There used to be rules and people followed them. Oh, they were informal; things like no white shoes after Labor Day, your shoes should match your belt. Seasonal merchandise wouldn’t be put out until the previous holiday was over (no Christmas goodies before Thanksgiving). But those rules are long gone.
So I shouldn’t have been surprised to see Halloween candy out already at the RiteAid before Labor Day. But at least this was something different. Instead of fruity flavors, this twist is from Brach’s Milk Maid line and is called Caramel Candy Corn.
Most of us have a love-hate relationship with Candy Corn. Well, some folks have a love-love or a hate-hate ... which averages out in the big scheme of things to a love-hate for the general population. I hate-love candy corn. I don’t really like eating it, but I love looking at it and the smell of it.
This stuff smells really promising, if a little overwhelming. Like caramelized sugar. It smelled so great in the store, I really wanted to take it home. Of course in the car (which I admit was as hot as one of those scented oil diffusers) the smell started getting to me in the way that candle stores do.
It all boils down to this, if you like Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly, you’ll probably like Caramel Candy Corn. I don’t and I didn’t.
The texture is good, a nice smooth fondant. The white tip is unflavored and the two lower layers, orange and brown, are butter flavored fondant. The caramel flavor that the smell implies is completely missing, instead it has that intense note of butter flavored popcorn just crackling away in the microwave.
I just didn’t like them as much as I wanted to. Not nearly as much as the Brach’s Autum Mix (candy corn, Indian corn and mellow cremes). I was really unhappy that it was $2.29 for the bag to boot ... yeah, it’s a 19 ounce bag, but what do I need 19 ounces of buttered popcorn flavored candy corn for?

OMG, Butter Popcorn Jelly Bellys? Those are my absolute favourite and I haven’t had them in years, now you’ve got me craving them all over again!
I’m looking forward to my boyfriend popping in to the international candy store (Cyber Candy) in a few weeks’ time and bringing me back a tiny bag of candy corn. Who cares that it’s only ten pieces and it’s twice the price of an pound bag in the States - when you can taste your childhood so easily there’s really no decision at all.
I loathe buttered popcorn Jelly Bellies. I’ll probably get these to give them a shot, if I can find a small bag. 19 oz is way too big for something so sweet and questionable.
What a coincidence, I was checking your blog last night to see if you had reviewed these yet. I saw these in Walgreens (they were on sale for $.99), I opted to buy the caramel apple flavor though. Have you tried these? I sure hope they don’t taste like buttered popcorn and apple!
Oh man. I have the weirdest love-hate relationship with candy corn and the pumpkin mallowcremes. I see them, I must have them, but I only want to eat like 5 before Im like okay, no more for a year. I had a bag of candy corn on my dresser waiting to be opened for two years, because I knew seconds after it was open I would not want to touch it.
Wow, these sound foul and I LIKE the buttered popcorn Jelly Bellies. I can’t conceive of how a Brach’s version of those could be any good.
You beat me to the punch! I thought I’d do a follow-up to my candy corn round-up from last year, including these and the caramel apple ones. But I also thought it was too early to be popping candy corn while still wearing linen and white shoes!
I don’t hate them, but I’ll stick with the traditional c.c., specifically, Target house brand or Zachary’s. All candy corn is not created equal, as I discovered: http://sugarsavvy.net/2006/10/18/title_139/
Great food styling, by the way. Especially the cirle of corn shot. Beautiful.
I’ll have to look out for this verity, because I LOVE candy corn. I was at Target on Saturday and saw that Hershey’s has Candy Corn Kisses. They are OK. A little on the sickly sweet side…but still pretty good if your craving something of the sort.
Great pictures, great review. I feel exactly like you about candy corn, the smell, the look so charming, the waxy sweet taste I can do without. But always so cheery to see. Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly- ieuck.
I have some of these on my desk right now. I don’t really like them, yet I can’t stop eating them. I also have the caramel apple version of them. They’re interesting.. They smell very apple-y but don’t taste all that apple-y to me. I keep eating those too.
This bothers me a little bit. I will actively avoid these.
I’m starting to feel like a crazy because I LIKED these!
These are marvelous!! I detected an almost brown sugar taste to them. While I will likely stick with the old-school candy corn for the general sugarfix, these are a welcome addition to the confection pantheon.
I really wish I had listened to your review and NOT bought these, because I LOVE them and am now addicted. Gaah!
Perhaps you don’t have very good taste in candy. A couple of bags of these went over very well in the office and everyone enjoyed the flavor as a new twist on the classic. Keep trying, though.
These are my new favorite candy, and regular candy corn is up there for me. I can’t believe the amount of people who don’t like them because they are sold out in every walmart I go to. Maybe I should try cvs or walgreens or something. Please bring them back next year in larger numbers, I’d love to see a caramel corn pumpkin, mmmm.
I am totaly hooked on these candies. I am having a hard time findinf them this year. When and where can I get these milk maid carmel corn? They are the best!!!!!!!
I’m with greg—these are my new favorite candy—and I can’t find them ANYWHERE… Bought one bag at Riteaid to try, now they’re sold out and no one else seems to carry them.
Hell with next year what about now? I cant wait
until next year. please send me a big big box of
of that caramel candy corn please.
