I know there are times when I’m thinking about the future of candy and I say to myself, “why can’t red vines be more like string cheese?”
Well, Twizzlers has answered the call of curiosity: What would happen if you made red licorice in the string cheese format?
First, it’d be pretty. That’s part of why I bought this, it was so cute. It looks like telephone cable! But it doesn’t taste like it. Second, it’d be interactive. The candy is basically red licorice laces twisted together and lightly fused into short ropes. There are three colors of the laces: red, orange and yellow.
This flavor is called Paradise Punch. I was hoping that each of the strands would be a different flavor, but it didn’t taste that way. They were all that typical red fruit punch flavor. What was rather overwhelming was the chemical taste, like plastic or some sort of volatile compound. The lingering chemical smell and taste just left a bad taste in my mouth. They were soft and chewy, just not tasty.
I tried taking it out of the package (in case it was the wrapper) and leaving it out for a while, but that didn’t seem to make the flavor dissipate. Which makes me wonder if that’s how it’s supposed to taste. I actually do love Twizzlers and maybe if I see the regular red flavor (or a Twizted red and black) I’ll give it another try. For now, I’ll have to pass on the chemical cocktail.
I have a bag of these too and while I didn’t have the same chemical tasting/smelling issues, I was quite disappointed that all the strands have the same (yes, benign) flavour (or lack thereof).
Wow, there are two Karens, this doesn’t often happen!
Anyway, Twizzlers and their various incarnations are a candy with a lot of potential—they’re so very fun to chew. And yet, the flavor is just so…lacking. In the event that they ever make a Twizzler that is actually tasty, I’m there. As they stand now, I’m not wasting money (or calories for that matter) on a candy that tastes and smells like plastic.
i bought a bag of these and had to give them away to coworkers. I couldn’t stomache the awful chemical aftertaste. I did however braid the 3 colors into a pretty bracelet that held up on my wrist all day.
I’ve had the red pull n peels that have been out for years and the chemical aftertaste is present but def much less strong.
Love your reviews! ESPECIALLY the non-chocolate ones! I’m linking people to your blog if that’s okay.
I haven’t tried these yet, but I have been avoiding pull and peel like the plague since it first came out. It had some weird flavor (not sure if it was supposed to be cherry or strawberry) that tasted like bad car air fresheners smell. And the other day, someone I work with came in with chocolate twizzlers. They were unusual, not very chocolate-y, but I thought they were decent.
You people are being too critical. I love Twizzlers Twizted Paradise, and no I don’t work for Hershey.
A lot of companies make a Tropical flavor of some sort, but it usually tastes aweful. I think Twizzler has produced the ideal Tropical flavor that you can’t find in any other brand. Yes, the candy does need some improvments, but overall the taste, texture, color, and chew-ability are all Great! I’ve noticed that this candy has been hard to find in the past month, stores like Wal-mart, Occo’s, CVS, ect., don’t carry this product, but do carry several other Twizzler products. Maybe Hershey has quit making the candy and is currently making imporvments to it….that would be Great.
If you can find this cany, its definately worth a try, I like it alot, and I’m not usually a candy eater.
I love Twizzlers! All flavors!
