Toddlers got a Saf-T sucker, pretzels, and Hallowen bubbles.
Big kids got a Caramel Apple Sucker, a Payday or $100,000 bar; Halloween shaped candies similar to Runts, glow bracelets, a random chocolate from a big Hershey’s bag; Halloween shaped Gummis, and individual bags of Brach’s candy corn (not easy to find in big bags!
Sullen teenagers sans costumes who simply opened their backpacks received something from the leftover bowl, preferably Mounds or Almond Joy if I could find one.
My coworkers got mini Ritter Sports bars (Cost Plus World Market—cute!), Bissingers dark chocolate leaves, some milk chocolate pumpkins whose brand name I can’t remember from Whole Foods, and Target Halloween gummis which they LOVE. (They think they’re healthy!)
Vegans and folks with allergens got various Yummy Earth and Surf Sweet lollies and gummis and Seitenbacher Vampire’s Lunch Blackcurrant Gummis depending on age and needs.
My niece and nephew got Orange Halloween Pop Rocks, Jelly Belly Candy Corn, these little light up gelli glow worms, gummy fangs, and dark chocolate (dairy allergies).
Yes, we are big on Halloween around here!
I actually don’t eat much candy myself (that’s why I read the blog!) but I did have a couple of mini Twix I found in one of the big mix bags.
Happy Halloween to you, Cybele! Thank you for a wonderful blog! I had a bowl half-filled with leftover candies that have been given to me and bought a bag or caramel apple pops. I live in a mobile home park, and usually don’t get too many trick or treaters, but this year (because of the World Series?) I only had ONE! Had I known he was the only kid, he could have had the entire bowl. Now I have leftover leftovers! Brought them to work!
I’m just a college student but I was really excited for tricker treaters this year. We gave out assorted snack sized kit kats, peanut m&ms;, twix and other snack sized chocolates. We also gave out dum dums and airheads.
I tried to be generous because while I love candy now (obviously!) I still remember really well just how happy nice neighbors on Halloween made me as a kid.
Also: I looked everywhere (in my area at least, it’s tough without a car) for those caramel apple pops, and I just couldn’t find them. I guess I’ll have to keep my eyes open earlier next year.
Just came across this site. I am from England where Halloween isn’t quite as big here, but still got plenty of trick or treaters. As a joke me and my housemates covered some hard boiled Brussels sprouts in chocolate, and handed them out to unsuspecting kids that were particularly annoying. Call me mean, but it was hilarious to see the look on their faces when they bit into one.
every year when halloween candy starts filling the stores, i HAVE to pick up a bag of candy corn. it’s so simple, but it is the ultimate halloween candy.
i still need to raid the stores for candy leftovers…
My boyfriend and I gave out tootsie rolls, fruit flavoured tootsie rolls, tootsie pops and dots. We only had 10 kids though. I hate that mall trick or treating has taken over. This year was gorgeous out and snow free! Makes no sense to me.
Hi Cybele .... everyone! How was Halloween? Hope ya’all had a fun time. REPLY to: Mark in England ... “chocolate covered brussel sprouts????” Ohgoshno. Too nasty. Kids should never eat anything professionally unwrapped anyway. Ugh. REPLY to: Allegra .... yes, I observed that in SD California years ago w/friends. Malls are safer for children. Also, much easier to get lots more goodies faster!!! Sooo, let’s chat ..... this past weekend (today is November 11, 2010 .... Cybele, I’m responding to your 10/31 post here) we were rummaging through tons of 50%+ off candy, etc. at several stores in the neighborhoods. Made a few selections: Reese’s Lovers (30 snack size pieces) Assortment. I found them (FastBreak ... a first time for me to try)... (PB Sticks ... also first time) to be highly salty. Not good because sodium can be easily hidden from all of us. Reese’s Pieces were okay. You only need .49 ounces. That is plenty of sugar to tide anyone over!! Also purchased 1, 9 ounce bag PBKisses from Melster. So-so candy. Most likely will not buy again. Necco PBMJ’s are much more flavorful. Taste, learn & remember! Lastly, with much hesitation, a 6.5 ounce bag (Oak Leaf/Toronto) (cute!!) Pumpkin Faces Gum Balls. They were individually packaged in two’s ... 1 black 1 orange w/smiley faces. Actually, they have a great chew, last a long while ... enjoyable. Weird, but I spit out the sugar at the onset! Just a mention Cybele, that we saw tons and tons of Palmer’s (yucky) candy. Ohh, never again will I buy ANY. Very sorry I did 15+ years ago. Awful. I’d be a happy woman w/a refund from Palmer’s. Cybele, for the record+your question .... our house does not give treats any longer. Sigh. We did for over 35 years. The very best candy/chips/pretzels, etc. Also, in this neighborhood, it isn’t unusual to have anywhere from 300-400 treaters throughout the early evening into 8:30+p.m. Overall, it is a very-very expensive endeavor to give children good quality treats. Sadly, no more elaborate house decorations either. I do miss that a lot. But, one cannot tease children w/house decor and not give out treats. They definitely go together. So yeah, these days we are tired and toooo old to continue the huge task of Halloween ~ LOL!! So, until next year folks .... almost time for another HAPPY THANKSGIVING!(America has CANDY for THAT too .... E-N-J-O-Y!!!
P.S. Cybele .... Wow ... not easy describing/talking about candy, etc. Much more difficult that I imagined it to be. Got to get those facts righted. So, CANDY-BLOG is IT!!! Please keep entertaining us Cybele ... and thank you!
