Limeade on 2/19/08 at 7:45 pm #
  26. Oh I forgot to add this. Its ironic that you mentioned the Twix Java in your review. Because I bought that at the same time as this Snickers as well. However I took one bite of it and hated it. I can’t stand caramel (I didn’t read that it had caramel) and I hate the coffee taste. I guess I only like Coffee in its liquid form.

  27. I tried one of these today with my husband, and I kept saying I had an aftertaste in my mouth.  Almost like a disolved a pill under my tongue.  It also made me jittery.  However, my husband loved it, and had no aftertaste.  He also likes the buzz.  So I guess it depends on the person, but I prefer the regular snickers bar!

  28. I work at a convenient store and we are selling these right now. I go in on the weekends at 6:00 a.m. so you know how tiring that can be. I saw those while I was working and usually I don’t try new stuff like that unless it really looks good and has something in it I know I will like. Anyways I decided okay I need a boost because like #25 I don’t get a caffine high from anything. I drink soda like it is water. Anyways I ate this and it was really good. I was surprised that it was so good. And I got a really big kick out of it. It wasn’t a bad feeling but it was an energy kick. Only bad thing was when it went away I wanted another one. So I ended up eating 2.

In my opinion I’d say it is great.

  29. I saw these at the store, and I said to myself, “Wow, I have GOT to get some of these for work!”.  I am an avid coffee drinker, and I was amused that I could get a dose of caffeine from candy.  I stocked up with 8 bars (they were 2/$1.00).  Thanks Mars!

  30. I don’t know what everyone is talking about. I actually love the new Snickers bar and I wish it wasn’t only a limited edition. I don’t taste any aftertaste like you mention and although the jolt of caffenie is not quite as much as I would like, it is nice to know I can get it in a chocolate bar when I do need a little something. I will defnitely keep buying this bar over the regulra bar. If you don’t like the new one, nothing is stopping you people from buying the old one. Last time I checked, it is still on the shelves.

  31. My wife called me from Sam’s Club and told me about these new bars and I was excited: chocolate AND vitamins!
But the AFTERTASTE and the ILL feeling after just eating less than 1/2 a bar; now I’m stuck with 23 more bars.
    Yuch!
I love chocolate and I LOVE the Snickers Dark; but these are Terrible!
Sorry, but I have never had such a bad tasting chocolate bar (and I eat a LOT of chocolate).
Get rid of the aftertaste and after effects and I will be happy to try it again.
In the meantime I will have to find someone who wants these 23 bars!

  32. THANK YOU, AL!  I knew I was not the only person reading these blogs who had the same bad experience and detestable aftertaste that I did with Snickers Charged.  I’ve eaten too much great chocolate (with regular Snickers being my favorite candy bar of choice) not to know when I have a bad experience.  I’m so happy for all the people who stated they love this bar to have them and to have them beyond the limited edition.  Two bites was more than enough for me.  Maybe they will buy your 23 bars.

  35. I just got done eating a charged snickers about half an hour ago and it does have a after taste. Plus my stomach is up set now. I can drink energy drinks without a stomach ache. So I think it is a dumb ideal.

P.S. still have that after taste in the back of my throat. I won’t eat one again!

  37. I like this candy bar.  Granted, I don’t eat much candy, but where I work we have lots of vending machines and the caffeinated drinks are actually needed.  We are open 24 hours a day and all we do is sit in front of computers for at least 8 hours staring at our screen and typing what we see.  It is veeeerrrrry tedious work.  Not hard at all, but repetive, tedious, and extremely tiring - even if you just had a very good sleep before work.  Everyone’s has a caffeine drink in their hands during breaks and I spotted this in the vending machine last week.  I was the only one to try it at that time, and it really worked to keep me alert.  Since it has other “revitalizing” ingredients besides caffeine, it lasted longer than a sugar rush kick too.  At almost 1000 people working where I do round the clock, we can’t keep these for more than a few hours in our vending machines now.

I guess I’m not a “candy bar connoisseur”, expecially when it comes to this candy bar.  I’ve never noticed an aftertaste, but now that I’ve read the comments, I’m going to have to pay attention.  It won’t matter even if I do though, I’m looking for alternatives to nasty caffeine drinks and this seems to do the trick.  For now, anyway.

Comment by Snerticus on 3/28/08 at 10:02 am #
  38. Dunno about the caffeine rush (I’m kind of immune to it already), but the bar tastes fine. I don’t taste any difference between this one and the regular snickers. Then again, I prefer a good ol’ 3 Musketeers bar any day. wink

  39. i had to work til 2 am for the past week, i found these things on day 3 and they taste great i was really happy that it was less sweet, i think the regular snickers has too much sugar and sweetness,  and let me stay focused a LONG LONG time.  only problem was i ate one at 11pm and could not sleep until 5am made the next day a little rough

  40. I ate one of these early in the afternoon on an empty stomach, and have to say that I did get the energy drink willys from it. Eh, not bad at all. I highly doubt if you’d get off if you ate one on a full stomach. Next time I’ll eat one with a Monster and see what happens….

