Cherry Cordial Creme Kisses

They’re back!

imageI know folks were clamoring for them, and now they’re back again. Limited Edition Cherry Cordial Creme Kisses were first offered last year as part of Hershey’s ever-expanding Kisses line. I’m not sure Hershey’s realized how popular they’d be, but folks really wanted them and Brian from Candy Addict even started a petition online which led to a column in the NYTimes magazine this summer.

After all that hullabaloo, Hershey’s has quietly brought them back. Again as a Limited Edition item. It’s a little unclear if they’re going to become a seasonal offering which would be kind of cool ... I’d suggest Valentine’s Day, but no one asked me.

After all this, I’d never tried them before. With good reason, they’re cherry flavored.

Here I am with two bags of them, so I’ve got to give it a go.

They’re dreadful. Truly, I find them disgusting. They’re beautifully made. A shiny milk chocolate shell containing a flowing fondant with a strong wild cherry flavor. The center actually isn’t that sweet, but the milk chocolate is, so there’s a little “too sweet throat tingling” going on. The cherry flavor is very strong and lasts a long time. I ate about eight of them last night, brushed my teeth, went to bed, got up, brushed my teeth and I can still taste that cherry flavor ... it must be like garlic and gets into your bloodstream or something.

Granted, one of the reasons I probably don’t like cherry is this medication they used to give kids to sedate them before surgery (I’ve had it twice) - it was bright pink and they’d bring it in a little paper cup and it smelled kind of appealing at first (that’s how they suckered me in, that and I hadn’t eaten in 12 hours) but once in the mouth it washed down my throat with a fire that made me distrust those nurses for the rest of that stay in the hospital and the next. It seriously made me think that I was on fire and of course anytime any of my hospital roommates were faced with drinking a similar cup I warned them of the consequences (much to the dismay of the nurses and orderlies ... it was a good thing I was in traction and couldn’t spread the word further afield).

All that said, you may find it hard to believe that I’m happy Hershey’s is making them and if you’re a fan you should start scouring the stores and pick them up. It’s great to see that perhaps public opinion shaped their decision to bring them back. They’re a little more expensive than the regular solid Kisses (they’re pretty complex to make and they’re dumping way more of that cherry flavor in there than I expected). So if you’re a fan, celebrate! If you don’t find them at stores there’s always eBay and of course, my source, CandyWarehouse.com.

  1. Oh man, I HATED these!! And I love cherry candy!

The whole fondant thing is just gross and WAY too sweet. I would have preferred bits of tart cherries mixed in with the chocolate…but then, they didn’t consult with me.  smile

  2. the only “filled” kisses i’ve sort of liked are the caramel ones (although the white chocolate caramel ones are WAYYYYYYYYYYY too sweet, even for me.)

i thought the cherry ones were at least interesting but not enough to try more than once.

i suggest mint ones, kinda like a junior mint, in kiss form

Comment by ruffy on 9/19/06 at 7:44 am #
  3. They DO make mint ones..or did..they were good too but the best are the toffee ones…
WOW…they should have kept those, soooo good and I’m not a huge chocolate fan so I need something else to keep me interested..lol

  4. I confess, I liked them - but only in small doses. They got way too sweet if I ate more than a couple. And I appreciate that you are looking out for your readers - happy that Hershey’s is making them for the folks who do like them!

  5. I like cherry, so I like these.  You’re right, though, they are very very sweet, so a few are enough for one session.  You feel about cherry like I feel about black liquorice, it reminds me so much of the horrible green liquid Nyquil that my dad make me take when I had a cold.  Even the smell of black liquorice makes me feel queasy.

  6. Ugh, I had some of these at a friend’s house last Christmas and they were indeed HORRIBLE.  I love artificial cherry flavor, be it in Starbursts or any other candy, but these were pretty darned nasty.  If you’re into the Cherry/chocolate thing but didn’t like this, try the Andes Cherry Cordials.  They’re pretty good.

  7. I’m totally with you on the repulsion to cherry-flavored candy, especially in chocolate.  So, I guess my question is - and I don’t mean to sound judgmental -but WHY (or should I say HOW) in the name G-D did you eat EIGHT of them?  Were you just trying to give them a fair shake?  Or were you participating in your own private Fear Factor competition?
    Just curious…

  8. I once took the last cherry cordial kiss from someone’s office candy bowl and they gave me the look of death.  I was oops!

