Inside Out Junior Mints

Name: Junior Mints Inside Outs
Brand: Junior Mints (Tootsie Roll Industries)
Place Purchased: 99 Cent Only Store
Price: $.99
Size: 5.0 ounces
Calories per ounce: 126
Type: Mint

I got an instant message from a former colleague the other day about these. I hadn’t seen them, but sure enough they were just waiting for me at the 99 Cent store last week.

The Inside Outs are a white chocolate shell with a dark chocolate minted cream filling. They’re not at all like Junior Mints, except for the fact that they’re junior sized and minty. Where a regular Junior Mint has semi-sweet chocolate and an oozy mint filling, the Inside Outs have no real chocolate taste. Where Junior Mints are rather low in fat (for a chocolate candy), the Inside Outs don’t have that much more fat but their second ingredient (after sugar) is Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil ... yes, the dreaded trans fats.

Even the description on the box is a little uninspiring “Dark Chocolatey Mints in a Smooth White Coating.” Mmm, don’t you just love white coating? And the word “chocolatey” screams “I have no real chocolate in me!”

If you dig Junior Mints, stick to Junior Mints ... they can hardly be improved. They’re usually a good value (the standard single serve box is 1.84 ounces) and pretty easily understood ingredients. There are real white chocolate mint candies out there and I advise seeking them out - real white chocolate uses cocoa butter which is not only a monosaturated fat it’s just smoother. The Inside Outs are a limited edition, so if you want to give them a try, you’d better hurry.

  1. How about reviewing some of Target’s new “Choxie” line of pseudo-gourmet chocolates?
I’ve heard mixed feedback on them, so far, but I stopped by Target yesterday and found the trendy little packages so adorable, and the artisan squares with their flavored chocolates so enticing.
Currently, I’m munching Choxie chocolate-covered espresso beans like a maniac.  A MANIAC.

    Love the blog!

    Hi Sarah! Thanks for reading.

I just found out about the Choxie line yesterday via Slashfood - so I’ll keep an eye out for them. I’m not due for a Target run for another week or so (gotta get some Halloween candy!), but I’ll definitely pick some up. I’m looking forward to the chile ones (they’re oddly not on the Target website at the moment).

  3. these reverse jr mints are an awesome find! “newsy”! i never realized they were tootsie-roll-related; have you seen that there’s also a new (might be limited ed) VANILLA tootsie roll?

i did an item on choxie yesterday. a couple of notes of interest (maybe): before posting, i googled it and, aside from Slashfood, there were almost no hits. today, i googled it again and there are at least a DOZEN hits. i’ve read that some food blogs accept stipends to review products. the unprecedented avalanche of “choxie” hits that have suddenly popped up in the last 24 hours makes me wonder if choxie is such a product?

secondly, i’m sad to report that the choxie line completely usurped the “retro” candy aisle at my superT. i’m wondering if that will be the case at all target stores?

and thirdly, if you haven’t already read it in one of the suddenly-thousands of choxie postings, all target stores will be doing free samplings of the line on sat nov 5.

  4. I got a big bag of Tootsie Rolls assortment (I guess it’s for Halloween, but will never make it). In there they have the little midget flavored Tootsie Rolls, including vanilla!

They’ve got blue wrappers. Another flavor is lemon.

TG - the info on the Target tasting for Choxie is great ... I’ll know to avoid it that day!

I think vanilla tootsie rolls have been around for a long time, or maybe the were discontinued for a while. I remember a family friend having a jar of them whenever I went over as a kid. There were a bunch of flavors, orange, lemon and I think strawberry in addition to the vanilla.

As Russ points out, maybe they’re only made for Halloween.

I’ll have to look it up somewhere, but I don’t think Junior Mints were always a Tootsie product.

  8. As of September 2009, they seem to have changed the ingredients for these. The second ingredient is now “Partially Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil” instead of vegetable oil. The nutrition facts state “Trans Fat 0g” as well. They have also become a victim of the rampant drive-by candy downsizings, coming in smaller 4-ounce boxes now.

  9. My wife and I both love your inside out mints after discovering them in a dollar store. However, after several months, they disappeared from the shelves and we are not able to find them anywhere in our area,
Can you tell us where we might be able to purchase them in the Charlotte area?

        Thank you

  10. Hello, let me introduce myself. I am Rachel, the # 1 junior mint fan! I have a junior mint hall of fame that includes a carton of junior mint ice cream that holds all of the other junior mint souvenirs that I have collected. I am 11 years old. I think Turkey Hill should keep junior mint ice cream as a permanent flavor. I don’t think it is necessarily good to keep every flavor you invent a limited edition flavor. For all of those ice cream lovers who like one of your flavors, it will disappoint them as it did to me when junior mint ice cream got expelled from your factory.I suggest that you keep all of your flavors a permanent flavor. That is all. I hope you read my letter of recommendation and consider it.
The # 1 junior mint fan,
              Rachel

  11. I love Junior Mints, but DO NOT like the new inside outs!  I had to try them, but will go back to the originals…

  12. Remember me? #1 Junior mint fan? Well I think the inside outs are gross. Same with the pastels. The inside isn’t creamy and delicious as the orignal and the outside isn’t even minty. The peppermint crunch on the other hand are amazing. Great invention! I have yet to try Junior mint minis. I can’t seem to find them. If anyone has found them please tell me where to find them. Thank you! I hope you consider making junior mint ice cream a permanent flavor.
            Your #1 fan,
              Rachel

  13. I found the Inside Outs in a Dollar Tree several months ago and tried them - and LOVED them!!!  Sorry to say they have not been back on the shelf.  Went to Tootsie Roll web site and they have a link to Inside Outs but when you click on it, you go to th Junior Mints.  It does say limited edition so perhaps they are gone for good.  To me the Inside Outs are much better than regular Junior Mints.  The taste is less sharp and they are delicious.

  14. Hello, Rachel again. I disagree. Junior Mint originals are by far the best. The only other kind that may be tied with that are the junior mint peppermint crunch. The only kind that I have not yet tried are the Junior Mint Minis. I can’t seem to find them anywhere. If anyone here knows where to find them please write back. Thank you.

            #1 Junior Mints Fan,