  41. I was very impressed with the energy I received from the Snickers Charged candy bar.  It was just enough to give me energy and keep me going.  I tried my first one yesterday evening (a little too late to be eating it), but today I will try one about 1:30 p.m. to hopefully help me not to get the mid-afternoon tiredness.

  42. I really liked the Charged bar.  I’m a backpacker and this is an ideal food for that.  I thought it wasn’t as sweet as a regular Snickers (which I also LOVE) and I had none of the after taste or ill feelings after eating them.  I bought 28 of them and ate them on 2 backpacking trips. Handed a few out as well.  Now I’m trying to find another limited edition Snickers that another hiker told me about - for the Indiana Jones movie and said it tasted like it had coconut in it.  Snickers Almond (and I love almonds) is truly grotesque and I couldn’t choke that nasty thing down.

Comment by Linda on 5/02/08 at 8:00 am #
  43. I LOVE Snickers and I did notice the aftertaste in the bar, however, the caffeine way outweighs the taste thing.  I ate two more, one three or four hours after the first bar, and one the next day.  I no longer really notice the aftertaste. It’s not as sweet as the regular Snickers but Snickers get me full and I’d rather eat a couple of these than drink coffee.

I hate the way coffee tastes and I usually put lots of chocolate, mint, cream or anything in it to disguise the taste.  I don’t care for pop much. I am very sensitive to caffeine so a couple of these bars work great for me.

Just gotta find a place to stock up on these!

  44. Unfortunately they’re limited edition and their time in the stores seems to have expired.  I’m hoping to find some on the internet.  Ebay had them for about $16-$18 dollars a box of 24, but my local Sam’s club had them for - get this $6 a box!  I couldn’t believe my eyes!  However, this was after March 31, when the limited edition bars were no longer available and the space on the shelf was empty.  Oh well.  They have the Snickers Adventure Bar (with coconut).  Sounds good, but even if it is delicious it won’t have that caffeine kick I need sometimes at work.  :(

  49. I am, sad to say, becoming addicted to Snicker’s Rhino bars.  I do not normally eat regular Snickers bars, but I was intrigued by the packaging, and gave it a try last week.  Yes, I taste the bitterness and experience quite the buzz, but it’s perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up with my coffee.

  50. LOL - join the club!  I think the people that don’t like Charged are the ones that frequently eat Snickers.  Just a theory.  I myself like Snickers but don’t eat it often.  That is why when I eat the Charged bar it tastes delicious. To me it tastes exactly like a Snickers bar with only a hint of bitterness.  But to me it enhances the flavor in a unique way.  And it does it’s job perfectly for me at work.

Comment by Snerticus on 5/30/08 at 2:12 pm #
  51. I am glad to see others tasting the bitterness of these. There awful. I thought my taste buds were off. Also, why the Taurine? Why do we need added Taurine? So we give it to our Cats when we can’t eat any more? Taurine is needed for Cats Eyesight.
Hmmm. Something added to have the public think there missing out on yet another thing just for their sales.

  52. I am hooked on the Charged Candy Bar now. I have up to 3 a day. I take one in the morning, mid day and before I work out, I always drink a Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke with them. I buy them in bulk from Walmart. I work out of the house and need a kick in the pants to wake up. It has helped me lose weight since I do not eat any other sweets and I am not as hungry for lunch or dinner. My wife also likes them but like others has noticed the aftertaste. Energy bars have a bad taste, much less after taste and in Arizona you do not want hot coffe in 110 degree heat. The cold coffe drinks are loaded with calories.

  56. When I first bought a whole box of these at Sam’s Club I thought: “Great”, until I tasted them and the BITTER aftertaste just would not go away. Since then (and hearing so many positive comments from this blog), I thought, “OK” I’ll try them again (but this time I didn’t eat the nuts on top, just the bottom - turns out the nuts are burned and bitter) and now the taste is “OK” (REALLY like the Snicker’s DARK tho’; they are AWESOME).

  57. Bought a box of these off of Wal-mart’s clearance rack the other day, along with a box of those Java Twix. I think they’re both delicious, although I haven’t noticed the aftertaste that everyone else is talking about with the Snickers. I do drink espresso (home brewed) on a regular basis, though, so that could be why.

I don’t know what you guys are tasting, but this “Snickers Charged” is the best thing yet.  I love the taste of coffee and chocolate, and that “bitter aftertaste” is my pleasant reminder to hold me over until the next one!!!!  If you don’t drink coffee on a regular basis (a thermos full before 10:00am for me) then you probably won’t like it.  But there are plenty of us who do!!!

  61. I LOVE IT!  I not only have loved Snikers since the 70’s, I also love energy.  This is the perfect combo for me!  If you don’t like that “bitter aftertaste”, don’t put yourself through the torture, just box those “Charged…” bars up and ship ‘em my way.