Comment by claudia on 9/19/06 at 3:00 pm #
  9. I liked them, but I think I still have some left from last Christmas, so I guess I didn’t like them *too* much, and normally I love cherry cordial stuff.

  10. I’m not a big fan of chocolates with cherry-flavored fillings, which is the reason why I hate going through Whitman’s samplers without a map.

Comment by Marvo on 9/19/06 at 6:39 pm #
  11. I have been loving the flavor varieties of kisses, but I agree with you, cherry is not for me.  I generally dislike combinations of fruit and chocolate.  I LOVE the mint kisses that have come out the past two Christmases (please come again!), and the peanut butter filled kisses which seem to be around to stay for awhile are great.

  12. I make a cookie with these on top - the cookie is a like a shortbread - not too sweet (and rolled in crushed almonds), so it balances everything out.  Yum!

Lesley - yeah, I’ve never understood fondant ... except that it’s probably much cheaper than cherries or chocolate.

ruffy - mint filled ones would be excellent ... I’d want them with dark chocolate though.

Amy - I know there’s a minted chocolate one that they do for Christmas, but I don’t think I’ve seen a liquid mint center yet.

Tricia - yeah, I think it’s great they’re listening and a limited edition item is a good that they can balance it out by making it a limited edition so that maybe everyone get their favorit flavor sometimes.

Julilla - why did the medical industry ruin so much candy for people? I guess that’s one more reason that everyone should try to stay healthy.

Alex - I gave some to someone last night and he called it a chocolate covered gooey Sucrets.

Joanna - I was trying to take a good picture of them and getting it split open with the goo flowing out isn’t easy. I ate them instead of throwing them out because I didn’t feel like going into the kitchen to put them into the trash where I knew the dog couldn’t get them. See, I have very good reasons!

claudia - I always think it’s funny when people put out a candy dish and then get upset when you take their favorites.

Grace - yeah, whether or not things end up sitting around is a pretty good indication. I’ve found the same thing in reverse ... things I don’t think I like disappear ... so I must like them.

Marvo - I was so happy the invented the internet and so many site have the little maps there.

Julie - the milk chocolate mint kisses will be back, and a new variety called Candy Cane Kisses (but I’ll post more about those later).

April - that’s the perfect thing to do with them! They do okay in the oven?

  14. Oh, my Lord, these rich, gooey, decadent little delights are truly DELECTABLE! Really. SCRUMPTIOUS. My mother likes them too. I bought some last winter holiday season and it was all Mom and I could do not to lay waste to the whole bag at one sitting! They should be packaged in single-serving snack bags.

  15. Cybele - You pop the kisses on right after you pull them out of the oven - carry over heat welds them on. wink

  20. I am so happy when I eat these, I ate an entire bag of them in one sitting. I LOVE them so much I am addicted to them so much that before they disapeared into my family I took about 10 of them and stashed them inside my jewelry box.

  21. Um I wish I found this review earlier! I just had one and I think i threw up a bit in my mouth. I can’t be sure because that is exactly what the cherry cordial kiss tasted like. I am dissapointed because I have an obsession with the expresso and coconut creme flavors. booo!

  22. Well, I just HAD to be the odd one out here I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE THINGS more than just about any candy I can think of right now!  Im a Sweets Addict and these are the best Ive had.  I dont know why, but I love these and can make myself literaly sick on them. I have to stop myself from eating the whole bag every time!  I think its because I love chocolate covered cheeries, but I eat only the chocolate and filling and throw out the cherry. So… I wish Hershey would make them full time, but then I would NEVER get rid of that extra 10 pounds I put on during the Holidays when I was eating them full time!  Maybe its safer if they dont, but Im still looking for a source to find them when I DO want them!

  23. I just found Special Dark cherry cordial kisses. Such an improvement. Although I kinda liked the milk choco version, they were waaaay too sweet. These are quite nice - the dark choco balances out the creme center.

  24. I am so crazy about these kisses. The milk chocolate is better then the dark to me.  If it’s a hershey kiss, I’ll at least try them all. I would love to work as a tester for them! Yumm

  25. Just tried some today.  I don’t know what you’re talking about.  I loved them!  The flavor didn’t last in my mouth for hours either.

