KitKat Milkshake

I’ve been so caught up with Easter candy lately that I’ve been neglecting my regular candy. I couldn’t wait until the Easter rush is over to post about the Limited Edition KitKat Milkshake.

image

I’ve been looking everywhere for these and was surprised that they weren’t available at my trusty 7-11 that always seems to have new and limited edition products. Instead I found them at the Dollar Tree, which always makes me nervous that it’s old and skanky candy. How could it be old though, it’s limited edition!

The bar is described as: KitKat Milkshake - Crisp Wafers in Extra Creamy Malt Milk Chocolate (naturally and artificially flavored)

The bar was pretty looking, smooth and glossy, it was definitely fresh. But there was something off about it. It smelled a little musty, like an old, damp closet or something. I had a piece of it and decided it tasted musty too. I threw the rest out and started over with a second bar. This one doesn’t smell as musty, but still has a definitely “off” smell to it. I know that malt can sometimes be considered a gamy scent, but this just wasn’t it.

I decided that this was how it was gonna be and I plowed through to the tasting. First I needed to get past what I wanted the bar to be. I wanted it to be a malted KitKat ... I wanted creamy milk chocolate with malt between the wafers. But that’s not what it is, it’s malt flavor in the chocolate and I think the regular old wafers & cream we’re used to.  What it does taste like is a milkier version of a KitKat ... with a slight buttery taste, kind of like popcorn and kind of like coconut. These aren’t pleasant combinations in my realm of chocolate candy bars, so I wasn’t really enjoying it. In fact, as I got to the last finger, I was really sick of it and didn’t want to finish it.

I wonder if I just got a bad batch: News You Can Eat liked hers and CandyAddict found it acceptable. Suffice to say I was severely disappointed, especially since I loved the Limited Edition Twosomes Whoppers last year.

  1. How disappointing!  I *love* malt!  I think there should be a lot more of it around.  Awhile back you talked about candy eating rituals and I have one with chocolate covered malted milk balls.  I scrape a tiny part of the chocolate off, pop the thing into my mouth and use my tongue to hollow out the malt.  All that is left is the chocolate shell.  Now I want Whoppers.  *sigh*

  2. I hadn’t wanted to influence your review when I left a comment about these a few days ago, but now I can tell you…I hated them, too!  And KitKats are one of my favorite candies, so you’d think there would be some redeeming quality about this.  But no.

I don’t think you got a bad batch; I bought mine at Long’s Drugs so I’m sure it was fresh.  But it reminded me of the smell of carpet.  Blech.

  3. Bought one of these months ago, and the hubby and I totally agree - Horrible, horrible, horrible! We couldn’t get a malt taste, it just tasted like sour mocha to us. One of the few chocolate anythings I have ever dumped before finishing grin.

  4. Bummer. I was excited when I heard about these, but haven’t been able to find them yet. I think I’ll abandon the search now, but maybe they’ll come to their senses….

  5. In other bad-KitKat news, this past weekend I tried something called the KitKat Extra Creamy—I don’t know if this is the next in the series of limited-edition Kit Kats, or this one has been out for a while and I just hadn’t seen it.  Anyway, the only marked difference between the Extra Creamy and the regular was that this seemed to melt faster.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve had it with them trying to re-invent the wheel with the Kit Kat.  From now on I’m sticking with the classic version—unless I can somehow fall over the “undsiclosed location” where Steve Almond keeps his Kit Kat Darks.

  6. You already know how much I loved this because I e-mailed you begging you to review it.  ;P

Funny thing is…  I absolutely DETEST malt.  Hate it.  I think Whoppers are disgusting, same with the little Easter robin’s egg malt.  Ewww.

But I LOVED this Kit Kat, which I found to smell divine and taste creamy like hot cocoa.  I wish yours came out as good!  :(

Karen - I had an Extra Creamy some months ago and found it so ordinary that I couldn’t even muster the interest to post about it. Yes, I agree that it was more melty.

As for the “undisclosed location” for KitKats in dark chocolate ... try Canada! They have a dark chocolate version and it’s pretty good!

Nic - I’ve tried a couple of Limited Editions so far this year (variations on Take 5) and I’ve been pretty disappointed.

Jenn - glad to hear that I’m not nuts and overly sensitive to the smell.

Lesley -  I didn’t want to say anything when you left the comment but I’d already had the bad experience with the first bar! I wanted to give it another chance.

Julilla - I can never seem to keep from crunching them!

Kirsten - that’s so funny! Maybe that’s why you liked it better than I did, because it DIDN’T taste like malt!

  8. I feel bad for you Cybele, you must have already reviewed about 5 different candies with promises of malty goodness only to be disappointed. Maybe malt is too good to mingle with other candy types. (PS, I too ate Ovaltine straight as a child)

  9. strange, i love kit kats and i love malt, and i found the milkshake kit kat to be pretty darn tasty.  i bought a bunch of them at target and all of my friends also seemed to like it!

  10. hey sugar, my posting on them wasn’t favorable at all (i believe i used the words “dusty” and “ick”). like julilla, i’m a big fan of malt; but there’s no “malt” listed in the ingredients (and like karen, i can’t stand the extra creamy either)

Comment by tg on 3/28/06 at 12:55 pm #
  11. Kirsten - I had the same reaction! I usually dislike malt (I like malt balls, but that’s about it), but I loved this KitKat.

