Wonka’s Oompas

Name: Oompas
Brand: Wonka (Nestle)
Acquired from: CandyWarehouse.com
Price: $.80 each
Size: 1.85 oz
Calories per ounce: 108
Type: Fruit Chew

Now, when I was a kid there was a candy called Oompa-Loompas and they were nothing like this. Well, they were something like this - they came in a bag and were about the same size as these but they were like a mash-up of M&Ms and Reese’s Pieces (this is all a vague recollection, correct me if I’m wrong). When you bit into the little disks (like fat, large, plain M&Ms) the top layer was peanut butter cream and the bottom was milk chocolate and it was all covered in a bright candy shell.

Wonka discontinued those pretty quickly.

Now we’ve got the new Oompas which are pretty much jumbo Skittles.

Oompas are brightly colored and about the size of garbanzo beans (about two or three times the size of Skittles). Where most of us eat two or three Skittles at a time, I’d probably only eat one of these at a time. Thus losing out on one of the great things of Skittles which is flavor combos - you put a lemon and lime in your mouth at the same time. Generally with Skittles consumption I spill the bag out on my desk and separate them and eat pairs of comparable flavors - citrus with citrus, although lemon can be combined with grape or strawberry, etc.

Okay, enough with the Skittles comparisons. Oompas come in six flavors: Green Apple, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, Grape and Strawberry. What’s especially interesting about eating these is that they’re very sweet when you start to chew and they get more sour and zesty as you go (which is the opposite in most chews). Though I don’t care for the intense sweet start, these have a nice finish and are less grainy that some other chews. Think of them more like Starbursts than Skittles.

My thing about these assorted flavor packages of stuff is that I invariably only like a few of the flavors. I don’t care for the cherry at all, though it does have a strong flavor. I didn’t like the strawberry or green apple either, and again, that’s personal preference, I’m not saying they were bad. What I did like was the orange and lemon and the grape was just okay. If I liked the majority of the flavors, I think I’d be able to give this a higher rating. As it is, they’re pretty good and I wouldn’t turn them down if you put a big bowl in front of me and I could discreetly pick out the flavors I like.

Interesting fact from the wrapper: made in New Zealand.

UPDATE: Tracy commented that she can’t find an image of the original wrapper. Here’s one from Imaginary World of one version of the wapper and here’s another.

UPDATED UPDATE (4/17/07): For lovers of the original Peanut Butter Oompas, you might want to try the Easter M&M Peanut Butter Speck-Tacular Eggs for a more consistent ratio.

Rating: 7 out of 10

  1. YES!! Someone else that remembers the original Oompas candy. I was wild for those. They were plump and peanut-buttery. I don’t remember there being any chocolate in them though. Have you tried Peanut Butter M&M’s? They are very close to the Oompas. Reeses Pieces are good too. I’m going to the store now…

  2. I have been searching all over for the original Oompas candy (half peanut butter, half chocolate, in a hard candy coating).  I’m so disappointed that they didn’t come back with those, as they were my favorite candy as a kid.

  3. I LOVED these also as a child and wish I could at least find a picture of what the wrapper used to look like! I can’t even find a picture on the internet…strange.

  4. I adore Oompas (I’m too young to remember the originals, though).  The chew is extremely unique and whilst I agree w/you on some of the flavors (green apple, bleck - lemon, scrumptious), if you shove a bunch in your mouth they all start to taste the same.  I hope they stay around for a while - they could use a tropical fruit variation like Skittles offer.

  5. I absolutely loved the old fashioned Oompa half chocolate half peanut butter, my family thought I was crazy until I found this website thank you for saving my good name..
I would love to find somewhere that still has these but a picture would be great to show my kids I’m not crazy.
The good candy was truly back in the 70’s

  6. I have looked at small stores all over trying to find oompa loompas and I’m sorry to find out they’re gone.Is there anywhere we can go to petition them to bring them back?  I also miss the seven up bar.  It was like a box of chocolates in one bar.

Pam - it looks like they’ve been discontinued.

You might want to poke around online - you might want to buy a box of them.