  26. OH MY GOD
Wait… you’re kidding, right? These are my favorite candy!! Er… second favorite, after Harry & David chocolate blueberries.

  27. Love them!  First time I tried them, I, too, couldn’t imagine eating more than one at a time because of the sweetness.  I got over that feeling very, very quickly!

What I’d like to know is where to find the marshmallow creme Kisses—I saw them once and cannot find them again.

  28. Yeech, i hated these too, and i usually LOVE cherry cordials.

  29. yarina - me too! then i went back, stocked up and put them in the freezer… i love frozen chocolate and it helps slow me down!

i love these!  they’re the only flavor in front of mint and hot chocolate :3

  30. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion of taste ... however, I’m rather shocked to find that anyone does not like these kisses. I am not a kiss fan .... they are usually one chocolate I can pass up unless I’m craving chocolate in a mad way and they are the only chocolate around. HOWEVER, I bought them for a secret santa gift .... and decided to try one .... well, they were so good that I went back to the store and bought something else as a gift and bought TWO MORE bags. They are absolutely decatant! They have almost an addicting taste .... I really just cannot get enough! They are sweet - yet not TOO sweet. Like some chocolate covered cherries are really STRONGLY SWEET ... but these are JUST RIGHT! I will probrobly buy a handful of bags and then go back and get a few more the day after Christmas ... while they are half price! So, if you are iffy and haven’t tried them ... they ar well worth a try. If you don’t like them ... I’m sure someone will take them off your hands for you! They are amazing!

  31. The first time I had just one of these kisses from an office candy bowl the first thing that came to mind after the cherry filling started coming out was, this stuff tastes like medicine!! But a few days later I found myself walking past the candy bowl again and gave the little cherry creme filled delights another go, not so bad a second time around I thought, but still not the greatest Hershey kiss I’ve had. These cherry kisses are ok in taste once you get use to them.

  32. someone left two on my desk at work, i thought to myself this might be pretty good. WOW, SOME NASTY KISSES! i so love Hershey chocolate especially kisses ,but these were so gross. I had to spit it out. Awful after taste, kinda like medicine and plastic. YUCK. these get a thumbs down

  33. There’s a great recipe on the bag something like the peanut butter blossoms but using brownie mix.  I made them last weekend and everyone who likes chocolate covered cherries loved them.  I don’t particularly like chocolate covered cherries so I didn’t eat any.  Even my 17 year old like them, they were the first type of cookie we made that all were eaten.  So, I think it’s a matter of taste.  Some folks like liver too and that’s disgusting!

Comment by jeanne on 12/17/10 at 2:50 pm #
  34. The have some out this year that have a liquid cherry flavored center, SO much more yummy than the creme center. Also, if you like chocolate covered cherries, Cellas liquid centered are THE only cherries to eat, you’ll never eat the creme centered cherries again after you have Cellas!

  35. I love love love these!  Did I say I love these!  I only wish is that they made them year round. I will have a dozen or so bags of these in My freezer to carry me over to the next holiday.

  36. I love these as well!  I actually hate real chocolate covered cherries, and I’m not a big fan of cherry flavor in the first place, but these I love.  I’m a big fan of sickeningly sweet stuff though, my sweet tooth is loud and proud!  I have been known to eat over half a bag of these.  My mom used them in our stockings one Christmas, and I found out that she had an extra bag stashed as well.  She and I polished it off in one sitting.

  37. My aunts friend got me a bag, I ate these cherry kisses that night she went out got 2 more bags and three of us ate these, I had to go back for three more bags, I went home bought 4 bags, if I had of know these were just for Christmas, IDE stocked up, wish I could get more

  38. These cherry cordial kisses are the bomb!!!!!!!  I love them and wish I had easy access to them year round.  I always have a few stashed away for all the other months when they are not readily available.  Tell me how I can get more without paying outrageous prices.

Comment by Wanda on 1/31/16 at 1:09 pm #
  39. Is it just me or are these different (worse) this year? I’ll be OK if you tell me they are the same and I am different. Perhaps I’m coming down with a cold or something. Dunno.
I do know that I love, love, LOVE these and no one else in my family does. That means I get them all to myself. But this year, I do not love them.

Comment by FlipBumWalla on 12/09/16 at 6:46 am #
  40. I would like them much better if made with dark chocolate.
