Jolly Rancher Double Blasts

imageRemember Zotz? Those hard candies with a sour and fizzy center? These aren’t those.

Jolly Rancher Double Blasts are billed as “flavor-infused powder filled candy.” Each little bag contains a mix of two flavor combos, Chorange (Cherry outside and Orange inside) and Raspilime (Blue Raspberry outside and Lime inside).

image

Each little candy rod is about the same diameter as a pencil. The color and shape makes them look more like little pegs that you’d use with Tinkertoys than candy, but that didn’t keep me from putting them in my mouth (or from them marking them as a choking hazard for young children). The hard candy outside is nice, it’s tangy and flavorful but not at all like the traditional Jolly Rancher hard candies that have a pliable stickiness to them. Pretty soon, as the candy dissolves, especially around the seams, you start getting a little jolt of the powdered center. The center is the second flavor and is not that strong, but the texture and effect is pretty stunning.

The powder is made from erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol like xylitol that has an instant cooling effect. It’s also sweet, which is also a plus!

They’re pretty addictive in the sense that each time I ate one, I was trying to either crack them open with my teeth to get to the super-cooled center or suck on the candy so that as much of it as possible had dissolved by the time I got to the powder. In the sense that the flavor combos are tasty, well, I could take them or leave them. I was surprised at how much I liked the Chorange, seeing how the bulk of it is Cherry and the Raspilime was just kind of boring (and my assortment had twice as many Choranges).

I’m hoping they’ll do some other flavor combos, but I’m most interested in the other version of these called Sour Bolt Blasts, which might be more like Zotz and have one flavor through and through.

Of course they still make Zotz, so I could just go find some of those.

These candies were made in Canada.

  1. I saw these the last time I was at target and debated about trying them. I didn’t read the package closely and just assumed that the center would be sour. After reading the review, I think I will give them a go; the center actually sounds pretty good.

But really, “Chorange”? Not that appealing as far as flavor names go, even if it is accurate.

  2. Interesting about the erythritol. I recently bought a bag of starburst for birthday party bags, and it included some “limited edition icy bursts” (strawbrrrry flavor). I got an odd kind of fizzing sensation when I tried one - it was a bit unnerving and unpleasant and made me wonder if they’d somehow fermented! I wonder if they were using erythritol in there? (I just looked at the starburst web site but it’s all flash and glitter, I can’t find an ingredients list. It might not have bothered me if I’d been expecting it, but I really didn’t like the flavor of those strawbrrrrrry ones.

Tricia - it’s weird that you mention the Starburst Icy Bursts because I bought some of those too at the same time. I looked at the ingredients this morning (before you even left this comment!) to see if this sweetener was in there, and it’s not. I haven’t tried the Icy Bursts yet, so I can’t say if they’re similar in cooling feeling, but I’ll try to photograph/post about the Starbursts next week.

Nic - yeah, if Chorange is the name they ended up picking, it makes me wonder what they rejected.

  4. Mmm…Zots! I absolutely loved those when I was a kid! Whenever I see them now, I buy a strand or two so I can introduce the kids in my life to them!

  5. They remind me of sherbet lollies we used to get as kids at the pool. I think they were called Sherbies? They had sherbert in the middle but i don’t think it was flavoured, only the outsides were. Very sweet and cheap. Which of course was what we were looking for as kids.

  6. Well there goes my theory - destroyed by data! Alas. I wonder what it is, then?

On “chorange” - makes me think of chocolate orange.

  7. The bag I picked up at a nearby Brooks Pharmacy had two more flavors than the ones you mentioned.  Let me see if I can remember: Mangolemin [mango and lemon] and Strawapple [strawberry and apple].
The only ones of the entire bag that I could tolerate were the Raspilimes, with the most distasteful being the Mangolemin.  DO NOT TRY THIS FLAVOR.  It left a bad taste in my mouth for a while.
I found the “cooling” effect to be freaky and unpleasant and the flavor combinations to be completely wrong.  Not to knock your taste at all, Cybele, I just think they totally missed the mark on this candy.

Jesse - I get where you’re coming from about them being freaky and not very good, but I couldn’t ignore the fact that I ate the whole bag, which is why it got as good a rating as it did. Sometimes I get to intellectual about the candy and this time I just observed myself.

I’m glad you piped in with your review so folks get both sides of it. If anyone’s interested in trying them, I definitely suggest the little bag as a trial size instead of the bigger ones.

(Mango does so sound dreadful, I love fresh mangos but I pretty much detest anything mango flavored.)

Now I want to find some Zotz.

Comment by Cybele on 8/18/06 at 6:44 am #
  9. I totally understand being too intellectual about this candy instead of more…er…sensory.  These would have definitely benefitted from a genuine Jolly Rancher hard candy shell with the erythritol powder inside.

Candy makers obviously have no clue what real mango tastes like.

  10. Has anyone else experenced a sore throat after eating candy/gum containing xylitol?  I have only chewed gum containing it.  Each time my throat became sore after a few pieces.  At first I thought I was just getting a cold, but now I avoid gum with this ingredient alltogether.  I do like the cooling sensation though. :0)

  11. I got the Sour Bolt Blasts Jolly Ranchers that look very similar to these.  And my friend and I both had the first reaction that they were like Zotz.  I have been enjoying them quite a bit and am kicking myself for not bringing them into work today.