I found that they were still in stock at CandyDirect:

  11. Lets face it, Reeses candy doesn’t hold a candle to Wonka’s OOMPAS.  M&M peanut butter tried, but missed the mark.  I too wish they would bring back the oroginal OOMPAS!
Come on Hershey, give them another go!!!

As far as I know, the old Oompas were made by an independent company under the Wonka name. Nestle is now in charge of the Wonka brand, so it’s possible that now that they’ve discontinued this version of the Oompas they’ll experiment with the old version.

The big thing is that Wonka doesn’t really do chocolate. They have the “Wonka Bar” and the “Donutz” but I don’t see them as widely distributed as the sugar candy part of the Wonka line that’s been around for so long.

  14. Nothing in the Wonderful World of Candy has EVER come close to the ORIGINAL chocolate and peanut butter Oompas!  True, the M&Ms; attempt is “fair-to-middlin’” and they’re a decent enough imitation.  But there’s the rub—they’re an IMITATION!  The original Oompas were a wee bit larger, a good deal “plumper,” and their shiny, smooth outside shells have NEVER been duplicated!  NEVER!

Please, Nestle, I beg of you—bring back the original Oompas, or contract out and allow someone else to try?  Tiny little multi-colored “Sixlets” come close to the “Oompa FEEL, texture, and taste” in several ways as well, so perhaps the company in charge of “Sixlets” could be contracted to give it a go?  PLEASE bring back our beloved Oompas?!  If E.T. had ever followed, and swallowed, a trail of Oompas, he never would have “phoned home,” but would have eternally FLOURISHED here on Earth with Elliot—AND Willie Wonka!

    Oompas FOREVER!

    Thank you!!

I remember the original OOMPAS.  They were so incredibly good.  I don’t remember them having any chocolate inside, but maybe they did, as others have said.  I just remember that they had a wonderful peanut butter ingredient inside the hard M&M style shell. That peanut buttery interior had a taste that I have never been able to find replicated in any candy since. I do love Reeses cups, and I love Peanut M&M’s, but they just don’t have that special “something” that the original OOMPAS had. It’s quite amazing that they disappeared without a trace. This website is the first time that I have found mention of this candy anywhere. My friends and family don’t even remember the original Willy Wonka OOMPAS candy.  I wish I could get the recipe to the original candy. I would make them, myself, at home. It’s hard to believe that such a great tasting candy was discontinued like that. Makes me wonder what kind of an idiot made the decision to cancel production and sales of that product. Wish I could find that person and hold them accountable.

  17. I’ve never heard (until now) of the fruity Oompas.  But I can’t imagine anything being as wonderful as the chocolate and peanut butter ones!  For fruity stuff, there’s always Starburst, LifeSavers, Gummi Savers, Gummi Bears, Jolly Ranchers, etc., etc., etc.

But the original Oompas were ONE OF A KIND!  AND I MISS THEM SOOOO MUCH!!

  20. As with some of the other people on here, I’m much to young to remember anything before the fruity candy. All I remember is that a couple of years back, my sister, cousin and I would RAID the store just to get them, even though they were expired we bought them by the armloads. Finally, today as we were just passing by a random variety store on the way home, we found them! I was so glad, and still am :D I’m happy Canada has them, even if they’re randomly placed throughout.

  24. I have tried Peanut Butter M&M’s & would have to say that, per my recollection about the original OOMPAS, the two candies have distinctly different tastes. One thing I noticed about peanut butter m&m’s is that they have an unsatsifying aftertaste, whereas the OOMPAS had none. Even though they both present a peanut butter based inside ingredient, the taste of the original OOMPAS candy is in a league all it’s own. The taste was just too good to be true. In my opinion, this can not be said of PB M&M’s; although, the Peanut Butter M&M’s “are” quite yummy when mixed into ice cream. grin

Comment by Robert on 4/14/07 at 6:43 am #

  26. The original Oompas were GREAT!  They were my favorite treat to buy from the high school candy store after school - 50 cents a pack.  While Reese’s is good, there is nothing I have found better than the half chocolate, half peanut butter Oompas.  Given the success of Reese’s pieces (which I believe came out after the Oompas), maybe the Oompas were just a bit ahead of their time…I bet they’d be a hit if they came back out now!

