Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bar

I know nothing about this bar except what is in front of me: Limited Edition Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bar.

image

I got it directly from the Mars company, but no press materials. So all I have to go by is what’s on the wrapper and of course what’s inside that chocolate enrobing.

The package says: Almonds, Caramel and Marshmallow-Flavored Nougat wrapped in Dark Chocolate.

I was kind of dubious. I wasn’t fond of the Hershey’s S’Mores bar ... but that’s S’Mores, this is Rocky Road, which has the addition of nuts and the subtraction of graham crackers.

Like all the limited edition Snickers bars, this is smaller than the regular, clocking in at 1.83 ounces instead of 2.07 for the original. I’m okay with the slight of .24 ounces, it’s a satisfying bar, it says so right on the back.

Snickers Rockin' Nut Road BarIt smells lightly of vanilla and dark toasted nuts with a touch of chocolate. The chocolate shell is decent, and sets off the sweet innards well. The caramel has a good mix of almond pieces in it, they’re all fresh and crunchy and much more noticeable than those in the Snickers Almond. The nougat though is where this bar really differs from all others I’ve tried. It’s not the grainy fluffed nougat that ends up in Milky Way and 3 Musketeers. Instead this is like a dense marshmallow. Smooth and not too sweet, a little stringy like the caramel.

It’s a completely different texture experience with this smoother “marshmallow flavored nougat”, kind of like real European-style nougats. (The ingredients list says egg whites, there is no gelatin in here like marshmallows have, so this is still vegetarian-safe ... and probably a nice option for vegetarians who miss marshmallows.)

Perhaps it’s because I have a bounty of these bars and have eaten at least five for this review (instead of the usual 1 or 2 for most reviews), it’s grown on me quite a bit. Dark chocolate was a good choice, it keeps it all from feeling heavy and sticky. Brian also liked them, but also stopped short of love (and I agree, regular Snickers is still the best.)

Still, I can’t tell you where you can find them or when they’ll be available. (Except, of course, from me if you read on.)

Here’s a special peek into the life of a candy blogger.

On February 27th I got an email from someone at Mars, thanking me for my positive review on the Twix Java and offering, “I will be happy to send you samples of new products as they become available.” (Emphasis mine.) She also mentioned that Mars has launched a new direct buy store, where you can pick up boxes of their candies, including the hard to find Munch and Snickers Dark. Instead of being more expensive than regular stores (like the M&Ms online store - $5.99 for 7 ounces of green M&Ms?) it’s about $.68 cents a bar.

Well, I’ve been looking for an “in” with Mars for quite a while, as I’d love to know about the new releases and get them in advance of release (it’s pretty frustrating to have people ask about something they found in the store, and I can’t find it in any stores near me and no where to order it on the web). I do get some notice from PR folks, but it’s not always consistent.

I replied with my address and reminded her that there is no need for thanks for any reviews, “I just call them like I taste them.” (And it’s not like I’ve raved about everything Mars has ever made, but in general I like their products and usually turn down offers for items I don’t think I’d like.)

Stuff from MarsThen on March 5th I came home from work and found this in my kitchen. Perhaps I don’t understand the term “samples” but even in the world of generous interpretations a single box of 24 bars would be an ample sample. A full case of the bars? (Yes, that’s 12 boxes of Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bars with 24 bars each = 288 bars.)

Plus a case of Twix Java! (360 bars.) And another more responsible box of 24 packages of Starbust GummiBurst (goo filled gummis) and another box of 24 Snickers Charged.

I wrote back to Mars, thanking them for their generosity, but gently nudging that I really don’t know what to do with all that candy (seriously, almost 700 portions!). She responded, “Share with your friends wink

So here I am, with oodles of candy. I’ve given away quite a bit, boxes to the office, a couple for raffle prizes for the American Cetacean Society, three to a neighbor to take to work.

It’s drawing time.

I’m offering a box of candy bars (your choice: Twix Java with 36 bars or this new Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bar with 24 bars - you can tell me which you want if you win). There will be two lucky winners of this drawing. The rules are as follows:

  • Leave a comment here and tell me your ideal candy bar. It can be one that already exists, a better quality version of an existing bar, something that was discontinued or perhaps something that no one’s ever made before. (Mine would be a pretzel base, with good chewy caramel, pecans and covered in dark chocolate. A decadent Take 5.)
  • Leave a real working email address. I will not share this with anyone, but I will need to contact you if you’re the winner. If I don’t hear back from you in 72 hours after notifying you that you’ve won, I’ll draw a new winner. (I’ve got to get these out of the house before it gets too warm.)
  • Don’t click the “get updates to comments” or else you’ll get hundreds of updates. (If you do it accidentally, there’s an unsubscribe at the end of each email.)
  • All entries must be received by April 5th at 10 AM Pacific.
  • I can only ship to addresses in North America. (I’ll run a contest that’s a little more international soon.)
  • Winners will be drawn randomly from all eligible entries.
  • And there you have it, dear readers. With great candy comes great responsibility.

