Tic Tac Bold!

There’s nothing wrong with Tic Tacs. They’re a great mint. Smooth and soft on the tongue, with a complex taste that’s more than peppermint - it has a little hint of licorice or menthol or something that sets it apart from others. Tic Tacs don’t need to be mintier. They’re exceptionally durable too and I’ve eaten plenty found at the bottom of my purse and have a box of cinnamon Tic Tacs in my car that have been there for two and half years.

But Ferrero is a little behind the curve on the whole “extreme” thing and they went and introduced Bold! Tic Tacs this year. (Come on, how long have Altoids been popular?)

So here I am with a slightly different Tic Tac. Out of the little box they look exactly the same (in fact, that photo has one of each ... can you tell which is which?). The box, however, is a lovely cobalt blue and a little more streamlined. So it’s less stackable than before.

The mint itself doesn’t seem any different at first. You pop it in your mouth and it’s lightly sweet, lightly minty. Then it starts to grow. Really, it’s a pretty strong mint, strong enough to freshen your breath with just one. See! It’s like being a low calorie mint - half the calories satisfies!

I prefer the mellowness of the classic Tic Tacs and I hope they don’t stop making them. The Bold! line also includes a Fruit version, which I didn’t bring home, but I wanted to note that the candies in there are also white. Way to confuse people! Anyway, there’s a very nice timeline about Tic Tacs on the website (there are two versions ... look at the real one).

So, if I approach this product as if I’ve never seen a Tic Tac before, these are very good. Mellow, strong and the mint certainly lasts. The packaging is nice for dispensing and a recognizable color and shape.

This product was made in Ecuador.

(As a side note, does anyone else remember Dynamints? They were sold in a horizontal clear dispenser box and were pretty much the same as Tic Tacs. Here’s a photo and here’s a commercial from 1978. They were made by Dentyne.)

  1. Orange Tic-Tacs are the only kind I ever buy.

If I remember correctly, Dynamints weren’t as good as Tic-Tacs, either.

  2. I’m also an orange tic-tac person.  I usually prefer cinnamon stuff over mint stuff, but really didn’t like the cinnamon tic-tacs.

  3. My hubby LOVES antique orange tic-tacs.  He will let them sit for years until they develop a disturbing fuzziness.  (I think it’s just sugar sweat. I hope that’s all it is.)  For my money, nothing beats the original peppermint.

  4. I *hated* these.  The “mint” degenerates into something that tastes, to me, like a mix of green Nyquil and Hall’s Mentholyptus.  Blech.  I had to spit it out.  *ptooey!*

Comment by Julilla on 7/14/06 at 10:13 am #
  5. It’s a good thing you didn’t get the Fruit version - they are downright awful.  As in “can’t finish one” bad.  The Mint version is only slightly better, although I agree with #4 on that one as well.

I’m a fan of the new mints (Dentyne?  I wish I had some with me) that look like tic tacs with a little blue two-sided arrow on them.  They taste like the delicious outer coating of a Tic Tac, only all the way through.

  6. i got these at the candy expo too…do not like.  WAY too minty. the best thing about white tic tacs is the slight hint of vanilla. and these do not have it.  and the fruit ones are nasty.  if it ain’t broke…
omg dynamints.  haven’t thought about those since the 70s.

Comment by rachel b. on 7/14/06 at 12:23 pm #
  7. Don’t bother with the fruit variation. They’re not nasty, per se, but they aren’t pleasant, either. I ate about three, and tossed the pack. You get a big hit of really fake tutti frutti flavour which peters out after the outer layer of the candy is gone, and then it just tastes neutral with a hint of that same fake fruitiness. Add to that the saccharine bitterness of an artificial sweetener.

The orange tic-tacs, on the other hand, I could eat box after box and never grow tired of them.

Do they even make Dynamints anymore? Like Rachel, I haven’t thought of them in at least a decade.

  8. Oh, I loved dynamints!  That is a serious blast from the past.  Awesome stuff.

  9. Dynamints… WOW.  Haven’t thought about them in ages.  We used to take the sticker off the empty packet and pretend it was a tiny camera.  The opener at the top was the click for the shutter.

  10. I’m surprised they didn’t call it Tic Tac Xtreme!

Velvet - yeah, either that or Boldz!

g - I’m not sure cinnamon Tic Tacs are really cinnamon flavored - they’ve got some other notes in there, maybe a little clove and mint.

Dave - it’s weird, I was just looking at the orange ones at the store because I haven’t had them in years.

anne - okay, I think I found a pack like that just yesterday ... very odd, but probably not dangerous.