Cybele - We’ve gotten them at Target (not sure which one) and the Savon in Westwood (where they were on sale 3 for $1).

  12. Have you tried the Cherry KitKat?

I know you don’t like cherry-flavored candy. I happen to love it—cherry Jolly Ranchers, cherry Starburst, cherry Laffy Taffy. Hands down, my favorite flavor. That said, the Cherry KitKat came very close to ipecac-levels of disgusting.

I actually think you should try to review it, if only for the need to create a negative side to the rating scale.

  13. I tried these too awhile back and I didn’t think they were anything special.  I thought it tasted like a milder regular Kit Kat.

  14. I bought some at the Target on Sepulveda out in the valley (I guess that’s Ventura?). Was nearly physically ill from the smell of them. I got through the first pack but could smell the malty smell from the wrapper the whole way home. Deeeeeeesgusting.

Grace, as she said, liked them. More power to her, I say, but keep ‘em away from me.

Dashrashi - I’ve had the cherry kit kats and wish I could get more. I’m only sorry it was a limited edition flavour.

  15. i had the cherry kit kat for valentine’s day and i absolutely hated it—reminded me too much of nyquil.  it’s the only kit kat i’ve tried that i absolutely would never eat again.

  16. That LOOKS so good.  Sorry to hear about the mustiness, tho.

  17. Well… I wouldn’t dream that there’s soooo many different types/flavors of Kit Kat’s. In Lisbon we only have the “regular” one.
I like them a lot and is ok for me if this one is so bad as all of you say… arght!
Cybele, I can never understand is this thing of “limited edition”, concerning food…
I can understand it for fine wines but I always stop in the supermarket looking at limited editions of apple juice, or lemon ice-scream, for example, hehehehe.
Is some kind of market testing? Sorry my ignorance.
    Cheers!

  18. fada*do*lar - Sometimes it’s market testing, or sometimes it’s just a way to boost sales on a product that’s slumping. They didn’t used to do it that much here in the US, but now it’s all the rage to bring out new flavors of soda (they just ditched Vanilla Coke and replaced it with Black Cherry Vanilla Coke, for instance) or new twists on classic candy bars. Once in a great while the limited edition will become a permanent feature, but usually they don’t.

It’s even more common in Japan, where it’s not just old products given new twists, but entirely new products are brought out for a short time and then disappear. It’s such a pain when you find something you really like and then it’s not there anymore. :(

  19. damn, i was all set to go look for this one, but that’s sad to hear it tasted pretty bad.. I actually just picked up the orange cream kit kat and the mint one(?) at the dollar tree and both were great. I guess if i see the milkshake one on sale there i might pick it up just to see how bad it is.

tg - my mistake. See, I eat malt powder straight from the jar, so dusty isn’t a condemnation in my book!

Ace - I really should stop looking for anything to possibly rival the plain old chocolate malt ball - it’s pure perfection and I should just be happy.

Grace - I looked at a bunch of Targets (SM & LaBrea, Eagle Rock and Carson) but never found them there. I did however, find an empty display box at RiteAid before I found these at Dollar Tree.

Bruce - now that I’ve heard that I’m not alone in being put off by the smell, I don’t think I’m going to give them another try.

fada - Grace pretty much summed it up, it’s all a marketing ploy. Either you’re going to love the new product and become obsessed by stockpiling it, or it’s going to make you love the original more and go out and try it as a comparison. Clever!

Bryan - it seems that there’s no way that everyone is gonna love it or hate it, so if you’re gonna try it, make sure it’s cheap! I’m glad I didn’t buy it at the 7-11 and pay 85 cents for it.

  21. Thank you Grace and Cybele for your words.
Well, marketing can be a very tricky thing… About 2 years ago we had in Portugal a big campaign for “limited edition” of a very famous ice-cream we had when we were kids. Of course it was a success and everyone was eating a vintage collection iten, hehehehe.
The “clever” thing was: this ice cream costed twice the normal price…
The “stupid” thing is: if is was still in production as a “normal” ice scream, everyone would buy it, always! cheese

  22. i thought it was great, i wish they werrnt limited edition im only in my teens but i kno a good candybar when i eat 1 and the milkshake bar is great uuuummmm im craving one now!!!!!!

  23. Hersheys should be ashamed of this candy bar. It’s absolutely awful! The smell was nasty and it tasted more like mocha(which I hate) I ate 1 stick and gave the rest to my boys. One liked it, the other no. I’d have to say that if you enjoy coffee/mocha than this would be a good choice for you. I’ll pass.

  24. Good grief…i didn’t want to buy one myself after reading your review so i convinced my friend to buy one and share it (how evil of me…).
    two words:
    NEVER AGAIN.
it was like they packed malted dust into the bar. The bar itself was pretty, but it smelled really weird and the taste…ick.
Suzanne: i’m a coffee-flavored stuff addict and i have to say that i hate it. hate, hate, hate.

  25. Heh, I totally agree, I have a small collection of my own going also and with all the candy I have eaten that wasn’t spoiled this was the worst thing I have ever eaten! I also have tried the mocha flavored one-which is also “off”- but it wasn’t as bad as this, al though it did smell really weird…