Comment by PTabor on 6/06/07 at 11:18 am #
  27. Same here. I tried the M&Ms; chocolate peanut butter. Sad to say, a sure dissappointment to my beloved OOMPAS! I wonder If we all wnt to Hersheys and begged, they’d bring our treats back.  I have the same memory of getting my oompas fix at lunch, or after school as a teenager.  I’d have to say they are still my alltime favorite candy!!

  28. Just like the old Flying Saucer Wafer Candy (that I pay a fortune for when I can find them) - I would love to see the old Oompa Loompa PB/Choc original candy come back.  Come On!!!  It was fabulous!!!

Is this candy like the old TV shows, someone owns the copyright & will not release it (like some of the old TV shows, like Dark Shadows that we waited forever to be released?)

    Please bring it back!!!

  30. Just watched willy wonka and the Chocolate Factory as a family.  I told my kids that there used to be a candy I loved called Oompas ( nothing will ever compare) and a Scumptious candy bar, so yummy. The Scrumptious bar had a golden ticket that came inside ( it was a 10cent off coupon).
It’s too bad that Quaker Oats ( the original licensee for the wonka candy) gave up and sold it to nestle .

  31. Oh my gosh I am so glad I found others who also loved Oompas.  They were the best!  Half peanut butter and chocolate in a candy coating.  Sorry but m&ms; and reeses pieces cannot even come close to the taste…YUCK.  Thanks for posting the link to the original packaging.  Today is my birthday and what a great present to see them again.  Does anyone know of a petition site I can sign to get them back.  Todays candies are just plain boring and bad.  Bring them back.

  32. OMG—These were the BEST!  Yes, PB M&M;‘s are as close as we have, but NOTHING compares to the original.  There was something very special about the blend of flavors.  I was unaware that Quaker Oats did the originals—I intend to write them and express the interest.  I will point them to this blog.  Wish me luck, all you fellow original Oompa candy lovers!

  34. I am so glad other people loved and miss Oompas. For those of you who never had the pleasure, they were about the size of a nickel, maybe, and had a candy coating, but inside was half chocolate and half peanut butter.  The Reese’s pieces have a ‘waxy’ taste or texture to them, Oompas just melted in your mouth, there is nothing like them, except maybe if you can imagine a Reese’s peanut butter cup with a hard candy coating around the outside of it? Well, if anyone finds where to buy them or a petition to ge them back, LET ME KNOW, I’M IN!

  39. I just found Oompas today, at a vending machine at my son’s high school.  From the descriptions everyone is giving, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the originals (peanut butter and chocolate combined don’t do it for me, but please dont hate me!)  These fruity Oompas are delicious though.  I love Skittles, but these are ten times better, and you don’t have to grab a handful, one is a perfect size.  My only complaint, and only a small complaint, is that the colours of the strawberry (which I love) and cherry (not so keen) are too similar.  Otherwise, LOVE THEM!

  40. How exciting it was to find this site. I was just browsing and looking for my favorite childhood candies. Oompas were my fav. I truely think that if the manufacturers were to give this a go one more time it would be a huge success , and if the younger generation doesn’t take to it I think there are enough of us ole schoolers out there to revive this product. We need to get some type of a petition going for these giant dots of joy to make a comeback.

have never left…. What a disapponitment when they stopped making them.. Only to replace them with a sad failure. Bring them back with those’s

  42. Oompas was a favorite candy of mine also.  One of the reasons for its smooth texture and taste was palm kernel oil (not a health positive), but ooh were they good.  Seeing the wrapper brought back memories, because the package was skinny for such a big plump morsel, and you kind of squeezed them out one at a time.

The candy pictured at the top of this page was such a hit with me and everyone I know who loves Skittles. The problem was that you couldn’t find them anywhere - just some Walgreens and a few Toys-r-Us stores. Wish they’d bring those back!

