Happy Blog-iversary!

Today marks one year since Candy Blog was born!

imageIf you look back through the archives, you’ll notice quite a few things have evolved in only a year. The rating system and of course the entire site design changeover back in November. Since then I’ve reviewed well over 300 candies (I don’t know the precise number) from more than 25 countries.

Of course my obsession with candy has not waivered. In fact, this week I am in New York City and have completely immersed myself in a quest for candy and candy stores. I’ve already visited Economy Candy (everything under the sun), Russ & Daughters (halvah) and Jacques Torres (chocolate). Today I’ll probably head over to Maison du Chocolat and perhaps later this week Dylan’s Candy Bar, Marie Belle, Aji Ichiban and Vosges. If you have suggestions for Manhattan candy stores, leave a comment!

One of the most exciting things about the blog for me has been connecting with so many people and hearing your thoughts and experiences on candy. Each day, each post and each comment just cements my belief that the love of candy is a celebration of community and all the great things that we have in common. I’m so honored that I have so many faithful readers and I hope you all enjoy yourselves and of course it’s great to see the traffic on the site grow and grow each month.

In celebration of the anniversary of Candy Blog, I’m planning a special drawing for some candy next week (when I get home), so everyone gets to share in the fun! (Image swiped from CandyBaskets.com)

  5. Hey Cybele,

I had a good time at this place called The Bespeckled Trout when I was in NY last summer.  It’s an old-timey (real, not fake) General Store with lots of good retro candies.  And a soda fountain and nice baked goods.  I just sort-of happened upon it while I was walking down to Jacque Torres shop (Manhattan, not Brooklyn).  The people were super-friendly and I left with a big smile on my face.  http://www.newyorkmetro.com/listings/stores/bespeckled_trout/

  7. Congratulations!

I had found your wonderful blog several months ago, and have visited it at least thrice weekly.  It has really introduced me to the fun of trying new things!  Thanks for creating such a wonderful blog, and here’s to many more years to come! smile

  8. Congratulations, Candy Blog!

Have fun candy shopping!  Dylan’s is lots of fun, though there’s nothing too out-of-the-ordinary there.  I’d love to know if Marie Belle has brought back the liquid caramels they used to sell and then discontinued.  They were amazing blobs of caramel in a milk chocolate shell.  Why they’d get rid of these, I’ll never know.

Now to try out the Vosges Oaxaca bar I just got in the mail…

there’s lots of good candy, some sold in bulk, at the little kosher stores on the LES. imported israeli hard candy, sesame candy, stuff like that.  i never developed a taste for halvah. my grandparents love it.

  16. Happy ‘versary! Hard to believe it’s just a year. And like someone else said, I have gained a new williingness to try new things from reading your blog - and not just the things you’ve reviewed! Reading your reviews has helped me think of candy as something to analyze, dissect, and enjoy for qualities beyond “i’ve had that before”.

  17. Congratulations on your anniversary! You’ve tipped me off to some great stuff, so I pass along Kee’s Chocolates, which is right near Vosges. 80 Thompson just south of Spring Street.

All handmade, the creme brulee truffles in particular are delicious. Go early in the day for the best selection. Or call and ask them to put aside an assortment for you.

Also, Pierre Marcolini, 485 Park Avenue between 58th and 59th, is tremendous. (more along the lines of Maison du Chocolate)

Joanna & Shortstop - great ideas (actually, it looks like the Trout and Kees are quite close!) and Marcolini is walking distance from the office.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support! It’s so great to see new names on the comments too! I always knew there were other folks out there.

I love sharing the bravery of candy (and of course I think the chances we take with our food extends to our lives) ... nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I’ve picked up some fantastic stuff in the past day (and over the weekend). I’m so excited to go home and take photos and show everyone everything I got.

  20. Hi Cybele,
This is my first post on this site although I’ve been a long time visitor (practically since it began) and I thought this would be the perfect time to begin posting - I think congratulations are in order - CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SUCCESS!  May we all be united in our love for candy!

Thanks for being so straight forward in all your reviews.  It’s a pleasure to read them - I always look forward to seeing the latest candy.  The reason I love this site so much is because it has candy (international) that I’ve never even heard of.  Thanks for all your insight!  You have broadened my candy horizon! smile

  22. Happy Anniversary! Love reading the reviews, and I too find myself keeping my eyes open for new candies as well as things you’ve reviewed.  Keep up the good work.  And you should let us know which are your preferred candy stores from your visit… so next time I’m in NYC I know where to go first!
