Ferrero Mon Cheri

The companion product to the Ferrero Rocher is the Mon Cheri. For a long time I though these had something to do with cherries, so I avoided them. But it turns out that only the European versions are cherry ... the American ones are simply a milk chocolate shell over a whole hazelnut surrounded by hazelnut paste and crushed hazelnuts.

image

These little morsels are the same size and shape as Ferrero’s devious little Pocket Coffee (well, the little lines on the top of the chocolate are diagonal on the Pocket Coffee).

imageDuring Valentine’s Mon Cheri are sold in all sorts of different heart shaped boxes but still not as prevalent as the Ferrero Rocher. But come on, the name alone means it doesn’t need special packaging! I did see a few assortments at the drug store that included Mon Cheri, Raphaello (an almond paste with crushed almonds in a cookie sphere covered with coconut and white chocolate) and, of course, Rochers.

I’m not quite as keen on these as I am on the Rochers, probably because it’s milk chocolate. If anything, they’re a milk chocolate version of Perugina’s Baci.

However, create a heart shaped box with a mix of these, Pocket Coffee and Rochers ... now we’re talking!

Note: though these are very high in calories and fat (44% of your RDA of saturated fat in every serving!) they also have 9% of your RDA of calcium and 5% of your RDA of iron.

UPDATE 2/15/2011: For those of you who miss the discontinued Ferrero Mon Cheri in the United States.

In Europe there is a candy made by Ferrero called Kusschen that is basically the same thing. They’re available in both milk and dark chocolate versions. See my update on this here with the review of a selection of Ferrero dark chocolate items, including the cherry version of the Mon Cheri.

  2. Interesting… when I lived in Germany, the Mon Cheri candies I had were filled with a liqueur.  And if memory serves me correctly, some with cherries.  It’s amazing how things change once the cross the pond.

  3. I’m only familiar with the cherry version of these candies, which are absolutely vile and inedible—they are probably one of the nastiest candies I’ve ever tried, and I’ll eat anything.  I would never have dreamed of purchasing them because I presumed they were all the same.  I’ve only ever gotten them in the US so there are theoretically stores selling the European versions here.

  5. I haven’t read much of the blog yet, but I don’t think anyone has mentioned or knows about Germandeli.com They have the German version of mon cheri filled with cherries and brandy.

They were one of my favorite candies growing up in Germany and attending Kindergarden for 3 yrs.

    http://www.germandeli.com/moncheri1.html

But the reason you’ll most likely find them out of stock is either they’re sold out or it is the summer, and they don’t ship them because the hot weather will evaporate the brandy filling. I have gotten them at a local German store here in MI for around $25 for the 25 pack. A little more tart than I remember, being 5 yrs old at the time.

  11. I recently received a birthday package from my best friend in Germany.  These Ferrero’s Mon Cheri are limited edition and do have the cherry with cherry liquor in them.  She was a foreign exchange student in high school.  These have long since been my favorite treat, but are only available after September until Valentines.

I’ve been looking for the Mon Cheri hazelnut chocolate’s for a long time.  I was afraid they had stopped making them.  I don’t know how I’ll survive without them.  They were my guilty pleasure.  I’ve always looked forward to Valentine and Christmas so I could buy large boxes.  I’ve replaced them with the Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolates but, they just don’t compare.  Any chance they’ll be available again?????

I have always bought my dad this candy every year since I can remember.  I have searched every where to find this.  If you did stop making this product please reconsider.  I miss this family tradition.  My dad doesn’t eat a lot of candy and he is not a big chocolate fan.  However he loves this candy and looks forward to it every year.  He was very disappointed this year. Please bring it back to the US.

  25. So that is why I can’t find the red packages of Mon Cheri hazelnut chocolates any more!  I ate them, gave them as gifts, etc.  I wondered where they went.  I looked up Ferrero on-line, and to contact them, you have to write them.

Please, please, everybody do it now!  I want them, also!  My favorites.  As an alternative, go to Italy (where they use hazelnuts in lots of chocolate) or buy the bags of Perugina Baci chocolates in the blue package - like you always see at Christmas.

  26. My grandfather bought these for my grandmother and me for every occasion, birthday, Valentines Day, Christmas, 4th of July, getting good grades….  When he died in 1988, my grandmother continued the tradition until she became housebound.  It made me feel close to him again.  Now she is gone and the clerks in the stores that used to carry them have never heard of them before (except for the one lady that had been there for many years).
    I want some again. /sniff

I’m a big fan of Ferrerro Roche chocolates. I received a wonderful selection of them for the winter holidays of 2008. A generous friend delivered them in-person. I’m also a big fan of amaretto and hazelnut truffles as well as sea-creature-shaped pralines. Would you be interested in participating in a candy consortium?

  34. It’s so funny to see so many people have been looking for this candy like me grin.  I use to buy them and give them out as a little piece of me.  Friends and family were impressed when I gave them a piece of Mon Cheri as a thank you or a lift them up gift.  I’ve been looking for the candy for over 5 years since I lost my brother. I use to call him the candy man, because he always carried candy in his pocket and gave it out to children—he was an educator and loved handing out candy to kids.  I’m looking for the candy so that I can leave a piece at his grave
site on special occassions.  I use to find it a CVS, but have been looking for a while and they no longer sell it.  I’m going to try the link that someone else posted on this blog.