  12. Nic if you are in Target at the check lane you will see the Sour Blasts. If you want to try the package of candy that Cybele reviewed with the Chorange you need to go to the regular candy section. In most stores there is a 4 ft section with Limited edition and King size bars that will include the $.59 size Double Blasts if you want to try them. I thought the Double Blasts reminded me of Mr. Fizz

  24. you idiots it’s not liquid it just seems like it because you are sucking it through the whole of candy, break it open it’s power.

Comment by ryan on 8/10/07 at 7:15 pm #
  25. Ahem, ryan, it’s only candy.  I really don’t think we need to resort to name calling, do you?  Anyway, to vinny and narwhal, you might have picked up Jolly Rancher Sour Bolt Blasts instead of the Double Blasts.  The Sour Bolt Blasts are one flavor all the way through, and they have a fruity liquid center.

If not, I would definitely return the Double Blasts to the store.  Sounds like they might have gone off or something…

  26. I love the new jolly rancher double blasts. I gave some to my friend and when he shares them, he gives me all the yellow.. that’s right, yellow! they made a new flavor, mangolemin. They’re are not as good as the red and blue but still ooozes out the goodness

Comment by Michdan on 10/02/07 at 6:14 am #
  27. Hi - my sister found Jolly Rancher Sourbolt Blasts candies in repackaged bulk bags at one of the large 99-cent stores in Manhattan.  They had Rasplime, MangoLemon, Sour Strawberry and Sour Apple.  The only one that we can tolerate is the Rasplime, because it’s seems pretty sweet and mild and we like lime as a flavor.  The fizzy powder really startled me on first try!  The other candies are awful, with the Mangolemon being truly vile.  All the flavors have a very chemical taste to them, not like the usual Jolly Rancher products.  The food dyes also do a number on the tongue - you’ll get a vivid mouth color after just one candy.

I took all the other flavors except Raspilime to work for the public candy bowl and the response has ranged from immediate spit out to “it’s not bad”.  It’s almost a spectator sport to watch for the reactions smile

  28. Hey-I just got back fron trick-or-treating about two and a half hours ago and found out I had 10 one of “new” double-flavor Jolly Ranchers. I am in LOVE with the blue ones, I have one of red & one of yellow, but I haven’t tried them yet. The powder is delicious I freakin love these things! I went up to one house three different times to get more of them!! I am going to Target as soon as I can!!! Thanks for the info!

  29. WOW! i absolutely love these! even the mangolemin that everyone seems to be so against. the fizzy sensation was..unexpected, but very pleasant once i realized it was supposed to do that! :]
    THANK YOU JOLLY RANCHERS!

  30. I got two of these from Trick or Treating.  The first one I tried didn’t have that cool center for whatever reason. (I didn’t know it was supposed to.) But the second one like..burst inside my mouth.  I was a little creeped out by it.  I thought maybe someone had tampered with this one, since the first one didn’t have the same thing.  Luckily I looked online and saw that indeed it’s supposed to do that.

Comment by Rita on 11/02/07 at 12:22 pm #
  31. It’s so odd that everyone hated the Mangolemin. I guess I must be really odd, but I loved it. I didn’t know what the candies were at work, and they were sitting out. After trying one in the morning I had to sneak back in the afternoon and find the last one in the bag. Delicious. ^.^

  32. WOW!  I just had the first one of these ever (after my parents sent some “American” candy to me in France for Halloween.  Because I was unfamiliar with them and the wrapper gave very little information, I thought they might be soft, chewy candies.  When I bit down into my “Chorange,” I was shocked!  I certainly was not expecting a powder-filled center!  Wow…interesting combination…I like it!

  35. Hi Cybele! My friend wants to tell you something.
“This candy is really good especially the sour part
in the center. And I like original Jolly Ranchers.”

She also wanted to give you a bunch of retarded crap, but that would be rude.

  36. I am looking for a Jolly Rancher hard candy that is disk shaped.  The flavor I had was half green apple and half grape.  I can’t seem to find them anywhere, even on Jolly Rancher’s website.  Anyone know what I’m talking about?

  38. well, i got a “mangolemin” flavored jolly rancher double blast, and, being my weird usual self, i wanted to research about it first before eating it, and apparently everyone says it’s horrible…

I got curious and tried it…

dude, it tasted so good. I wonder why you people find it disgusting… i want another one D:

  39. I think that the mangolemin one is devine! It tastes so good and I want to go find them and get me some more! I have had the chorange and raspilime as well. My daughter had the strawpple. I think that they are all good, but I think that I like the mangolemin and raspilime the best!
I too do not understand why you all think it is so vile! I find it tasty and devine! Maybe reformulated since you all tried it last year!

  40. I think the jolly rancher baster are fantastic. My first experience with them was at a middle school tutoring fair. I did not try one until the fair was over and I wish I had gotten more, they were great. I have been looking everywhere for them. I visited my sisters in Raytown, Mo and that is where I found them. The store had seven bags on the shelf, I purchased all seven bags. Now I am low on them and I can not find them locally. Where can I purchase these jolly ranchers. I tried on line but the candy warehouse said that they were out of stock and maybe discontinue by manufactor. Please help!!!!!