I got so excited a few years ago, when I saw a package of Oompas in a vending machine…I thought, for a brief moment, that my dreams had come true (like when Taco Bell brought back the enchirito and Tas-T-O donuts reopened.) The let-down was unbearable when I found that they were chewy candies. Alas, once they reuse the name, I guess there’s not much chance they’ll bring back the original!

As you know, we no longer manufacture Wonka? Oompas? and have no remaining stock available. Sales volume was not great enough to justify space on the retailers’ shelves.

At this time we have no plans to bring back the product; however, please be assured that I have reported your inquiry to our Marketing Department.

  66. I so agree - the original oompa loompa candies were seriously fabulous - and yes, of course due to their size - near throat-chokers - BUT, one side was creamy melting chocolate with nestle-like crunch while the other was smoother than that of Reece’s peanut butter cup centers…truly a magnificent candy - I so want them - aka that chick in the white dress who wants a goose that lays a golden egg - “daddy, I want the original oompa loompa candy, NOW!” and several bags to keep me quiet for a few months!

I cannot believe I just found this site - a co-worker and myself were just trying to tell all the youngsters in our office about the original oompa loompas and how amazing they were - the young ones here kept trying to compare them to reese’s pieces and M&M peanut butter - not even close on either count.
I agree with many of the bloggers here that are begging for another try at the original oompa loompas - I am positive they would be a HUGE success now - they would send M&M’s running with their tales between their legs grin

Forever Wonka and the original oompa loompas !!!

  68. This is amazing !!!! so many people remembering the Oompa’s !!! I couldn’t get enough of them or Marathon’s ( the braided caramel and chocolate bar), Choco-lite’s ( the aerated chocolate bar) or Chick-o-sticks ( Atkinson’ corp..still available at Casey’s general) time has come for the Revolution, let our voices ring out and perhaps those who make the decisions will hear !! Even if it is just a temporary promo type of deal, they could feel the market out and decide then (and give us a chance to hoard the spoils like greedy little Augusta Gloops….Keep voicing and cross your fingers that someone important hears our pleas…or our whimpers, or begging, or pleading…...

  69. I am too young to have ever had the original oompas but I would love to try them. They sound so good. Right now I am pregnant and craving the fruity oompas so bad!! :( Why did they have to discontinue them?!! why why why?!?!!! Is there anything we can do? Is there anyone I can get ahold of??

  70. I also remember the old oompa loompa candies.  They were chocolate and peanut butter with a candy shell and were the size of Shrek M&M’s.  I thought they were at least as good as Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and were better than peanut butter M&M’s.  I believe the colors were orange, yellow, brown, possibly white, but I can remember.  They were so good and so were the regular Wonka bars back then.

  71. I also remember the PB/Choc Oompas as a kid in the 70’s. I’ve never found anything comparable. I pray that someone has the original recipe and either posts it or brings it back into production.  M&M or Reeses are a pathetic comparison to the original Oompas. Thanks to all of you out there that remember they really did exist. I can find very little info on the net about them. Please keep the posts coming.

  72. I remember the original Oompas candy.  This halloween I came up with what is the closest I’ve come by.  You take about 6 or 7 reece’s pieces and then take a bite of a Hershey bar.  Its pretty close.  The chocolate in an M&M just isn’t right.

    Anyway just thought I’d share.

  73. I agree with all of you who loved this candy and miss it. I can’t believe how many are on here and there must be millions more like me that didn’t know there was a spot like this to voice how much we liked them and want them back. I have search since I was young and could never find them now i know why:(
PLEASE bring the original OOMpas back

  74. I have looked all over for the original Oompas candy - half peanut butter and chocolate.  I can’t find them and I suppose they have no plans in bringing them back. They were the best - my favorite candy ever.  I will continue to look for them and hope one day I’ll get lucky and they will bring them back! PLEASE and hurry - I want my children and my grandson to get to enjoy a great candy.  Who doesn’t like chocolate and peanut butter in a crunchy shell!!!

  77. I also loved the original oompas and wish they would come out again. They were the best chocolate and peanut butter candies made. Judging from all of the comments above and still not seeing them out on the market can only mean that nobody is listening to our pleas. :(

  78. Wow!  I am amazed at how many other people remember these. They were my favorite candy as a child. I would love to have one again.

