The surprise breakout hit of the candy party. I call it a suprise because when doing my little photoshoot, I sampled most of the candy for the party (I took it out of the package and figured I may as well have something to snack on while shooting) and found this to be so foul that I threw it out after a few licks.
Billed as a chile flavored lolly, this amply sized ball has four layers (alternating red and then green), the outside is textured (reminded me of stucco) with what I guess to be chili power. The thing is, I don’t mind spicy candy, it’s salty candy that baffles me, and this was damn salty.
However I felt about it, Will and Amy seemed sufficiently engaged by the candy to rate it about a five (they’d eat one if someone gave it to them, in fact, they took the extras home with them), but Robin seemed only to tolerate it enough to get to a second layer.
My rating: 2 out of 10.
wow your first 2 out of 10 thank god. I thought you would eat just about any kind of candy or chocolate.
I confess, I brought the Rockaleta you gave me to work and after several days finally went at it. Let’s just say the honeymoon was over as the sophomore experience totaled about four licks before I pitched the thing. 2 outta 10 is about right.
Horrible aren’t they? I was given one of these…things once by my Spanish teacher. It was a nice gesture but all the same, yeesh.
I gotta say I love Rockaletas. Especially the new dark ones. Sure it’s an aquired taste but I really wouldn’t describe them as salty. It’s a straight up chile flavor. You might appreciate the Dark ones better since they are more of a spicy/sweet flavor rather than just a chile flavor.
Hi! Actually, rockaleta’s aren’t horrible.. it’s just that you are nnot used to them! I don’t just love them, but I think they’re some of the best candies… not only caramel but some spicy and some gum also!
im eating one right now
and i love em
dont hate
I don’t consider it ‘hating’ to dislike something (refusing to give something a ten just because it’s white chocolate is a different story, but this blog is so great I kind of dismissed that.) I think spice is great, but I avoid spicy candy like the plague. Somewhere between cayenne pepper sauce and citric-acid covered candies (coughWARHEADScoughcough) I gave myself two ulcers. The last thing I need is MORE flavor addictions.
(PS: I agree that salty candy is odd. Saltwater taffy rules, but it isn’t SALTY.)
Another famous candy in M?xico. I think they are great, as one said before me, they have chile, candy and gum in the center. I don’t consider them salty neither spicy, and they have a very nice chile flavor. I guess they do are an aquired taste. The thing I don’t like about the dark ones, is that they paint your tongue blue, but they do have a more spicy but sweet flavor.
I love these. I was first given one by a classmate and then found myself getting the tiny ones (The Rockaleta shoks).
The lolly pop part is a bit tangy but mostly sweet and you can bite it away to the gum if you are impatient like most kids tend to be.
The gum is very sweet but the problem I had was that it went hard fast. Once the flavor was gone the gum was hard. This happens with the suckers as well. V_v
My favorite part is the gum but the hard candy part comes very close to being just as good.
Next time you don’t like the chili part soak it it hot water to get the gum, evaluate the gum and then post. ^_-
SIMPLY PUT I LOVE THEM, I ADMIT THE FIRST TWO I COULD NOT STAND!! NOW I AM HOOKED, AND I CANT FIND THEM NOWHERE IN THE STORES ANYMORE, SO I AM ONLINE TO BUY A CASE WHENEVER I CAN FIND A LOCATION TO BUY IT AT!! YES I ADMIT I AM ACTULLY HOOKED!! (OR ADDICTED!! LOL)
OMG I love this ones, my favorite!! =D (I’m Mexican of course, almost nobody else likes them apart from us hahaha)
I’m mexican…and I don’t like them…it gets boring after the first 5 min. or so….
the gum center is awful, it’s tasteless and hard.
I NED TO TELL U THEY TASE VERY NASTY!!!!!!!!............. N VERY AWFUL
WELL I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE ROCALETAS ARE VERY GOOD BUT SOME TIMES IT GETS BORRIN AND FOR THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT ARE NASTY AND COMMENT BAD ABOUT IT WELL WHY THEY EAT THEN..??AND FOR THE PEOPLE WHO SAYES THE ROCALETAS ARE GOOD WELL GOOD FOR THEM (I HOPE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE ROCALETAS COME UP WITH A DIFFERENT CANDY BUT GOOD)
i love rockaletas.. but i hafta agree i hate the gym part because it is tasteless and hard
My husband and I love rockaletas (he is mexican and I am white)! We think they are the best candy in the world! You can order them on candy crate.com! They will have more towards summer time. First time buyers won’t regret buying them! And they are NOT SALTY!! It is an aquired taste!
The problem with Rocka Leta is NOT the alternating red/green horrific/confusing eating experience, but that the memory of it fades in intensity so quickly. Less than two months after I’ve choked one down—the whole time cursing my own idiocy—I find myself considering giving them another go, and inevitably I end up torturing myself with another one. The gum is, in my opinion, Rocka Leta’s saving grace, because it stimulates your salivary glands and helps wash away any residual horror.
its alright… i give it 5 outta 10 its too sweet for my taste now if were gonna talk about GOOD mexican candy PICA FRESA and PICA GOMA. DAM THATS GOOD CANDY!! oh yeah and BOLITOCHAS but i dont think they make them by that name anymore…
this the best candy in the world they gave it a sikver award fir the best candy in the world i looooovvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeee it:)
just ate one how many layers are there its like theres 12 layers but there awsome I LOVE THEM!!!!!
Sooooo freakin good the best
I’m eating one right now, and just out of curiosity did a search and got to your site, great job.
For me, it’s only an occasional treat. It takes some time to be done with one, and the chili layers can abrade one’s palate. I’m in Mexico, and I think they’ve added even more layers. As of today, the wrap bears a sign that reads “Not labeled for US”.
hi i like rockaletas send me rockaletas to 5835 south fontana avenue tucson az.
I absolutely LOVE these! The way to enjoy them is to allow the layers to dissolve without chewing (but I never have the patience and I love the softish texture. But it’s like a whole taste experience, the top layer is hot and as you lick it gets to a soft sweet flavor , then some lemon starts kicking in, another layer of chili then ooops I have to bite at this point. Problem is the gum in the cneter is really nasty unless you chew it with the last layer. I think these things are BRILLIANT! My favorite treat when dieting because it’s such a flavorful experience. However, I am a fan of sweet and hot. Chili Rokas are great! And no, I’m not Mexican, I’m Norwegian.
I love that candy, is my favorite, the bad thing is that I can only eat one per day, or my tongue suffers
the first layer is rough so i had to bite through it but the green layer is sweet i am the fan of the candy
this is so stupid if you give this a 2 out of 10 then you must have got the American ones because the original Mexican ones are delicious . f*** off . 10 out of 10
Now, raul, we don’t go treating (pun) our sweet candy girls this way…given that, it’s true that candies and other yummy products will taste good or bad depending on the given country. I wonder wnhy the problem exists..over on the M&M/Reese Peanut butter egg entry that has the latest comments, there were complaints ofr rubbing alcohol in them..
