Milk Maid Caramel Apple Candy Corn

Milk Maid Caramel Apple Candy CornIt’s the first day of fall, so my thoughts turned to harvest.

Brach’s is pretty much the gold standard for Candy Corn for me. There are other good quality makers out there too, like Jelly Belly and Zachary, but I prefer the Brach’s stuff because I can actually taste the honey and that’s what I prefer.

Brach’s has a pretty extensive line of candy corn products and they’ve returned to shelves for fall. I’ve seen the Autumn Mix, Indian Corn and regular Candy Corn on shelves. I picked up this newer version called Milk Maid Caramel Apple Candy Corn this year. I tried the other flavor introduced last year as well, Milk Maid Caramel Candy Corn which I found tasted more like buttered popcorn than caramel.

Milk Maid Caramel Apple Candy CornThe pieces are fun and feel like fall and harvest. They’re a medium brown on the bottom, a milky red in the middle and have white tips.

Unlike my experience with the Caramel Candy Corn, this didn’t smell at all before opening the package. Once I did, I found it a pleasant mix of apple, sugar and vanilla - exactly what I would have expected from the name.

Most of the pieces seem pretty big and dominated by the red center.

Milk Maid Caramel Apple Candy Corn

Like most candy corn, this bag had its assortment of not-quite-ready-for-primetime players. These were shorter pieces that were missing one or more colors. I rather like the variation and ability to eat just one of the flavor layers if I want, so I don’t hold it against them.

The red center has a light apple flavor, rather like apple peels not the sour green apple candy flavor. The brown caramel layer at the bottom has a light salty hit to it and a butter flavor that bugged me when I just at the brown bits alone. But as I’ve noted before, confections that use Red 40 tend to leave a bitter aftertaste in my mouth. So I enjoy these for about five minutes and then I regret eating them. Then I toss them in a drawer in my desk, go away for the weekend and come back and it’s like I’ve completely forgotten about the aftertaste (maybe it has some sort of short-term memory wiping properties?).

As a novelty flavor, I like these better than most. I wouldn’t mind it being added to the Autumn Mix, but I still prefer Indian Corn. Brach’s also makes a Milk Maid Chocolate Caramel Candy Corn which isn’t even mentioned on their website but I saw on ebay. I’m still looking for it.

This candy corn has gelatin in it, so it’s unsuitable for vegetarians and isn’t Kosher or Halal.

  1. “...go away for the weekend and come back and it?s like I?ve completely forgotten about the aftertaste…”

Haha, reminds me of Lewis Black’s candy corn story.
I am definitely going to look for chocolate caramel candy corn.  I love candy corn, it’s addicting, I eat it until I am sick.

  3. We got this at work last year around this time, and it smells and tastes pretty good—until I eat a few pieces and the sugar starts rotting my teeth, haha.

Have you checked out your local Walgreens for the chocolate caramel candy corn? I saw a small bag there yesterday.

  4. My local San Diego Targets have the Chocolate Caramel Candy corn (on display with the Caramel Apple corn) .  I’m disappointed that they partially hydrogenated oil in both these flavors. They’re still fun to try, though!  smile

  6. I tried the carmel apple last year. I didn’t care for them. I thoughtthe apple flavor over powered the carmel. but it did smell great.

My friend found the chocoalte carmel candy corn at Target yesterday. She bought me a bag. They aren’t bad. I was at Walgreens today and saw them in the Halloween candy section

  7. Totally nibbling on these right now! they’re allright, I can see how they can be kind of overwhelming, but if candy corn is around, I’ll eat it until its gone. But the scent, Whoa. If i leave the open bag in the room, leave and come back, its like i have an old school Country Apple candle burning.

  8. I tried these as well; I enjoyed the flavour, but I think I still prefer normal candy corn ^_^

The chocolate caramel candy corn was the first candy corn I bought this year and for some reason can no longer find around here. But I loved it! You can definitely taste the cocoa. There is something very addictive about them. It was easy to sit there and mindlessly eat handfuls of them.

  10. I tried a bag of this stuff last Halloween and had pretty much the same experience.  You try it, it gets bitter, you forget about the bitterness, you try it again, etc.  I remember it being very tasty before the aftertaste distorts your perception of flavor-reality.

  11. I found the chocolate caramel corn in Target.  It’s good if you eat the entire piece all at once, but the artificial caramel flavor of the light brown layer is really off-putting when it’s eaten alone.  So if you’re the kind of person who eats her candy corn in layers (like me), I wouldn’t recommend them.

  12. Like I said in the forum, the chocolate caramel was good to me but for some reason, I didn’t really like the caramel apple. I got both at Wal-mart in the Halloween candy aisle.

  13. As others have noted, Target has the Chocolate Caramel Candy Corn. The Seattle store I visit actually was sold out of all but the Choc/Cara and the Caramel varieties. No sign of the Candy Apple though.

I can’t quite bring myself to buy the Chocolate Caramel ones, much as I want to try them. I have the feeling that I’d enjoy three or four and then still have a bag full.

Any other uses for candy corn besides the obvious?

  15. Those look far better than the candy corn-flavored hershey’s kisses I bought today. Honestly, I should have known better.

  16. I loved these…........just finished an entire bag myself…...I want more!  Candy corn season is dangerous for me.  I hoard the things.  Yummy!

  17. I adore this flavor, but can’t find it anywhere this year!! Someone commented on the apple overpowering the caramel…. Well, there’s caramel in everything, but hardly ever apple!! To me, it was/is the best part! grin

  18. Some people say eating Candy Corn is corny (pun intended) and old fashioned, but I have been hooked on them since I was a kid. The new flavors just add to my addiction. Last year I found Caramel Apple at Target in Seattle, but not this year. I always skipped the Chocolate because I thought it would overpower the Candy Corn taste I like so much.
Well I bought a bag this year because I couldn’t find the Caramel Apple. Glad I did because they are good with only a mild Chocolate flavor.
