Dove Truffle and Snickers Eggs

I tried to stop buying and posting about Easter candy, but there’s just too much out there. So you can expect more Easter sweets for the next month or so. I picked up two more eggs, both made by Mars but vastly different. The Snickers Egg and the Dove Milk Chocolate Truffle Egg (I looked for a dark chocolate version but didn’t see them).

The Snickers Egg is exactly what you’d think it would be. It’s the familiar Snickers bar, which is a peanut nougat topped with caramel and peanuts and covered in chocolate. They come in a variety of colors of foil wrapping, each with a different sunglass-wearing rabbit on the front. The only real difference between this and a regular Snickers bar, besides the shape is that this is molded chocolate, not enrobed. I know it’s a tiny difference, but in general I prefer enrobing to molding for filled chocolates.

I happen to like Snickers quite a bit, though I don’t buy them very often. This little egg was exceptionally fresh, the peanuts were crunchy, the caramel salty and the chocolate very sweet. Everything was very soft, for some reason I’m used to my Snickers being a little more firm. I suppose the best suggestion for these would be to stick them in the freezer.

Dove Eggs and Snickers eggs happen to be made by the same company, Mars. Oddly enough, they also have the same design on their chocolate shells. They’re not exactly the same size, the Snickers is more like a half an egg, the Dove is less than that.

The Dove Milk Chocolate Truffle Egg is quite a little indulgence. The dark purple foil gives it a rich appearance that the contents fully deliver on. It’s milk chocolate, through and through. The milk chocolate shell is smooth and creamy and very sweet and the filling is buttery and dense. Milk chocolate truffles just aren’t my thing, but if you dig Dove milk chocolate truffles, definitely pick a few of these up, they’re really indulgent. I’m going to keep my eye out for dark versions. According to the ingredients label the filling is just milk chocolate and coconut oil.

  1. I’ve had the Snickers Chocolate Egg before, and it was super excellent!  I wonder what they do with all the unsold specialty brand candy at the end of Easter… sell it to the Dollar stores where people like me pick them up? =)

  2. I love the Snickers eggs. I prefer the slightly softer consistency to normal snickers.  And usually I don’t want a whole bar and the half egg is just the right size.  I’mn also a huge fan of the dark chocolate Dove truffle eggs.

Also, some friends and I got our tickets and we’re off to Toronto in May for the Sweets Expo. Woohoo!

Bryan - I know I saw some Milky Way ones at the Dollar store when I was there last! You may not have to wait until after the season.

G - you’re absolutely right about the portion size. A regular Snickers is just too big for me (mostly because I want variety and want a little something else in addition to a candy bar but don’t want to break the calorie bank).

I’ll be eager to hear about the Sweets Expo!

  4. I haven’t had the Snickers eggs, but I love their nutcrackers at Christmas. They’re really fresh, too. I like normal Snickers quite a bit as well (probably one of my favorite candy bars), but the nutcracker ones always taste a little better.

Last night I saw Cadbury truffle filled bunnies. I’d never seen them before and was tempted to get them, but ended up not. Have you ever had them?

  5. I know that at Target and a lot of big retailers after any big holiday candy season they usually know off 50% of the price.

  6. I’m surprised that Cadbury hasn’t gone after Dove yet for their packaging; I know they went after Young’s Double Chocolate Stout (and lost—perhaps that’s why) for using purple in a chocolate product. The Dove packaging does look an awful lot like Cadbury with the yellow, though…

Grace - I haven’t had the Cadbury truffles yet ... basically I’m waiting for what Jamie mentioned, the big after holiday sale.

Cupcake - that’s interesting! I didn’t notice the packaging similarities until you mentioned it. I will admit to some confusion spotting my favorite candies during these holiday seasons because they abandon all their usual branding colors and styles in favor of the unified “Easter Pastels.”

  8. i really hate candy or foods made to look like other foods. the chocolate eggs are always a bit tempting, esp. one promising truffle but for some reason the concept always grosses me out.

  9. i love the snickers holiday candies!  i like how the caramel is smooth & creamy (like snickers ice cream bars), whereas with the regular snickers it is not.  my favorite!

  10. I can’t seem to find regular Snicker’s Eggs at the store this year. Only an odd version of the original called a Snickers Creme Sports Egg. They aren’t nearly as good.

  12. Good Morning/Evening Ladies and Gents,

It seems a while since anyone has placed a Blog entry here but let me use this as a place to err my frustrations.  I, too, loved every holiday when the snickers eggs, hearts, toy soldiers, etc. would come out repective to each holiday.  They have seemed to replace those WONDERFUL delicacies with some poor excuse of a piece of candy entitled Creme Eggs, Creme Toy Soldiers, Creme Hearts, etc.  On exactly what planet does this appeal to the candy comsuming market?  It does not even come close to a snickers much less delicious candy.  I miss the old ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, now, down off my soap box.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  13. I can’t find the snickers eggs either, and they are my all time favorite.  The caramel is slightly softer and they are so fresh. Do not be fooled by the snickers creme sports eggs.  They are not even CLOSE to the same thing, and such a disappointment. I hope they don’t discontinue the snickers eggs!

  15. I keep seeing listings at drug stores for Snickers Creme Eggs this year.  Are they the same thing?  The pictures online look like they may not have nuts… Have you tried them??
