Necco SmoothiesOh dreadful day, I’m gonna just relieve you of any curiosity about these. They’re just bad. Necco Smoothies are a new set of flavors of the good old fashioned Necco wafers. Smoothies, I’m guessing, are supposed to be fruit shake flavors. The package says: Blueberry, Banana Caramel, Tropical, Peach and Strawberry Creme. They smelled really bad. I don’t think they would smell bad individually, but as a group the combination of the sweet, artificial fruit scents was just nauseating. Like a set of cheap candles. The colors just weren’t doing it for me either. The chalky tablets looked more like antacids or perhaps some barrettes I had when I was in middle school. But I closed my eyes and went for the taste test: White = Tropical: What does that mean? I think it was supposed to be pina colada or something with coconut in it. It was mild and pleasant. Not overtly flavorful, but simply sweet. Yellow = Banana Caramel: Hey, this one’s pretty good, it reminds me of the long-lost Wacky Wafers. It’s not all banana, there’s a little hint of the caramelized sugar in there. Orange = Peach: I know I mention my feelings for cherry flavored things from time to time, and this means that I’ve neglected my detestment for all things peach flavored. Don’t get me wrong, I love peaches. I just don’t like peach flavored things. Blue = Blueberry: things flavored like blueberries never taste like blueberries. In fact, blueberries have very little flavor to me; they’re all about the texture. Sure, they’re sweet and tangy, but when you close your eyes and forget about what you’re eating, they taste kind of like iced tea. Maybe it’s the antioxidants or polyphenols or whatever in there that tea and blueberries have in common, but I’m happy to eat fresh blueberries but I don’t want blueberry flavored things. Pink = Strawberry Creme: The strawberry flavor is very strong and has a slight tang to it, like a yogurt. It wasn’t offensive or off balance like the peach, but it wasn’t really that pleasant either. The chalkiness of the candy itself and the attempt at a creme flavor just reek of insincerity. Now, I might be alone here in my estimation for these. Amy, my neighbor and co-worker seems to think that these are pretty good. She liked the Peach, she liked the Blueberry! Hey, that makes me the best next door neighbor ever ... all the flavors I don’t like, she’ll eat. What I’ve always liked about the original Neccos is that I will eat all the flavors (except clove). So there’s value there. Same with Lifesavers, SweeTarts, Skittles and Starbursts. Sure, there are flavors I don’t like, but it’s usually one. If I’m not going to eat 3/5 of the flavors in a roll of Smoothies, it’s a total loss as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, so you can see from the photo what the color/flavor distribution in this roll was. So I’ve eaten all the Banana and the Tropical, and I’m left with this huge pile of Strawberry, Peach and Blueberry. I wonder if they’ll make good sidewalk chalk? Note: Do take a moment and visit the Necco website. It is a little behind (highlighting Easter candies, but maybe they’re just letting people come look at the stuff because they’re still buying it on sale) but it’s nicely done and provides a lot more information about their history and candies than many other sites run by bigger companies. There’s even a section that shows how Necco Wafers are made.

Meticulously photographed and documented reviews of candy from around the world. And the occasional other sweet adventures. Open your mouth, expand your mind.

We New England natives must love the New England Confectionary Co. no matter what it does. Cybele, you ever buy the all-chocolate roll? And when you say “clove”, izzat the black one? which i always thought was licorice…
HI
Growing up outside of Boston it’s assumed that everyone likes these things. I think they are horrible as well. All of them-glad to see you think so too.
I got some Russel Stovers marshmallow eggs for .50 today, the ones that come in teh egg like carton, 12 for .50 not bad! off to get my free cone from ben and jerry’s now
I would place Necco wafers deep into the inedible category. I would rather eat Tums or Rolaids as to eat Neccos. Tg suggested the all-chocolate roll. Allow me to strongly suggest against it. That was my first experience with Neccos, and I was expecting something similar to discs of hot cocoa mix. I wasn’t able to detect anything but “chalklate” flavor, which didn’t suit me at all. A few years later, I tried a baby roll out of a Halloween basket at work. Each flavor was worse than the one before! The clove one (I didn’t know what the assortment was) was both a shock to taste, and the end of my Necco saga. I’ll never buy another.
For some reason I like the Necco hearts, but not the wafers. Even though I thought they were the same thing just in a different shape. Good to know I shouldn’t waste my time on these ones.
It’s amazing how a company can make something so so horrible (Necco wafers) and so so good (Sky Bar!) at the same time.
