Lifesavers Jellybeans

DSC09417rI’ve been rather peeved with Lifesavers for a few years. In fact, you might even call my rant about the Five Roll flavors changing my first Candy Blog post.

But if I was complaining before that the five flavor roll changed to accommodate new flavors, I should be pleased that the Lifesavers Jellybeans actually have all my favorite flavors (well, no tangerine, but orange will do nicely). My other pet peeve is that the colors on their logo no longer match the flavors. If you look at the package it lists the flavors on a different color stripe, but the color of the stripe doesn’t match the flavor. Oh well.

The Lifesavers Jelly Beans are about the size of Jelly Belly, but a little fatter around the middle. The colors are bold and appealing and the quality control was very good - the beans were very consistent.

Grape - has tones of both fake grape and a little smidge of concord in there, just like grape soda.
Strawberry - sweet and floral with a tangy bite.
Cherry - tastes like a cherry Lifesavers ... it’s kind of growing on me ... oh wait, it’s bitter now, never mind.
Orange - zesty and tart like it should be.
Peach - surprisingly round in its flavor, still I pick them out (but they look a lot like the orange).
Lemon - like the orange, a good balanced citrus flavor.
Green Apple - artificial tasting, through and through.
Pineapple - sassy and tart with a good flowery note and a touch of cotton candy ... just like it should be.

Overall, with only two flavors I didn’t much care for (cherry & peach), this is an excellent assortment. They’re not quite Jelly Belly (which pack flavor through and through), but for a fraction of the price they’re admirable. I actually liked them much better than the Starburst ones I tried last year. There’s another pastel mix of flavors as well: Red Raspberry, Mango Medley, Cotton Candy, Watermelon, Blueberry, Pina Colada, Strawberry-Kiwi, and Banana which also sounds pretty tasty. (I’ll probably give those a try if they’re sitting around after Easter on sale.)

  1. Whoa, I must be living in a cave. They CHANGED the 5 flavor roll? I haven’t had Lifesavers in ages, but I assumed they were the same since the stripes were the same. LIES! I used to eat these as a kid all the time and have fond memories of all the original 5 flavors. *sigh* That is such a shame…

So the green is Apple flavored? Yech. Bring back the lime I say!

  2. I love your description of the pineapple. Sounds complex. And I LOVE green apple flavor! YAY! It’s artificial through and through, but it still makes my mouth water. To hell with lime!

  3. I say that they should bring lime back as well.  And they used to sell rolls that were cherry only, but I always wanted full rolls of EVERY OTHER FLAVOR.  I always assumed that cherry was probably cheapest to make, since most rolls seemed to be about half cherry.

I’m sure these jelly beans are fine, just like LS Gummis are.  Anyone else miss Holes?

Sera - I miss the lime lifesavers too. The colors on the 5 flavor roll have NOTHING to do with the flavors any longer.

Alex - they could have at least put some lime in there (of course then the colors would have been even more confusing).

Dave - I’m with you about the Red ... I was always everyone’s best friend because I seemed so “generous” giving folks the red ones (which they coveted).

I forgot all about Holes! (I liked them but they were kind of expensive.)

  5. I haven’t tried these, but keep an eye out for Sweet Tarts jellybeans. After buying a bag and tasting them, a friend of mine went and bought the entire stock of our neighboorhood Eckerd, which is the only place we have been able to find them. They are excellent, they seem to be about the size of these lifesavers ones but they appear to use real crushed sweettarts in the candy shell. They have a great balance of jelly bean and grainy sweet-tartiness.

  6. Hey, does it say on the bag about how many jelly beans there are per serving, and how many servings? Thanks!

Jessica - I try to keep things standard here with a comparison of calories per ounce, no matter the serving size. But I happen to still have the package here at hand to check out what you were looking for.

The package says a serving is 32 pieces (40 grams - about 1.41 ounces) and is 150 calories. That would mean there are 10 servings in the 14 ounce bag.

Zac - the look of the SweeTarts Jelly Beans has always scared me ... but your recommendation means I’ll give them a try!

  8. Thanks!

I’m trying to win a huge mix bowl of various jelly beans (Lifesaver, Starburst, Sweetart, and Jolly Rancher). To win, you have to guess how many are in the jar and I believe they put in 1 bag of each, so I’m scouting out the serving sizes. If you happen to have the other information, that’d be great!
    Thanks again!