UPDATE 3/30/2008: Since this post has now been linked a couple of places (I kind of thought it was a treat for regular readers), I’m going to award three prize boxes instead of two if the entries reach 500. Just to keep the odds similar. (So if the deadline is coming and we haven’t hit it yet, tell your friends!) Thanks to everyone new who’s stopped by, I hope you keep reading!

UPDATE 4/9/2008: Thanks to everyone who entered. I drew three winners: Elise, Stijn & Donna ... two picked the Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road Bars and one chose the Twix Java. They’re all in the mail on their way to their recipients! To everyone else who is interested in trying the bars, they’ll be available starting in July 2008 according to Mars. Comments are open again.

    9. I can’t say there is A candy bar out there that I must have.  My favorite candy bar would be twix.  I love the carmel and cookie crunch coated with chocolate.  The thing that I think would make it out of this world would to be cover it with dark chocolate instead of milk.  I don’t think they have done that yet - at least I haven’t seen anything like it in my area!

Comment by Shelby on 3/30/08 at 12:15 pm #
    10. My ideal candy bar would be a light chocolate creme/ganache infused with rum and raisins, spiked with crispy bits of maybe rice puffs or rosted almonds and covered with dark chocolate.
I use my pregnancy as excuse for the strange combination grin.

    11. I would like to see a candy bar dipped in rainbow sprinkles. Even something as simple as a 3 Musketeers dipped in rainbow sprinkles. I can’t think of anything better!

    12. Okay this is pretty complicated:
My ideal candy bar would be the soft chocolate center of the Ferrero Rocher candy with the nut in the middle.  The chocolate center would be covered in rice krispy treats with big chunks of marshmallow in it (instead of having it all mixed in like the actual stuff).  A layer of nougat would surround that.  And the last thing would be a layer of Godiva milk chocolate coating the entire thing.  mmm it would be a big ball of deliciousness. smile god, i want to make one now. hahaha.

    16. I think my ideal candy bar would consist of a soft component like gianduja, caramel with sea salt, or fluffy nougat with a hint of orange blossom water; and a crispy or crunchy component like a feuillantine or rice krispies layer, or something like cocoa nibs or chopped espresso beans. And it’s a dark chocolate bar for me!

Haha, I can’t really make up my mind and want a bit of everything. Anyway, thanks for sharing the candy bars. That is A LOT of candy! :O

    20. My ideal candy bar would an ice cream bar with elements reflecting the Snickers with Almonds (formerly the Mars Bar in the US) but with dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. I love the Snickers ice cream bar, but it is too peanut-y.

    24. It would start with Dark chocolate outer coating with delicious whipped/mousse caramel and coffee inside. Maybe bits of raisins to give it texture.

    25. My ideal candy bar?  Something with lots of crunchy nuts - preferrably almonds - caramel, toffee, nougat, and chocolate.  Maybe some peanut butter thrown in - you know, to make it kind of healthy.  Oh, and some soft, chocolate filling.

    34. My ideal candy bar is Germany’s Ritter Sport Chocolate with Butter Biscuit.  It’s a delicious silky milk chocolate, better than any I’ve had in the U.S. and it enrobes a crispy shortbread type cookie, that tastes full of butter.  The brand is called Sport, I’m guessing because their perfectly square shape makes them ideal post-sporting snacks?  Anyway, they are delicious.  If you haven’t tried this brand yet, it’s highly recommended.  They also have a bunch of interesting flavors such as cappuccino, etc.  Sort of hard to find, but we can find them out here okay in Nebraska.

But I have to say, when they made the Big Kat, it just didn’t taste the same.  Same goes with the Nestle Crunch, the Bunch o’Crunch they sell at movie theaters tastes awful.  The Crunch or Hershey’s Krackel is my 2nd favorite candy.  smile

    41. So many comments already.
My ideal candy bar would have crystallized ginger and cranberry pieces in dark chocolate in the top layer and that would be over a layer of pecans.  Sort of poured over the pecans so the chocolate melts down into them and holds it all together.
      Oh yes.