At Halloween, the people who gave mini rolls of Necco wafers were ranked with people who gave out religious pamphlets.
tg - clove is purple (which is sad because purple was my favorite color as a kid), black (or gray) ones were licorice, which I of course liked.
I have bought the chocolate ones, which I find nice, but never really satisfy any chocolate cravings.
What I like about the classic flavored Necco is the variety (fruit and spice) and that they’re indestructable - heat, cold, humidity, they don’t care.
Tami - I have struck out on five different excursions to find cheap Easter candy. Sigh.
Dave - I don’t think I had much taste as a kid and so I don’t have bad associations with classic Necco wafers (unlike the Bunny Basket Eggs).
Tara - I could always count on siblings or classmates to toss their Necco mini rolls my way after Halloween ... I had no shame. (I’m not a fan of the Sky bar.)
g - I think there are some slight differences in the flavors ... is the yellow heart really banana and the yellow disk lemon?
I like Necco’s website. Did you happen to click on “Addidional Brands”? Oh my gosh… WHERE can I get my hands on the Stinky Feet Candy? Genious!
And - as a malt lover, have you tried those Mighty Malts? Any good? I’ve never seen them - maybe they’re regional.
WACKY WAFERS!!!!! WOW…I haven’t thought about those in years.. I loved them!!!
Joanna - I tried the Stinky Feet! (Click on the Necco category and you can see all the stuff of theirs I’ve tried). I actually liked them. The Mighty Malts I wasn’t so fond of. I actually found them at the Dollar Tree store, which is where I have more luck finding the “off brands” of candy that just can’t afford to pay the grocery chain slotting fees.
Amy - I really miss wacky wafers ... though I’m finding that Runts are a pretty good approximation in flavor, but not quite in texture.
Yes..but Runts just aren’t the same somehow…too…hard or something…I don’t know…lol.
Never ever EVER try Necco Wafer Tarts. They are offensive to all taste buds. I hope, for the world’s sake, that they stopped making them (by the website it looks like they have).
Has anyone out there suffered through Necco Wafer Tarts or am I going crazy? I feel like this Smoothie mix was also a poor product variation for Necco.
P.S. - Supposedly the white ones are wintergreen in the originals? what?!
Yeah, Jesse, I had those tart versions of the conversation hearts and they were horrid. I didn’t even finish the tiny box.
In the original mix I think the white ones are cinnamon and the pink ones are wintergreen? It’s hard to remember without a roll in front of me.
Wow, what can’t be a smoothie flavor. I was looking for people who may want to share their recipes and found this blog. The neccos sound horrible. If you have time, place a real smoothie recipe on my blog. http://www.smoothieweb.com and thanks in advance.
HOW can we get WACKY WAFERS back?? I need them!
I like the original assorted wafers. Though that might because I remember getting the mini rolls in my childhood. Does anyone else think the green ones (which are supposed to be lime) taste like soap?
By the way, white is cinnamon ( a sweet one) and pink is wintergreen. I don’t think the chocolate ones are half bad. They do have real chocolate in them (listed on the ingredients).
i love necco wafers, and their chalky texture is a joy to bite down on after sucking it for a short while. I can’t seem to find the smoothie flavors, at longs, at walgreens, nor in other local stores. to buy them online it seems i have to buy a case. are there any chains that carry them that might be in san francisco, or any idea of where i could get just a roll to try in san franciscO?
I remenber the Necco Wafers when I was a kid and now I am 71 years old and I am still eating them.I found the smooties at a K-mart went to get more and now they don’t have them. Do you know where I can get them. I eat 10 to 12 rolls a week.But I want to fine the smooties as I like all the flavors in the reguler and the smooties. Mary Thompson
Loooking to see where I can fine the smoothes?
You could get Necco Sweethearts tiny smoothies - but they are gross!!! I didn’t know they made smoothies Necco wafers, yuck.
I have eating the Necco wafers about 50 years and they are good. I can’t wait to try the smooties.
No, no, no! Y’all have it wrong! Necco wafers are *good*, darn it!
Yes, I’ve been eating them since I was a kid. Nope, I don’t much like licorice or clove (they should substitute chocolate and grape or something), but the rest of them are fine and even wonderful.
The chocolate ones are great too. A nice moderate chocolate taste without the theobromine/caffeine factor, which means I can nibble them at night without having to worry about seeing the sunrise.
