Cadbury Orange Creme Eggs

Last year I tried the first expansion in the Cadbury Creme Egg line, the Cadbury Caramel Egg. That one made perfect sense, as Cadbury is known far and wide for their Caramello bar. This year they’ve introduced the Cadbury Orange Creme Egg.

image

The egg looks the same on the outside, with its classic egg shape and simple star design on the shell. It smells like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Sweet and a little orangy ... but nothing like chocolate.

imageI was pretty pleased how it looked when I opened it. Both of the eggs I bought had some leakage/gap issues. The one pictured here had a small cavity that made a little portion of the fondant more crumbly than smooth and flowing (you can see it on the larger part of the egg to the left of the yolk. The second egg had a leak in it and was pasted to the foil. I was very careful when picking my eggs at the store, I got them out of the still full display box towards the back of the shelf instead of the one at the edge of the shelf and I made sure the package wasn’t at all sticky or bumpy.

The chocolate is ordinary American Cadbury milk chocolate. A little milky tasting (like powdered milk), very sweet and with a slight grain. The interior looked like the Cadbury Creme Egg is supposed to look in the center - a bright white fondant with a yellow yolk. The fondant has a pleasant light orange taste to it, a little like a Creamsicle - all sweetness and no tang but lacking the zestier elements that orange oils can bring.

Overall, this was more to my liking than the regular Cadbury Creme Egg, but I don’t see myself buying and eating these again. I’m curious to hear what the CCE fans have to say about it though.

See SugarHog.net’s take on the egg as well, she’s a bigger fan than I of the CCEs as a whole.

  3. I remember the chocolate creme version and they were tasty.  Haven’t seen these orange ones around though.  I am thoroughly disappointed in the candy selection in my neck of the woods these days.

  4. So…wait…..the orange flavoring isn’t in the chocolate? *is so confused*

  5. I’m glad for those of you who like Cadbury Eggs, these sound good.  I just can’t eat them.  They make my throat hurt and I’ve no idea how anyone can eat a whole one.  And I’m a sugarholic!  Maybe if they made little ones, I’d like them better.

  6. i’m with julilla; the regular creme eggs are way too sweet.  cadbury make a smaller version that are slightly more edible!  the orange flavor sounds interesting.

  7. I just bought two of these today for my parents, and I’m looking forward to hearing what they think of them. I miss the chocolate creme ones madly; they were the only Cadbury creme eggs I truly liked, since I find the caramel and original sickeningly sweet.

  8. I bought one of these last week for Grace and we agreed that it was delicious. I wish the CVS by my office wasn’t stuck permanently in the “suck” position, because they never have ANYthing interesting. I had to buy the egg for $1 (!) from a little upscale gift shop which just opened in our building.

I don’t really care for the plain creme eggs, but I’d buy these again if I could get them for less.

  9. As one of the pro-CCE contingent, I put in my vote as thumbs down on the orange version. I tend to like orange and chocolate but this didn’t work for me. I think it is because the egg is too different than the original.

  10. Im a creme egg fan (I prefer the mini caramel ones to the larger ones though) and I have to say I really liked the orange creme egg.  I don’t really like the chocolate in any of the creme eggs unless eaten with the fondant—if you bite the tip off the egg and only get chocolate its kinda gross, but the fondant covers up the grossness. of course, I can only eat one without hitting a sugar coma, but still, they’re a yummy treat

  11. Walgreen’s had these 2 for $1 this week, so I bought 2 (having seen them mentioned here in the past few weeks). I was not impressed. I am not a CCE fan, but I’m a big fan of orange+chocolate, and I just wasn’t getting enough orange in this, and I was overwhelmed by the sweetness of the ceme filling. But it did look like a real egg, with that yolk-ness going for it.

While at Walgreen’s, I also picked up a “raspberry creme” filled dark chocolate rabbit - also Cadbury, if I’m remembering correctly. The filling was more like jelly than creme, and overwhelmingly reminiscent of something I couldn’t quite place - lifesavers, maybe? Have you seen or tried them?

Tricia - I checked Walgreens in my hood and they didn’t have the orange ones. Or maybe they were out. I did get a Cadbury Raspberry Rabbit tho!

mel - I really need to get a hold of those mini caramel ones. I have a feeling I’d like them.

Tripp - thanks for weighing in. It’s kind of curious how many anti-CCE are liking the orange and the fans aren’t.

Wine Maker’s Wife - welcome, I hope you stop by again!

Susan & Sara - I missed the chocolate creme version entirely!

g - there’s still a month to go before Easter. Maybe they’re waiting for St. Patricks day to be over.

