Junior Mints Deluxe

Junior Mints DeluxeI’m keen on the combination of dark chocolate and mint. I’d say that there’s nothing better, but then avid readers will probably find instances where I’ve said the same about the combination of chocolate and peanut butter and probably orange and chocolate and probably pretzels and chocolate.

There have been a few new versions of Junior Mints, including the Inside Out, Junior Mints Pastels and Heart Shaped Junior Mints over the past few years. They didn’t mess with the peppermint flavor or the proportions of the elements. Instead they messed with the chocolate element.

The new Junior Mints Deluxe are jumbo sized. They’re the same size as Cella’s Chocolate Covered Cherries, which are also made by Tootsie. At the top of the chocolate shell are the initials JM.

They’re two bites big (about a half an ounce each) and the soft fondant center flows quickly if you don’t tip it up quickly after biting it open. The chocolate shell is thick and dark but is pretty sweet. It doesn’t have that waxy shellac that Junior Mints usually have.

I really liked the flavor of the huge reservoir of the fondant center. It was intensely minty, so much that it cut through what would ordinarily be very sweet. The large two bite version can be messy and I haven’t quite gotten the hang of it. I suspect popping the whole thing in the mouth at once is the way to go, but I can’t resist looking at the innards.

Again, there is the issue of proportions here, I think this is a little off for my tastes with the gooey center, but if you’re a fan of the gooey center, this may be your new favorite. They should be available in stores after Halloween. This box comes with 12 in it and weighs 6 ounces. There are no dairy or egg products in this (though may be processed on equipment that comes in contact with milk) so it may be suitable for liberal vegans.

  6. These do look tasty and I will certainly search them out. But it is hard to top the original Jr Mints for originality. There’s not much else out there like them, and they are so perfect for movie watching. These seem a bit unwieldy and not as unique. That said, I agree that chocolate and mint combos are never unwelcome!

  7. I only have Junior Mints every so often.  And when I do, I eat them until I am sick or they are gone - whichever comes first.  I will keep my eyes open for these!

  10. I haven’t seen these yet.  And I’m not sure I want to be tempted with them.  Because I will be tempted to try them.  It’s just that I don’t want to be dissappointed. I think it’s pretty hard to improve on Jr. Mints.  They are one of my all time top five favortie candy.

And my best friend’s son, named Junior, thought I was making the name up, until he learned to read and realized that they really are Junior Mints.

  13. My friend and I (both huge mint chocolate fans) tasted them this morning and liked them, even though they are a bit messy.  The chocolate is so much thicker than a Junior Mint - it seems more a fancy confection than a drug store candy. It’s a good addition to the line - why not?  And how can I not appreciate a candy that has my own monogram embossed right into the chocolate?  Love that! I can’t believe I never noticed that I share the same intials with one of my favorite candies of all time.

  14. Well…you could eat them like I eat Cella’s. Bite off the top or bottom, suck out the mint filling, and then eat the remaining chocolate. I’d go for the top, then you’d be able to put it down without worrying about it tipping and losing the filling.
Yes, I have eating the cherries down to a science. I’m officially wierd.

  19. Oh man, I love mint-chocolate but I’m not a big fan of syrupy stuff.  I’m torn about buying an entire box of these.

  20. I’ll have to try these. Does the box have the same quality as the original junior mints, where you can stick your nose in and inhale that wonderful aroma until people start looking at you strangely? “My name is Tricia, and I sniff junior mints boxes.”

  23. These look pretty good, but the benefit of Junior Mints was that they had a good proportion of a dark chocolate shell that wasn’t so sweet to offset the minty fondant in the middle. It seems like the gooey sugar would overpower instead of compliment the chocolate. Plus, Junior mints are the perfect bite-size and are WAY better frozen!

  24. I want to try these so bad, but I still have not been able to find them anywhere. I was at a small candy shop at the mall over the weekend and they had sold singles, but they were over priced and all smushed :(