Necco wafers are probably one of those things, like Marshmallow Fluff (which is unobtainable on the West coast), that haven’t changed a bit in a century. Think about that for a moment: you’re sharing something with people from a hundred years ago. They’re retro-cool without having to be self-conscious about it. That counts for something.
Where can you buy the smoothers?
I like Neccos too, my Dad use to buy them for us as a kids in the early 60s. I don’t do the white ones, not sure what the flavor is, and the green ones remind me of Pine Sol. But i like the chocolate,wintergreen & clove is good too. When I get them i go thru and chuck the white and green ones.Good memories attached to them too. Gina
As a kid I didn’t really like Sweethearts, or Wafers, for that matter.
However, last year, I ran into the Tarts version. This year, I went a little insane, eating up to 5 boxes a day. (I have very bad dry mouth, and these are not as bad as some of the things I’ve eaten for it recently!) I was on the search for more since all the Valentines candy is gone. And apparently, there was a ‘rush’ on the Tarts this year, b/c NO ONE had any left. Even before Valentines.
Walgreens had the Tarts in 12 box packs, which was like manna from heaven to me.
I tried the Smoothies this year and hated them. They were terrible. I had the chocolate ones last year, and while they were ok, not as great as I’d like.
The original SHs were just bland to me, and hard. The Tarts, though, are wonderful!!!
BTW….I found a BUNCH of the Smoothies at Dollar Tree for those of you looking. This was during the Valentines season though.
Well, I liked them. First time I’ve tried Necco Wafers too, heh.
the comment at the beginning, i feel is wrong!!!!
i love the smoothies, please bring them back to
michigan kmart stores.
I absolutley LOVE the smoothies flavor of the wafers and cant get enough of them. They are hard to find in stores, as a matter of fact the only store that I have found to carry them is “Party City” and when they put out a box, I buy the entire thing. They dont keep extra stock, so I end up having to wait another week or two until a new order comes in. I’ve decided to start buying online. Doing it this way saves me money as well.
Now on the other hand, the new packaging i’m assuming means a change in flavors as well, because ever since they changed the packaging on the original flavors, I refuse to buy them. They are horrible now. Thank god for the smoothie flavors, otherwise I would have to give up necco wafers all together.
NECCO SMOOTHIES ROCK…. THEY ARE THE BEST, THEY HELPED ME WITH QUITTING SMOKING.
I have been eating the Necco wafers since I was 5 yo now 47 yo and eat a pack a day. when I heard they were changing the flavors I bought everyone of the old packs I could find. I have only 1 pack left. I bought my first pack of the New flavors. I HATE them they taste awful, and I have now lost a candy favorite. Going Natural is fine for those people that want all natural. But most people that eat natural dont eat sugar anyway. You should offer both the old favorites and New ones. Please bring them back even for a Holiday like easter.
Necco’s should be on the food group pyramid
I get emails from this site when a comment is added. I got one just now and that reminded me (Thanks!) that I have a ton of the Sweethearts Tarts I’ve GOT to get out of my house!! I loved ‘em for awhile and still like them somewhat, but not enough to keep the insane amount of them I’ve got. I guess I was ‘‘hoarding’’ them LOL
No matter what anyone says, Necco Smoothies were was absolute favorite of all candies and man, I miss them!
I love Necco wafers a lot, in fact I’ve even got a bit of the wrapper from my LATEST one in my trash can..glucose goruman, yes, Marshmallow Fluff is UNFORTAUNTELY unobtainable on the west coast…I was surprised to find that our West Coast has the ONLY eaters of some candy…maybe we could get the Fluff sent by mail (but I’ll just take those little wafers from the east coast…).
By the way, I saw people confused about classic Necco Wafer colors versus Taste..it is confusing, especially when another company’s similiar looking brand Smarties don’t even keep the same match from flavor to color from package to package..
Anyway, here are the classic rainbow flavors of the original 1847 Neccos (I’ve seen 1863 as the original date..)
(This, of course, excludes the short lived natural series introduced in 2009 temporarily).
White=Cinnamon. (Don’t ask.)
Pink=YES, just like Pepto Bismol, Wintergreen.
Lavender Violet=Clove
Green=Lime
Brown=Chocolate
Black=Licorice
Yellow=Lemon
Orange=Orange.
Just came back from Vegas and had about four Necco wafers, including one (I finally found it) all chocolate. They are ALL good…yum.
Tara, Cyble, I enjoy the SkyBar (and anyone here rememkebr the Seven Up bar made by others, but which I last saw in 1974?:D)!
