Skittles Ice Cream

Skittles has come out with quite a few new flavor varieties, so many that I haven’t been keeping track. I love the Originals, they’re one of the most perfect candies ever. I rather liked the Mint mix, but I was kind of peeved that they put it in that plastic box packaging, why couldn’t I just buy them in a little packet like the fruit ones? However, I’m not keen on the Tropical or Sours and there are other varieties like the Smoothies and Berry Mix that I haven’t even tried yet. But these caught my eye.

The Limited Edition Ice Cream goes places I hadn’t expected, it leaves the fruit realm. The flavor mix goes like this: Caramel Ripple, Chocolate, Vanilla, Orange Vanilla Swirl and Strawberry. Sounds kind of promising. I’ve often wondered what a chocolate Skittle would taste like.

The colors are fun and completely evocative of ice cream. A little subdued and earthy but still a pretty combination. The package smells like cotton candy.

Unfortunately the taste wasn’t all that I’d hoped. They all have a slightly cardboard flavor to them; they seem as intense as the fruit Skittles.

Orange Vanilla Swirl was one of my favorites. Like a creamsicle, it was like an orange Skittle but without the tangy bite to it, so it was just smooth and mellow with a nice orange essence.

Strawberry was also pleasant, like strawberry ice cream usually is. A creamier version of the strawberry fruit Skittle, as an ice cream flavor it also didn’t have the sour bite to it but a nice vanilla overtone.

Caramel Ripple was interesting, I’m not sure where the rippling is, but it had a rather overt caramel “flavor” to it instead of actually being caramelized.

Vanilla was just plain sweet and chewy, which isn’t surprising and completely pleasant. The vanilla also tastes like a “flavor” and not really organic, but a really fun change of pace from the tart fruit Skittles.

Chocolate was just the worst one in the bunch. If you’re fond of Tootsie Rolls you’ll recognize these as a teensy bite of that similar watery cocoa flavor. They were just plain bland and musty tasting without any creaminess. It’s like giving someone chocolate sorbet in hopes that they’ll think it’s ice cream - there’s nothing wrong with chocolate sorbet, but the only thing that gives it any resemblance to ice cream is the fact that it’s frozen.

I’m kind of mixed on this flavor variation. I don’t think it’s something I’d buy again, but I appreciate the attempt at making a version of Skittles that aren’t tart. All the flavors go together well, so you can combine any flavors in the pack without coming up with something offensive, so it’s well thought out.

If you haven’t already seen it, check out the Advertising section on the Skittle site for their extra-creepy commercial campaign which rivals the Burger King Pantomime King ones (check out The Beard especially).

  1. That is a bit disappointing.  They sound very promising. I may still have to try some for myself if I can ever locate any.  Although I do like tootsie rolls (so long as I know it’s a tootsie roll and am not expecting real chocolate) so maybe I’d be okay with them.

Hmmm, what would an Intense cardboard flavor be like? :^)

I’ve never seen this product. From the title, I was expecting something else - ice cream with skittles in it! Having had pudding with starburst in it a few weeks ago (I made “mock” pot pies for April Fool’s day - the veggies were styled from starburst, and the beef was chunks of chocolate), I was expecting to read about a clash of textures.

  6. I think the chocolate is perfect, but then, I like Tootsie Rolls.  I like the Smoothie Mix and Spearmint Mix, too, but these are certainly the best Skittles I?ve had ... though I don?t think I would want them all the time.  I do recommend people give these a chance, though ? they weren?t what I expected and will probably surprise others too.

  7. I just saw these last night at 7-11 and I have to say I’m becoming a sucker for limited edition candies such as the different kinds of Skittles.

So I plunked down $.85 for the skittles (hey this *was* 7-11, pricey candy).

My verdict: Vanilla, Orange Vinalla and Strawberry are good. I totally agree that Chocolate tastes vaguely like Toostie Rolls but I can’t stand Carmel ripple. It reminded me of Jelly Belly “Graham cracker” flavor.

I like Skittles smoothie mix but I won’t be buying Ice Cream flavors again.

  8. Glad you reviewed these!  I don’t eat much candy ever anymore… and was intrigued.  Seeing how I have an obsession with ice cream right now!  I think I will live vicariously through this review smile

  10. I finally had the chance to try them, and I think you are right on with the Tootsie Roll comparison.  Its the first thing I thought when I bit into it.  I also concur that the Vanilla ones tasted like “flavor” though I responded more negatively to that than you.

I’d also say that the color mix was, well, uninspiring by accurate.  There is definitely no rainbow to taste here, but the colors pair well together and are generally pleasing if rather drab.

Overall, the taste was, dare I say, too sweet.  Coming from me, that is quite a statement.  While I didn’t dislike them, but the time I was done with the bag I had my fill and won’t be getting them again.

  11. For something that smells good like cotton candy, I was expecting at least a similar taste also.  I wasn?t expecting the strawberry to taste well since I don?t really like strawberry that much.  The chocolate, was wrong on so many levels; I basically thought that the chocolate would taste close to chocolate pudding or chocolate resins. It never fails most times, when something is good stick to it and don?t change.

  13. I have been finding these at every 7-11 in Arlington, Texas. I am an not a fan of skittles, for they are too tart for my Ice cream tastes.
I tried these and was immediatly hooked on the Orange.
I realy liked the Caramel, and i found the strawberry to be mildly amusing as a cotten candy like flavor.
I reserve the right to be non-commital about the Vanilla, for i never really understood Vanilla any way.
The Chocolate was the flavor of a tootsie roll that had warmed and cooled repeatedly by leaving it in an old car for several years!
all in all this was the first pack of skitttles that i actually enjoyed, but they need to try again on the Chocolate!

  14. I have looked all around oklahoma city, and the ice cream flavored skittles are being snapped up as fast as they put out new ones.  I have yet to try them, but will do so as soon as I find some.  I will be really disappointed if the chocolate tastes like old tootsie rolls .... anyway, I can hardly wait to try some.

  19. I have to say that “watery cocoa” is the best description of Tootsie Rolls I’ve ever seen! As for these Skittles, they don’t sound the least bit appetizing to me I just had to comment on the T.R. thing…

  22. I really enjoyed the Ice Cream Flavored Skittles.
I also wish they would bring them back.  I enjoyed the ice cream much more than the recent Carnival Skittles.

Ryan - this post was from April of 2006 ... I still see the candies in the 99 Cent Only and Dollar Tree stores, so you might want to check a discounter.

  26. Once I tasted these sweet little beauties my life changed forever.

I am now completely unable to enjoy any foods which aren’t artifically flavored to taste like the idea of ice cream.

    Buyer beware.

  27. I think they should change the name of the Orange Vanilla Swirl to Orange creamsicle.

  28. I wonder what these would taste like….?

I had a good idea on they should make Cookie skittles. They could have chocolate chip, vanilla, rainbow chip, ummm, triple chocolate. They would be good, ( if they do not mess up like they did on the chocolate ones)