  62. Often, as a school bus driver, I find myself “sagging” a bit in the afternoon.  So, just before my afternoon routes, I unwrap a Snickers Charged and put myself right back on track ... and I don’t have to worry about a potty-stop as I would with a cup of coffee.  Perfect for a man on the go ... who doesn’t want to have to stop to go!!!

  63. Kabang is nothing like Snickers.  Kabang has no chocolate or peanuts and only comes in fruit flavors.  When I’m in the mood for chocolate, I don’t want watermelon, I want chocolate.

If I want all-natural that bad, I’ll eat real fruit, it gives the most natural energy of all, and comes in a gazillion awesome flavors. And you can’t beat the taste of real fruit. smile

Snerticus - sorry about that spammy comment. I’ve removed it, but for those following along, someone named Alex was promoting another caffeinated product. (And I’m inclined to agree - I eat candy because of the way it tastes and fruit doesn’t satisfy me the way chocolate does and chocolate doesn’t satisfy me the way fruit does.)

  67. You can’t really, they haven’t made them since this time last year.  you might be able to find them on eBay. I did, and each time I bought three boxes.  However, the latest date expired in November.  I kept them in my fridge so they lasted longer.  If you find them online somewhere, I’m sure the expiration date is November 2008, so I don’t know if you want to buy them in that case.  I wrote the company last year to let them know I’d like them to keep the product.  I would recommend anyone who likes this product to write Snickers and let them know. Other than trying to bring it back, I doubt you’ll be able to find some, but you can still try.

    Good luck!

  68. I feel like everything gives you energy these days. Why candy? As if candy isn’t bad enough for kids, they just keep making it worse and worse. However, it seems they are trying to break into a different demographic with the caffiene boost. I wonder, does it taste any different then a regular Snickers? I’ll be interested to see what Mars comes up with for future Snickers bars…

  69. I’m eating this candy bar right now. It tastes like the regular Snickers bar, but not as good. I don’t like all the nuts in the regular bar, there are less in this bar, so I like it more. It tastes like there is dark chocolate in the bar instead of regular chocolate. It is a decent bar, I probably won’t buy it again, but if someone else bought it for me, I would eat it. I just don’t want to spend my money on it, simply because it isn’t all that fantastic.

  70. We found them at the 99 cent store here in Vegas, the wife liked the pick up in the afternoon at work. Since they don’t make them anymore the wife passed away and I ran out, the only place I found to get them now is on line.

  71. Hey Greg, I didn’t know you could find them on-line! Thanks! I just ordered 48 of them. I’m a backpacker and find these to be outstanding on the trail. The taurine is something that helps muscles. The extra shot of caffeine gets me the extra miles I might need to go down the trail. I LOVE regular Snickers but I find these easier to down quickly - not as sweet - and they seem to do me good while hiking.  The only Snickers bar I cannot eat is the Snickers Almond. I love almonds - by themselves or in Hershey bars - but I found the Snickers Almond to be absolutely vile tasting.  I couldn’t even finish one bar.

  73. I ordered 3 boxes I found on line but they had one to send so I don’t know any more. Bug the maker I guess.

  74. Most if not all expired back in November 2008.  Unless they made more this year, but I haven’t heard anything.  The last batch I got in December were good, but the ones in November definitely were starting to get stale.  Hopefully if you find some, the seller will have kept them in ideal condition so they stay as fresh as possible.

I already bugged the maker mid to late summer of last year… I suppose others might let them know they like them too and to make more. smile

  75. I just got one of these in my hands from a friend. She brought a box to our bonfire - the teenagers went crazy on them!  But I pulled mine out this afternoon looking for a caffine boost and loved it!  The taste is great - almost has a coffee taste in the carmel.  I was flyin’ thru my work, but then I developed an ache in my shoulder and right arm.. not sure but it just feels related and I’m kinda feeling yucky now. So, that’s my 2 cents.  I liked them enough that I may try it once more to be sure the ache is related before I ditch them.

  76. The people who don’t like the taste, don’t understand that these taste a lot better than the typical sports energy bar. I have always been partial to snickers bars when back packing and climbing and the addition of caffeine is a + when you are running low on energy in the back country.

  77. Wow… I don’t understand why they put caffeine, taurine and whatever in everything these days. Even more calories and sugar to boost your energy: great for athletes… bad for non-athletes…

  78. Snickers Charged is great.  It really gets me going when I need a boost.  Also, my son has a hard time getting started at school in the morning and I have found that when he eats half of a Snickers Charged that he almost always completes his morning work at school.  Please help bring this big help back.  The school had talked about needing to put him on medication even though he is an honor role student until I tried the Snickers Charged on him and I really would like to say thanks for the boost! So, thank you and if there is anyway to bring it back, please do, it is a great energy boost for the two of us.  My little brother was buying them by the case also and would love to be able to get the product once again.

  79. I just tasted the Snickers Charged this week and loved it. Where can they be found? I searched online and can’t see a source. The guy that shared it with me at worth isn’t telling where he got his.

Kathy - as far as I know, Snickers Charged was a limited edition item produced in 2008. Any inventory you’re eating now is probably two years old.