Julilla - hey, at least they’re kinda fun to spit out, like watermelon seeds!

John - it turns out I did have some Fruit Bold! in my stash ... and I’m glad I didn’t have to eat enough for a full review, you pretty much nailed it.

Bruce - I can’t find any record of dynamints still being made.

Grommie - that’s so cute! I used to use them as parts of walls in my legos.

William - I miss it when we don’t have a nearly identical choice ... dynamints and tic tacs ... coke and pepsi.

  14. I too am an orange tic tac lover. I tried the tic-tac Bold Fruit version thinking it might be an amped up version of the orange - I didn’t like it too much, tasted like a very tart “fake fruity” type candy with to long of an aftertaste. Goes to show you can’t touch the classic in this case.

  19. i’ve tried Bold! and i gotta admit, theyre good! But, they don’t freshen your breath, and i checked and i checked but found no copyright or trademark symbols. i have a feeling that “Bold!” is just a violation of copyright.

  20. I am looking for a large Tic Tac dispenser. It is big enough to hold pens or pencils. That is how I last saw it used. I have looked all over the internet without any luck. If anyone knows where I might find and purchase one of these, please email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). It would be greatly appreciated.

  21. IM A LITTLE DISGUSTED. I BOUGHT SOME TIC TAC BOLD FROM A RITE AID HERE IN PHILADELPHIA ON LEBANON AVENUE. IT IS THE FRUIT FLAVOR. I REALLY DIDNT LIKE THEM THEY TASTED FUNNY. SO I HELD ON THINKING IT WAS MY DRINK. SO TONIGHT MY KID SAYS SHE WANTS THEM. I GAVE THEM TO HER SHE SAID THEY ARE GROSS. I TOLD HER TO THROW THEM IN THE TRASH. SHE OPENED THEM TO EMPTY THEM OUT AND THERE IS A SMALL PIECE OF SOME TYPE OF PLASTIC INSIDE. SO I GET SOMETHING TO TAKE IT OUT, IT LOOKS LIKE THE END OF A BALLOON. I PRAY TO GOD ITS NOT A CONDOM. PEOPLE ARE GROSS. MY QUESTION IS .... ARE THERE SUPPOSED TO BE PLASTIC INSIDE THE BOXES? THE RITE AID IS CLOSED AS ITS 10 PM NOW.
IM A THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED BUT WILL BE CALLING ASAP

  23. My daughter loves orange tic tacs and now we can’t get them in any store at all, she’s blaming it on the movie Juno which was an awesome movie by the way, we both loved it, but since then in our city anyway, we can’t find them anywhere. It’s a shame, she misses them.

  26. The other day I was looking through the gas station for gum. Let me tell you it is now virtually impossible to find ANY gum that doesn’t have Aspartame in it. I can’t eat Aspartame, it makes me feel kind of headachey and weird. So I bought Bold Tic-Tacs instead, and they don’t use Aspartame. Maybe it’s that Aspartame isn’t available in Ecuador?

  27. I just visited http://www.tictacusa.com. According to their site, the offer the old school Tic Tac flavors. As well as Chill flavors, which I guess are milder than the Bold Tic Tacs.

  35. Found the blue BOLD tic tacs at thecandylandstore.com I ordered a pkg. of 24 online Friday night and paid for them by a credit card.  They shipped out on Saturday, and I received the package today (Monday)!!!!  How’s that for service?  The pkg. of 24 sells for $18.99 plus shipping at $6.03, total was $25.02 which brings each Tic Tac BOLD to $1.04 which is probably about what we’d pay for each at a store—IF we could find them.  If you Google BOLD tic tacs, you’ll get other sources, too, but I am very happy with thecandylandstore.com.  Good luck!!!!

Comment by Pat on 6/01/09 at 6:48 pm #
  36. Oops!  I paid for the BOLD by PayPal, not a credit card, so it was instant payment which probably helped in getting the Tic Tacs shipped so fast.  Just wanted to correct my previous message.
Also, I believe the regular Tic Tacs at our local Walmart are at $1.04 each.  Price keeps going up.  And I think the regular Tic Tacs at another discount place are at $.85 Since I can’t find the BOLD anywhere, I don’t mind paying $1.04 for a box from thecandylandstore.com.

  40. The orange tic tacs are amazing. I miss when they were orange, they are now white here in Canada. They got rid of my fave cinnamon ones in Canada as well. Also the green ones were turned white. The classic white are very tasty with a starting flavour of vanilla mint.

I remember years ago I found a HUGE tic tac box with BIG tic tacs.soooo good.
