Mint Crisp M&Ms (Indiana Jones)Mars has a series of candies coming out with a marketing tie-in to the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull movie. (Which is set to premiere in the US on May 22nd.) This is rather similar to the stunt last year with Shrek the Third and the Pirates of the Caribbean movie the year before. The standard Milk Chocolate & Peanut M&Ms got a new skin: a fun shift in their colors and little Indiana Jones inspired icons on some of them. Then, of course, to really excite candy fans they’ve done something completely new, the Limited Edition Mint Crisp M&Ms. It’s not like they’re completely new though, there were once Crispy M&Ms in the United States (go to Australia if you miss them) and the seasonal Mint M&Ms. The package is one of the busiest known, rivaled perhaps only Pirate Pearls. There are lots of leaves all over the front, which at first I thought were mint, but turned out to be various palm and jungle-y things (I haven’t the foggiest what’s going on with Indy’s arm and that big palm leaf though). We’re encouraged to “Dig New Mint Crisp M&Ms” in the top left of the package and down in the lower right we’re told to “Get M before they’re Lost”. The Green M&M wearing a pith helmet is looking admiringly at Indy saying, “Treasure is a girl’s best friend.” At first I thought it was a little creepy that Green has the hots for Indy, then I realized that the Green M&M is actually a year older than Harrison Ford. (M&Ms were introduced in 1941, Harrison Ford in 1942.) There’s only 1.4 ounces in the bag, but that little bit of air inside each center does wonders to bulk them up. I was really looking forward to these, though it’s interesting to note that George Lucas has cautioned fans of the Indiana Jones movies not to build up their hopes to unreasonable levels. (And I think I know a bit about how much Lucas can let fans of a franchise down.) They don’t look so great, some are horribly bumpy and the size variations are pretty extreme, from rather sphere-like ones smaller than a regular M&M all the way up to large ones that could be mistaken for Almond M&Ms. The little icons are themed shapes that include the letter M. There are pyramids, masks, a compass ordinal and even a hat like Indiana Jones wears. They’re rather irregular as well, but more obvious on the themed Milk Chocolate M&Ms: But shape and color aside, it’s what’s inside that counts, right? The crispy shell gives one kind of crunch, then a layer of mostly semisweet chocolate strongly flavored with mint and then a bland crispy center that has a light kick of salt to it. They’re really easy to keep crunching away at ... a little chocolate, a little mint, a little crisped rice. Kind of like a Girl Scout Thin Mint. I’d be happy to see these as a seasonal item, though I doubt I’d eat them as often as the Almond M&Ms. I suspect they’ll be a huge hit. Rebecca already got a hold of these and has a review of the Adventure Bar, too. I’ll have the Snickers Adventure bar review soon. Thanks to Define23 for helping me to find them here in Los Angeles. UPDATE: Sera at Candy Addict also has a review now & I have the Snickers Adventure Bar. These are also available as a limited edition in Japan, here’s a photo I found by CindyC81 (you too can share photos in the Candy Blog Flickr Photo Pool). Related Candies

Meticulously photographed and documented reviews of candy from around the world. And the occasional other sweet adventures. Open your mouth, expand your mind.

I’m such a sucker for anything Indy that I felt compelled to pick some of these up at CVS yesterday. They are too sweet for my taste, but you’re right, they’re very Thin Mint-y.
Additional note, you can also come over to the UK for Crispy M&M;‘s, should you fancy that over Australia.
“Thin Mints” were the first thing that came to mind when I ate these, too. I think they’re fantastic, but have been having a heck of a time finding them with any consistency. Glad to see them finally reviewed on here!
I remember having these in Hong Kong last summer as well. The green ones look a bit like green peas to me with their round shape. The M&Ms;aren’t fancy, high quality chocolate, but I did like the crisp and crunch.
haha! cant believe you reviewed these, as my wife bought be a bad to try just this weekend. i think i even went on candyblog on saturday to see if they had been reviewed. too funny!
anyway, i thought they were ok, nothing great. somthing about crispy and mint didnt sit well with me, but i do have to admit the bag was empty before i realized. id be curious to try these as a mix-in with mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Yet another ‘Limited edition’ :D :D these do look yummy though. good review Cybele great stuff.