    44. It haunts me - I remember a candy bar from when I was a boy but I don’t remember the name.  It had dark chocolate, mint and milk chocolate with a peanut butter layer.  It was heavenly and I wish I could find it.

Darn, now I’m hungry.  What’s in the kitchen?

    46. My ideal candy bar would be segmented chocolate squares. Each square would have a different “addition”. One would have mint, another chopped peanuts, caramel, cookie crunch, coconut, marshmellow and so on. You get the idea. That way I could have a little of everything I like in ONE BAR! WooHoo!!

Comment by Carol on 3/30/08 at 3:22 pm #
    47. This could result in epic fail, but I’d love to see something with a crushed graham cracker or gingersnap base, with a layer of pumpkin pie filling type substance, and topped with fluffy marshmallow. Not sure if robing it in chocolate would put it over the top, but I’m not sure how else to prevent it dissolving into an abrasive sticky goo pile as soon as you unwrap it.

But Milka has a choclate bar (one of the big ones) with milk, dark, and white chocolate which is one of my favorites. So white chocolate enrobed with dark, and a salty caramel center, that would be a great bar for me, like a double dipped Rollo

    79. Let’s see. My ideal candy bar does not exist that I know of, but it would combine aspects of existing yummy candy bars.  Have you ever heard of Bit of Honey? Well, I think that it would be delicious if it was in a bar form and coated with dark chocolate..mmm…

    84. Many moons ago, I used to get a candy bar at school that was called “Big Time” It was chocolate, caramel and nuts, I believe. I would love to have one today to see if it’s anywhere near as good as I thought it was.
But I would love to try out the Snickers bar also.

    85. When I know For Sure that I am about to die, I will eat Snickers until I want no more.  I am diabetic and, fortunately, I can cheat a lot, but I must exercise to lower my blood sugar after I cheat, and I have excellent A1C tests/
A Snickers bar is always a treat, and many people are not as fortunate as I.
I repeat, however, that when I know For Sure that I am about to die…..give me Snickers until I want no more.    :0)

    89. peanut butter, nuts, pretzel, nougat, chocolate, crisps, and i really think malted milk would go really good in a candy bar.
i don’t know of any candy bars that have done it before. they should though.

or maybe they should make a peanut butter and marshmallow nougat bar, like a fluffernutter. but then it will be all sweet, and the bread won’t make it weird.
or a PB&J;bar. (i’m sure they’ve done that before though)

there’s a lot of good things they could make.

they should make reeses fast breaks with banana nougat and sell it as the elvis bar.
they had the elvis cup, and this sounds like it would taste way better.

      yummmm.

    93. I am a big fan of candy in general, though I’m trying to cut down (I tend to go for quality over quantity these days.) My all-time favorites include dark chocolate with orange, and my current favorite is the Ghirardelli Intense Dark Citrus Sunset bar—the bits of chewy candied orange peel and crispy toffee perfectly accent the dark chocolate.

The Snickers Rockin? Nut Road Bar sounds great, and like something I would really enjoy—thanks for the offer!

    96. Unfortunately I haven’t have time to read all the candy bar ideas posted so far.

A few years ago I came up with what I thought would be my ideal candy bar, but now I’m having trouble remembering all the details.

The crux of it is “marbits,” those crunchy (not pliable at all—they turn to powder when crushed) marshmallows as in Lucky Charms cereal or instant hot cocoa mixes. Combine a bunch of those (or even a continuous marbit slab) with carmel and enrobe with chocolate.

I’ve described this to several people and, alas, nobody but me thinks it sounds good.

My “ideal” candy bar would be something with dark chocolate, peanut butter, caramel (but not too sweet), a little salty something wethere it was peanuts or pretzle and a little coffee flavor in the chocolate. Not too much coffee, but just enough to impart a little smokyness to the chocolate.

    155. Oh man, the perfect bar….

Lets start with the Lake Champlain Dark Chocolate bar filled with Jamaican Rum Caramel as that is currently probably my favorite. Add to that extra salty pretzel bits and maybe a wafer/peanut butter layer or two from a Little Debbie Nutty Bar.

So pretty much it’s an ultra decadent Take 5, which is pretty un-original considering the original post, but hey, i can’t help it.

So the layer of wafer/PB followed topped by extra salty pretzel bits, slathered by an overly generous portion of the Jamaican Rum caramel all encased in the Lake Champlain Dark Chocolate used in the original Caramel Bar and then lightly sprinkeled with sea salt.