  9. Jessica-
Don’t know about the other 2 but the Sweet tart ones have 29 beans in a serving and “about” 10 servings in a bag, so around 290 beans. Seems to be pretty close to the lifesavers ones, the calories are 140 a serving but there are 3 less beans…

  10. Just discovered this blog, and I am giddy over it all. Candy has had a special place in my heart since I was a wee girl, hiding a stash beneath my bed and digging into it when I should have been sleeping.

Upon your recommendation, I tried the Lifesaver jelly beans, and I love ‘em. So much better than the Starburst ones which had been my favorite (second only to Jelly Bellies).

Have you ever tried the Mike & Ike jellybeans? A friend recommended them, and I’m curious.

  11. I found a bag of “easter flavored” lifesaver jellybeans in case you’re interested. they have flavors like pina colada and raspberry, and other “tropical” sounding fruits.  I got them in vancouver at a zellers smile  I’ll be trying them tonight or tomorrow.

  12. I just bought a bag of the pastel jellybeans for Easter—I thought the flavors would be great because their pastel lollipops in banana and cotton candy, etc. were really tasty. Most of these flavors are OK, but as for the blueberry—I think that’s what evil must taste like—yuk! I’d stick with the 5-flavor ones. smile

  13. I bought a bag of lifesavers jellybeans before Easter & brought them to my office.  Everyone loved them.  Now I want to buy more & can’t find them.  CVS said they are a seasonal product.

    Help???

  14. I know its not the “5 Flavor” standard, but for some reason I was expecting Butter Rum jelly bean flavor in this bag.  Sigh.  No such luck.  I was really disappointed.  I think I would buy a whole bag of those.  Now I’m thinking about them again…

  17. I bought 2 bags for Easter. The pink (strawberry) taste like poison and everyone was spitting those out of their mouths!!! The other colors are fine but if you popped a handful and a pink one got in the whole bunch got spit out! Poison pink it should be called.

  18. I bought these about a week ago and they tasted so horrible i called in to complain. The worst was the Grape. It tasted like medicine. Every flavor I ate made me want to throw up. The peach tasted good at first, but had a horrible aftertaste. The rest were just horrible, I ended up throwing the bag away. For a non-Jelly Belly brand, I’d recommend Starburst Jelly Beans instead.

  20. To those that cannot find these yummy eats:  A few years ago they decided to pull them from the shelves.  Now they are only available around Easter.  But if you do happen to find them, let us know where!

  21. I am a big fan of the lifesaver jellybeans, so you need to tell me where are they now. I use to go to walgreens and get them all the time but when they run out I would go to Shuncks. Now no one has them any more.I love them bring them back I have all my co-worker asking me for them talking about how good they are. (Zina)

  23. Come on! Please be more caring about our cherry lovers I love cherry and usually am giving out lemon and strawberry caries first! Please!

  24. Why can’t you sell Lifesaver Jellybeans all year round not just at Easter.
Would be nice all so if you added Butter Rum Life Saver Jellybeans. I can’t chew hard candy
anymore and I don’t like your gummy lifesavers.
    Please consider my ideas!

  25. I had decided to try all Jelly Beans in the store this season and rate them too.  I started with the Jolly Rancher - I rated 7 out of 10 (being best) - Life Saver - I disliked with a 3 - Gimbals of SF - 4, Starburst - best so far at 8 - lastly, so far, Brachs at 7 - I am starting to get a stomach ache but will go forward.

  26. We bought 2 bags of livesavers assorted jellybeans at Easter and now we will not eat any other. We have looked everywhere and tried every kind.  Nothing measures up.  We love those fruit flavored jellybeans.  They are the best, but we can not find them now.  My husband looks in every store to no avail.  Can you tell us where they can be purchased? Thank you so much.
I look forward to hearing from you. Carolyn

  27. I am looking for life savers jelly beans and in the past they were really easy to find around Easter time.  But this year and there’s still over a month away, before it’s Easter and I can’t even find one bag of them.  Can you tell me why, I can’t find any?

  28. I have a bag of Lifesavers Jelly Beans left over from last year.  Can anyone tell me how to determine the expiration date?