“I haven?t the foggiest what?s going on with Indy?s arm and that big palm leaf though”
Hilarious. I think that’s a photoshop disaster there.
Do they still make the original crispies? I have these (In Canada!) I find them overpowering. Not a big mint fan…
I found these dissapointing when I tried them as I was expecting something entirely different. There is a chocolate bar here called Mint Crisp which is sort of…aerated boiled mint flavoured lolly (can’t think of a better description) that is covered in chocolate. This was what I was expecting inside my m&m;.
That’s the perfect way to describe the flavor - Girl Scouts Thin Mints! Yum- that’s why we polished off the big bag so quickly
I just bought a bag and was wondering if you reviewed them yet.
I was amazed why I took out one and it was huuuge, then poured out the rest of a bag and realized they weren’t all that size.
I love mint chocolate and crispy m&ms;, so these are like heaven in a bag for me.
The bag is a little small though and it makes me sad they’re promotional, I’d choose these over regular m&ms;any time.
these look great, but I’ve had a hang up lately with candies using high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors & flavors and general poor quality ingredients in their chocolate products. I like reading the reviews of the decent and good chocolate, but I just can’t eat M&M;‘s anymore. There’s a bunch of candies as you can imagine that fall in this category for me. I still enjoy reading the thorough reviews and opinions of candy I won’t eat, this is a great blog!
Checked these out at M&M;World on a recent jaunt into Times Square to see a comedy show. By “checked these out” I mean my SO snatched a couple from the by-the-pound dispensers and asked me to try one, and they were actually not horrible, but not something I could eat too much of, since I found the mint a bit harsh after just two.
I wonder if these are the same as the Japanese Cripy Mint M&Ms;(my pic is on the Flickr Candy Blog group). I thought the mint was too overpowering.
mm these are really good!
have you seen the Snickers bar that they have out for this as well? it’s a ‘snickers adventure bar’. on the back it describes itself as
‘rich chocolate, crunchy nuts, and a cliffhanger kick of exotic spice and a hint of sweet coconut flavor’
i picked one up, but haven’t had the chance to try it yet…
The mint crisp M&M;‘s were o.k. Mint cookie tasting.
I just found the ‘big bag’ of these last night at my local megamart. My toddler thought they were pretty good. For some reason, I was expecting them to be like the regular M&M;‘s only mint (like what we usually see during the holiday season) despite the fact that I had already read the review and KNEW they were crispy. I guess my mind only goes one way when I see chocolate and mint.
Nevertheless, these weren’t bad. I like crunchy food, and I thought these were pretty decent. Then again, I wouldn’t eat more than say 5 or 6 at a time anyway.
I picked these up at the store today and started eating them WAY too fast. I knew I had to get them baked into something or the rest of the bag didn’t stand a chance. I opted for some Chocolate Brownie cookies and added in these along with some semi-sweet chocolate chunks. FABULOUS. I’ll look for a few more bags of these and stock up for sure!
After recently discovering your website (love it, by the way!), decided to buy some of these. Have to say that I was disappointed…the mint was too strong, and other than the additional crunch, tasted identical to the Christmas/Holiday Mint M&M;‘s….more chocolate crisp and perhaps some vanilla to temper the mint would have worked.
After reading your review, I knew I had to go out and try these. M&M;‘s are like crack to me, I can’t stop eating them! Well today after lunch my girlfriend and I decided to stop at Rite-Aid to sate our sweet tooth. We looked around the store and only found the big bag and decided against it, too much! So we went up to the registers and spied a whole case of the single serve bags! We helped ourselves to two bags each as they hadn’t even put them out on the shelves. I have to say they were quite minty and kind of refreshing. I love M&M;‘s so it’s hard for me to give them a bad review.
P.S: Cybele, why is a semicolon inserted between my M and the apostophe in my above post?
I finally found these today and I love them! They are a bit… grainy/sharp from the center crispy, but I like the balance of textures and flavors. The mint is just strong enough to make me want to stop eating after a handful. If not for that, I could down a big bag.
i finally found these! granted, it was at the M&Ms;store in times square. but YUM! i went back and bought another $5 worth to bring home.
I wasn’t a big fan of the Indiana Jones Snickers Adventure bar (which tasted a little like a Snickers dunked in Coconut Suntan Lotion) but these rock! I’m glad they went with the semi-sweet chocolate too. They are like mini Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies, and that’s a good thing. I went back to the store and grabbed 3 more bags!
Ugh, I tried some of these that a guy in class had. They weren’t that bad, but soon afterwards I had a wave of nausea to beat the band. Maybe I’m allergic to something in the ingredients.
On the other hand, I miss Crunchy M&Ms;. Sigh.
A little less crisp and a little more chocolate and it woud have been perfection for me.
Searched for these after reading your review, because I love mint. I finally found them at a CVS in D.C. while I was there for a conference. I never would have been on the lookout for them if not for your review - thanks!
I think these are fantastic. I’m pretty picky about my chocolate, but the strong mint and the crisp make it worth a foray into corn syrup and artificial dyes. This is possibly the best special, limited-edition candy I’ve had in years.
these are so yummy
I am a HUGE fan of these little morsels. I love the strange crunchy and mint combo. However, I don’t like the lack of candy in the bag or the inconsistency of the size. But still a great taste I can’t get enough of.
I can not find these anywhere in SC! it is annoying me!!!!!!
I bought these mint m&ms;and we could not leave them alone. I have been looking everywhere and can not find them. If it was for a limited time it sure was not for very long. Can I order these on line? Will they be available again?
Karin
Can you still get the giant M & M candy holders? You used to get them years and years ago. You can put the candy inside them and open a hatch to pour them back out…
Can you still buy bags of Mint Cris M&M;‘s ???
They are so wonderful I think I am craving them!!!
Wow, these are great! I really hope they stay in production permanently. They’re soooo good. I keep getting cravings for them every now and then. Oh, and they are incredibly good with ice cream too
I personally would rather have Mars replace the peanut butter M&Ms;with these! They’re a perfect combination of chocolate, mint, and crunch.
These are the best M&M;‘s I have ever had. I took three bags to work and now everyone in the my office is hooked. I hope that Mars brings them back.
These are awesome and crisp! I like the colors,
These are addictive! I hope they come back (or maybe I don’t).
These were “superb,” definitely. I would award them a ten out of ten, easy!
I would like to be able to buy mint crisp m&m;‘s but can’t seem to buy them in canada since Christmas. They were SUPERB!! I love them!!
Diane
I am not going against your decision, but for me it would be a nine.
i wish they would come back out with these in ny these were the best m&ms; ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