I can’t think of much better than that really.

    171. I’ve gotta say… I don’t have a fav candy bar… it all depends on the mood, kinda like a craving for certain foods or drinks.

However, one of my favorite creations I’ve done before is done with the following:

      Toasted pistachios
      Dried cherries
      Dark chocolate

This combination forms a great and somewhat healthy snack that disappeared instantly whenever I had guests by.  If this could be a candy bar, I’d likely purchase boatloads.

Snickers is really my ideal but instead of peanuts I would love to have hazelnuts in it. So nougat, caramel, hazelnuts, with a dark chocolate coating. I suppose I could live with milk chocolate but dark chocolate is my favorite.

    181. My ideal candy bar would be one whole candy bar divided in two. For me 1/2 Reese’s peanut butter and 1/2 Snickers.  You can take one bite from one end and turn it around and get a whole different experience.

    182. I love Twix and Kit Kat, so if they could make a Kit Kat, but in between layers of the cookie, there would be caramel and chocolate instead of just chocolate.. that’d be amazing

    183. My all time favorite candy bar is the Snickers bar! Thanks! This would be awesome to win!

    184. Boy, what a toughie!  My ideal would be the See’s Scotchmallow, with candied almonds in it.  And, in a truly ideal world, it would provide my daily requirement of fiber and vitamins, and have a negative calorie load, meaning just to eat it would be like spending 20 minutes on the treadmill.  Hey, I can dream!  grin

You rock, Cybele!  Thanks for trying all this stuff, so we don’t have to!

    185. i would love some sort of a pecan pie bar.  this is impossible but would be so good.  pecan pie filling, chunks of pecans and pie crust, and chocolate on the outside.

    186. My ideal chocolate bar would be similar to a Sky bar:

The chocolate would be a high quality semisweet dark so as not to detract from the fillings like milk chocolate tends to. It would be split up into three sections (or two side by side rows of three if it were a larger bar a la caramello). The first filling would be a creamy truffle center, similar to the taste and texture of a Lindor truffle, but a little lighter and less rich like a mousse. The second filling would be salted caramel, liquid but not runny. The third filling would be a high quality marshmallow, springy and not too sweet. I think I’d like that order so it isn’t too cloying or too rich to enjoy all at once, if you are so inclined smile

    188. Ideal candy bar is a tough call. Right now I’m thinking of something like a salt caramel with a cookie or pretzle crunch to go with it and a layer of Reeses peanut butter.

    189. Hmm, my ideal candy bar would be a cookie base (similar to the Ritter sport cookie base) and a creamy Nutella topping enrobed in good quality milk chocolate.

    190. My ideal candy bar would be a better version of the S’Mores bar.  It’s a great idea, but just isn’t as good as it should be.  Maybe a S’Mores bar made by Lindt?

    191. I love a Twix, but it seems to end too soon, so I guess my ideal would be a tricked out Twix, not larger or thicker but maybe with the addition of pecans pices….i love pecans and carmel….so your suggestion sounds fabulous…..someone needs to make that…..ooh, or, add a 3rd bar to the Twix package!

    192. When I was young (I’m 46 so be the judge as to when that was!) there was a candy bar that I LOVED. I believe it was just “Mars.” It was a thin marshmallow layer topped with a scattering of whole almonds (and maybe a thin layer of caramel). The whole thing was covered in smooth milk chocolate. It was my favorite candy bar and when it changed (I don’t know what it ultimately morphed into) I was very sad.

    194. I’d like an updated 7-Up bar, but without the few segments that were filled with, I presume, phlegm.

      1. Chocolate cream
      2. Vanilla cream
      3. Caramel
      4. Coconut
      5. Orange cream
      6. Cinnamon (very light) nougat
      7. Marshmallow

    195. I can hardly pick an ideal candy bar since I love so many so much…

But I think a candy bar that took a creamy nougat (like Milky Way) and then a toffee flavored caramel, with a dark chocolate enrobing, would be fantastic.

    196. My mouth is watering already! My ideal candy bar would have crunchy toffee bits, soft chewy caramel, some type of hybrid dark/milk chocolate, toasted almonds, and maybe a dash of sea salt on top to really set off the flavors.

    197. My ideal candy bar would be very good dark chocolate with almonds.

    198. I’d make mine with maybe a creamy maple nougat, toasted pecans, rich dark chocolate with white chocolate drizzled all over it. Yums!

    199. My ideal chocolate confectionary would be a Ferrero Rocher ball without the wafer layer.