  79. Wow! I cant believe how many of us remember them!!! They were my favorite!!! Well, those and red flipsticks, with the foil wrapper! Luckily a company still makes the flipsticks…
My sister thinks I made up these memeories of a candy that never existed!!!  LOL!

  80. Oompas were THE best !!!! Also miss tart n tinys and the ORIGINAL trident bubble gum. Also the original “air” chocolate bar but can’t remember the name but the pkg was brown with yellow writing. Why do these companies mess with perfection ???

  81. I loved the original Oompas, told my boys about them, they are young adults, they think I’m imagining it all. peanut butter M&Ms; don’t even come close to these. I too wish they would bring them back!!

  82. What can we do to bring them back!!?!  I love that so many of us remember them and talk about them, but what can we do to have them again?

  83. I miss the orginal Oompas candies! My son asked me what my favorite candy was growing up and that was my answer. The half peanut butter and half chocolate hard shell candy was awesome!

  84. I was just searching for the peanut butter chocolate oompas online, hoping to find them somewhere and your blog came up!

  85. Reeses Pieces peanut butter are nowhere near the taste/texture of the original Oompa Loompas!  More of the Reese Peanut Butter cup texture.  They were delicious - wonder WHY they stopped making them.

    Also, remember Sugar Daddy NUGGETS?
And the CHARMS suckers that were HUGE and came in that really dark colored cellophane - Blue or Red?

Comment by Beezus on 7/18/12 at 5:51 pm #
  86. I’m 50, but never had any of the “original” Oompas.  From the description, I doubt I’d have liked them.  I can’t stand the peanut butter M & Ms.  I’m not a huge M & Ms fan either.  I like the peanut ones, but that’s pretty much it.  I like Skittles as well, but they are nothing like a fruity Oompa.  The only thing they have in common is the flavors are based on fruits.  The chew from an Oompa is leaps beyond the chew experience of one or a handful of Skittles.  I sure wish Wonka would bring them back.  wink

Comment by Mary on 7/26/12 at 8:34 am #
  87. Sure do wish they would make the original Oompas again! They were MUCH, MUCH better than the peanut butter M&M’s!

  88. My grandmother worked for the ORIGINAL “Wonka” candy makers, back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Oompa Loompas were a large 1/2 peanut butter 1/2 chocolate candy surrounded by a sugar shell. Your recollection is correct. I used to eat a CRAP ton of Wonka Candies (my grandmother brought loads home - free).

  89. Yeah, count me another one still searching for the original PB OOMPAS…Nothing since has came remotely close to how good the original was.  Yo…Nestle…<  Why do you think oodles of people have been looking 25+ years and still haven’t given up…????????  I tracked it down thru company buyouts, etc…contacted company in Switzerland…(nestle headqtrs)...no luck! Got the cookie cutter “no demand” response.  Even got booted from eBay for running an ad…(got tons of hits though!) Sooner or later, someone who wants the credit and fame will do a real-life throwback of these OOMPAS….limited time…facebook viral sensation…entire 1 million pound supply will sell out in less than 1 hour, etc…blah, blah, blah.  Until then, I’ll keep dreaming.

  90. We should send them this blog to show them demand!

  91. The original oompa loompa candy must of been delicious, but I know about it that kind, I know about these one’s. And they’re so great, they’re soo good, they’re sooo delicious themselves, and you can’t find these in store either! Please bring back Oompa!

  92. This was the best candy EVER! I use to give them to my crew for doing a Great job. Why did you discontinue them the candy you are comparing it to does not compare! Please bring them back I and many other people really liked them:)

  93. What I need to know is how on earth are we going to get these people to start making the Oompa chocolate and peanut butter candies again!  Not only would they make a killing, but they would be making a lot of people extremely happy - including me!  Every time I settle for a bag of Peanut Butter M&M’s I am reminded of the wonderfulness of Wonka’s Scrumpdiliicious Peanut Butter Bar and the Oompas = highly addictive!!!