Sera - the flavor is definitely in the filling, not in the shell (like real eggs).

Julilla & anne - I think I’d like the minis better too, I really have to plunk down the $2 and at least try the caramel ones.

Bruce - as we get closer to the holiday keep your eye on CVS & Walgreens - I have a feeling you’ll find a weekend where they’re 2 for a dollar.

  13. I haven’t seen the orange ones yet either in Wis., but my daughter is picking me up one from IL. I oo find the original too sweet and for me, that’s almost imposible…however I love the caramel ones although a bit much for one.The chocolate ones were divine. Maybe it is time to start a letter campaign to have them reintroduced. Hersheys here we come!

  14. I couldn’t stand the caramel ones myself, but I’m not a big fan of caramel. smile The orange ones are GREAT.

Cybele, I snagged your picture for a post of my own (http://regen2.wordpress.com/2007/03/26/cadbury-orange-creme-eggs-really-yummy-stuff/); if you would prefer me take it down, let me know and I can.

Mark - that’s pretty funny! Maybe he would have done better if he had them in a little basket. I’m not sure I’d take a foil wrapped sweet from someone’s warm hands either. (I liked it when he threw it at that guy though.)

  20. I admit it, I’m a bit of a creme egg junkie (which explains why I’ve taken to googling the sweet little orbs, since I’m otherwise unable to obtain my fix in the real world).

At any rate, I found two of the orange creme eggs at a little out of the way gas station yesterday—the only two left, in fact. I wasn’t even aware that such things existed, but I scrounged enough change to buy one and was actually quite pleasantly surprised.

It reminded me of the usual fondant creme egg center, but with a touch of grand marnier flavoring (how sophisticated!). Nothing beats the original, but the orange is surprisingly good.

Now can anyone tell me where to order a case in these dreary post-Easter days?

  21. OMG I so fell in love with these orange creme ones when my hubby found them after Christmas.  They really are better frozen or out of the frig.  They are a bit less gooey and don’t drip down your hand then.  I have always craved the eggs after Easter and loved it when they came out with the “Ornament Egg” this past holiday time.  I want to kind that raspberry one though.  Our Walgreen’s sells out of them regularly, so I try to get at least 6 to 10 at a time.

  22. I love chocolate and orange together and really enjoyed the CCE with orange.  they were true to a CCE but with a hint of orange.  I would definately eat them again.

Comment by lynne on 4/19/08 at 5:35 am #
  26. Target had a HUGE horde of these last year, and I’m hopeful they will again.  However, they didn’t seem to be selling well (except to me).  They were only being sold in the 3-packs.

These are my favorite CCE for sure.  I find the Orange to be fairly intense and both aromatic and flavorful.

I’m actively on the hunt for this year’s harvest since the regular CCEs are already out.

  29. I remember the ones with solid chocolate creme inside; those were my favorites. Are they still around? Haven’t seen any this year. I can’t stand even to LOOK at the white and yellow egg ones, they look disgusting. So unless they start making the orange ones all orange to look at, no.

  30. The orange cream eggs are fantastic. I don’t care for the original one, though I did like them as a kid.

At which point they were much bigger and fit in a regular egg cup. My best friend and I ate them with a spoon..seriously! (back in the 1970’s)

But these orangey ones are the bomb. I can almost forget its not UK chocolate and instead the waxier USA stuff. Best chocolate I have eaten in the US.

I found them in Kroger stores 2 boxes of 4 for $7!

  32. I have to give my vote to the orange cremes.  I absolutely love those things, they have a very strong orange flavor.  I am hoping to find some online since I can’t find them in my area this year (or last).

  33. I believe that the chocolate creme eggs replaced the orange ones a couple of years ago. While I enjoy the smooth dark chocolate filling of the chocolate ones, I really miss the orange creme eggs.

  34. I am dissapointed! I love the orange cream eggs. I have been to 3 local stores and none are carrying that flavor. I usually buy a lot since you can’t get them after Easter. What other store besides Walgreens sells them?

Ronda, it doesn’t look like they make them any longer. They were replaced by the chocolate version.

  36. Oh, is that what happened?  Evil Chocolate Eggs.  I don’t like them.  But I DID like the Orange ones and was wondering why I hadn’t been able to find any the past few years.  I found no information as to if they had been discontinued on any “official” site.

Comment by Ric Fule on 4/05/13 at 8:41 pm #
  37. I’d buy the whole “They were replaced by the chocolate version.” if it weren’t for the fact I haven’t seen the orange ones anywhere in years, and this year is the first year I’ve seen the chocolate ones in stores around me. :/
It’s really unfortunate, because those were my favourite!
I guess they don’t want my money.
