Gobstopper Heart Breakers

Gobstopper Heart BreakersYes, more heart shaped versions of popular candies. What’s different with the Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper Heart Breakers is more than the shape.

I’ve always loved Gobstoppers, especially the ones that came out originally that were more Everlasting (tm) than the current mini ones. They were the size of real jawbreakers (about the size of a walnut) and would actually last for an hour. I found the flavor layers a little more vibrant than the Ferrara Pan ones I was used to. It also seemed smoother and kind of cool on the tongue, great for a summer treat. Later they were reformatted to include a compressed dextrose sour center ... which is kind of nice too, because it means I can crunch it. I’m a cruncher.

Gobstopper Heart BreakersThe Heart Breakers are a similarly layered candy with a sweet & sour chalk center.

The color variety is different here than the regular bright versions in the box and lacking a green/apple one. But they gain a pink/strawberry.

The heart shape is soft and rounded, about the same diameter as a penny. They’re shiny and have the added bonus that they don’t roll around and off my desk like the spherical non-holiday version.

Gobstopper Heart Breakers

I think I might prefer these to the round ones. The fit nicely in the mouth, it’s easy to roll my tongue around on them or simply tuck it into my cheek discretely if I have to talk.

The flavor is mild. The candy layers have a light sweet flavor of whatever layer, with the out layer being the strongest. There’s no tartness with the outer layers, it’s all sweet. The “SweeTart” center is also only mildly flavored and not terribly sour, just a little on the tangy side and of course grainy.

They also look fabulous in the little jar, which is half the fun of candy. Of course they don’t last long in the jar. These would also make a fabulous candy for favors and candy buffets.

I don’t miss the green ones and actually like the strawberry quite a bit. I found the price of $1.99 for 12 ounces to be a bit high for a sugar candy, but if I can find these on sale after Valentine’s they’ll probably keep for quite a while. (I know, this is strange coming from a woman who just wrote about spending $5 on a candy bar yesterday.)

These Gobstoppers were made in Mexico.

  1. This is a bit off topic but I purchased limited edition St. Patty’s Day Creme De Menthe Hershey’s kisses last night. They taste almost exactly like a York Peppermint Patty. Just wondering if anyone has tried them yet.

  2. The bleak long winter is broken in early February by the arrival of Heartbreakers. Beautiful colors, lovely, cheery flavor. I buy these by the bag and am sad to see the last one go.

  5. HELP!!!  I am addicted to Gobstopper Hearts.  I look forward to Valentine’s Day each year to stock up on these candies.  I am disappointed this year because I can not find them in any stores.

  6. I’m also very disappointed that I haven’t been able to find heartbreakers for the past 2 years.  I’ve even looked to buy them online and all I can find is a 9 pound box of them.

  7. I always look forward to Heartbreakers each Valentines day, but this year I can’t find any in the stores, and unless I want to buy 9 pounds online, or pay ridiculous pricese, I can’t seem to find them elsewhere. Did they stop making them this year?

Sera at TheCandyEnthusiast.com says that she found them at WalMart over the weekend. I’ve looked at CVS and Walgreen’s and haven’t seen them this year.

  10. I hear you guys!! I tried to find them at Target this year and they did not carry them! I am so glad to hear that other people love them as much as I do!! Good luck-I am considering the 9 lb box, even though I don’t think I could afford the dentist bills afterwords!

  13. My sister and I have always LOVED Heartbreakers!  We bought a whole case online and haven’t regretted it.  The only problem is how to keep them away from the kids…

  14. I still have some of the large Wonka everlasting gobstoppers (I stocked up in the late 80’s).  I agree about the “cool” smooth texture and they really last a long time.  There were actually two sizes made at the time: larger ones were sold in a small two-pack, and the slightly smaller ones were sold in a box.  There have been several changes since then, everytime they get smaller and they don’t taste the same.

  15. Has anyone seen the Heartbreakers candy this year? I have looked at Walmart and Walgreens, and haven’t found any. Please help!

  16. I have not been able to find ANY of the old Valentines candy I like.  The Gobstopper Heartbrakers, the Ju Ju Hearts and the old Farley conversation Hearts (not the brachs or the sweetheart ones…)

Help!  If anyone can locate a store where these can be bought, please tell me grin

  17. Hi.  funny…thought I was the only one who loved the larger size (heart-shaped) gobstoppers…I see I am not alone.  CANDYWAREHOUSE.com is where you can buy 12 oz bags for a total of 9 pounds.  price is $50. What hurts is the addtl $11 for shipping…makes each bag over $5.  When I used to find them in the stores they were $2.30 or $2.50 per bag. I called WONKA today…can’t find them anywhere.  She did a 50 miles radius search and found no retailers.  She suggested I call the Wal-mart I shop at and ask them to order them in for me. I think I will try that…otherwise, I will order the 9 pound case AGAIN.  I have done that 2 times already. I have a friend that we split the order….We just ration them out…lasts several months!

  19. I did just find it at groovy candy (or candies).  They sell it by the 12 oz bag or by case.

  20. This is the only candy that I crave year-round.  I’m always excited for Valentine’s Day just for the Gobstopper Hearts.  They’re just the perfect shape for the mouth.  Sadly though, this year I can’t find them anywhere.  I’ve tried every store I can think of.  I’m about ready to buy a case online to keep me satisfied for the next six months to a year if I can ration them.

  24. Just wanted to let everyone know these seem to be back this year. I just bought 2 bags at Target. The price seems to have gone up, they are now about $2.50 a bag (2 for 5 deal)