  95. Oh My Gosh!!! I thought I was the only person who loved the original Oompas!  I am always looking for them.  Anytime I see an “old time” candy store, I ask for them!  Never can find them.  They were my childhood favorite.  The chocolate and peanut butter combo was so good.  and they were bigger than M & M s.  I hope they bring them back!

Comment by Jean on 5/12/13 at 2:06 pm #
  96. I agree with everyone. I have been looking for the Oompas too. I loved those as a kid. I dont know how they could have renamed a fruit chew candy after my childhood favorite. Please bring them back I will be first in line.

  98. I just loved those oompas back in the day! Two to three times the size of m&m’s, and perfectly split in half with chocolate and PB!! How perfect can you get?!?!  My #1 all time favorite candy, ever. I would love to see Oompas come back. It would take over the industry!

Comment by Chris M on 8/23/13 at 7:18 pm #
  99. Oh my! I remember selling these(peanut butter kind!) at the ice cream shop where I worked in High School in San Diego in late 70’s.  Now I’m in MA and I’ve asked people about Oompas and nobody has heard of them! I absolutely loved them! There was another kind of chocolate bar at the same time-something with peanut butter, wafers and chocolate which was equally as good. Anyone remember these? Not sure if they were put out by Wonka company as well?

Comment by Audrey on 10/28/13 at 8:05 am #

  103. I had a friend who worked for Willie Wonka back when we were little. He would bring Oompas home for us to share. They were the best!! Peanut Butter M & M’s at Easter time are the only thing that comes close to them. Sure wish they hadn’t discontinued them!

Comment by Nancy on 6/30/14 at 6:31 pm #
  104. Today’s peanut butter m&ms; are not nearly as good as the chocolate/peanut butter Oompas were and these m&ms; sell out very quickly wherever they’re offered.  If Oompas were available again, they’d be a money-maker for sure!  There must a brave candy maker out there who’s willing to make a new version of our delicious Oompas!  The peanut butter in the current m&m version is too hard rather than creamy and also not sweet.

Comment by Patty on 11/10/14 at 8:40 pm #
  105. i thought I was the only one that remembered the chocolate and peanut butter Oompas! They were the best. It seemed like they were not around very long. No, peanut butter M&M’s are not even close. Neither are Reece’s pieces. I never heard of the fruit ones. Please bring back the original ones. I want my grown children to be able to taste what I have talked about!

They are grown and have never heard of them. Peanut butter M&M’s do not come close. Neither do Reece’s pieces. Please bring these back. They did not seem to be around for very long. 107. From the dates above, this thread has been active for nearly 10 years and everyone says the same, “Bring back the original WW’s peanut butter & chocolate Oompas.” Obviously Willy’s not watching this site because only an idiot could miss the significance of such a loyal and enthusiastic fan base for a candy that disappeared 35 years ago (that’s the 1st Willy, circa 1971, not the 2005 Willy of which calling him just ‘idiot’ might be an act of generosity… but I digress).
Toss my hat in the ring - There isn’t another candy I’d like more to see, back on the shelves and in the movie theaters, than Willy Wonka’s PB&C Oompas!

    Comment by K.Cole on 2/05/15 at 2:01 pm #
  108. Omg…still look for the original PB Oompas today while on a trip. I’d gladly pay for s case of these at a time if I could get them…Wonka needs to bring the original back. Nothing else compares & my kids have never gotten to see what good candy really is

  109. My best friend and I talk about the original oompaa all the time. They were the best and have nothing has ever come close to replacing them to date. I hope someday someone brings them back. They were wonderful. They always seem to discontinue my favorites…..oompa, cedar scented pledge, I the original smores cereal( the new cereal with the same name is yucky!). We will just keep hoping!!!

  110. I’ve been on suicide watch since the fruit Oompas have gone away. Who do I have to kill to get these back in production (Nestle I’m looking at you). If I had to take to the street to move the bags myself I would. Trump should make a law against the discontinuation of such amazing and heavenly pieces of candy. I guess Oompas are in a better place now. “God must be in heaven now that Oompas are dead”

Side note, I’ve visted this page every year for damn near 10 years, always hoping maybe wishing things would change. I propose we boycott all candy (put em all out of business) until the return of the OompaS :(