    Thanks,

    Cheri

Last week I was visiting San Juan, PR and the supermarkets and drugstores had Mon Cheri.  They are as tasty as always,  advertised as 25th anniversary, and listed expiration dates of June, 2010, so they are still being made there.  They were listed as a product of Germany, but distributed by Ferrero, INC; Guaynabo, PR, 00968.

  64. I just received some Mon Cheri’s as an early Valentine’s day gift from my friend in Puerto Rico. I used to be able to get these at Walgreens about 5 years ago, but they are discontinued. The only place to get them is in Puerto Rico. If you know anyone that can send you some, they are extremely easy to find over there. They sell them everywhere! Right now is a fantastic time since it’s Valentine’s Day in a few days. They sell from 4-packs to large gift boxes. These are my favorite chocolates! Luckily for me, I have a lot of family in Puerto Rico and my family in Orlando visits over there often. I always make sure to give them some $ to bring me back enough for some time. I hope this helps anyone who is looking to find them. Good luck!

  68. To clear some things Mon Cherie and Ferrero Kuesschen are not the same and don’t have the same name. Mon Cherie is chocolate filled with a cherry and brandy. Ferrero Kuesschen is chocolate with hazelnut. If you would say to a German you want Mon Cherie he will give it to you also you meant the other one.
You only can buy them at germandeli, amazon or try to find local german stores under http://www.germanfoods.org/consumer/find/stores.cfm

Ana - you didn’t click through to the updated post that I linked to about Kusschen.

In the United States Mon Cheri was a different product for at least 20 years, an all chocolate & hazelnut one. It was discontinued shortly after I wrote this post 5 years ago.

The European version of Mon Cheri was and always has been a liquor cherry bonbon.

Please read the linked post for the full details.

  71. Mon Cheri cherry candies are without question a 10.  Americans have a problem; they do not taste buds, well to be fair they lack “educated” taste buds.  Liquor laws in the United States have kept many living in the USA from understanding good food.  Italian food is Americanized as is Chinese food etc.  Mon Cheri makes a cherry candy that is beyond a “7” but such things are subjective.  None the less, I find this candy to be an ultimate adult treat.  I keep some in the fridge in my home in Italy all the time and I can say that Italians love this candy.  The cherry liqueur found in the center is very similar to the original recipe the monks used while the chocolate is slightly bitter, simply perfect.  Americans need to travel to understand.  It was said by Marshall McLuhan in 1964 “...only an American can travel to Europe for 2 weeks and NOT be changed by the experience”  So true.

DN - what a lovely bunch of insulting sentiments, and then you actually mis-quoted this review.

The review was for a long-discontinued product that was sold exclusively in the United States (perhaps Canada as well).

The actual Mon Cheri you refer to, got a 9 out of 10, were purchased on one my two trips to Germany last year.

And as far as I can tell, you don’t know my background well enough to say that my limited mind is dictated by my nationality or my interaction with superior folks like you.

  73. I am afraid you are wrong.  The Cherry chocolates are still sold in Italy.  Also, I am an American living in Italy.  If you write something then be prepared to take the heat.  I have not attacked anyone specifically though you took it that way.  Its a fact that Americans for the most part do not understand better foods as we are rarely near any.  Example:  I never tasted a tomato until I got to Europe.  Yes, I bought them in the US but they are different here as they have flavor.  I eat a Mediterranean diet here as its easy to obtain.  We do not have “Natural”  or “Organic” food stores in Italy since its ALL “organic” BY LAW!  You will not find Perdue chickens that have been genetically altered as its illegal in Europe.  One will not find maggots in the trailers that carry meat to the markets as we have in the United States.  I have seen this personally.

As I stated, America has a long way to go and too many eat fast food which leads to colon cancer as Americans for the most part do not obtain fiber in their diets.  Americans DO NOT understand many foods as they will never see it in their life.  They find many foods strange and refuse to try it.  I recall the fast food vendor “Subway”.  In their menu they state to turn the sandwich in to a meal…ADD CHIPS.  They claim to be so healthy.  I love it.  Go to any checkout at a supermarket in the USA and watch what people buy for their diet.  Then tell me I am wrong.

To take such things personally is your problem as I have not attacked you nor do I have a desire to.  America has terrible laws regarding food safety and the FDA is a useless pile of bureaucratic morons.  Its not my fault that you do not appreciate a well made chocolate though I did state it is subjective.  Where I see a 10 here, you see a 7…OK its your opinion.

Have you scrolled up? Did you look at the link?

I never said that cherry version was discontinued, the post you are commenting on is the American version which was all chocolate & hazelnut. And discontinued.

This is not the forum for you to dispense your views on eating habits of Americans or Italians. (Really, the internet has plenty of places happy to host your views.) This is a candy blog. You don’t like candy, your prerogative. You don’t like this candy, go right ahead and talk about it. But try to keep your thoughts on the correct post and on topic.

Your generalizations are just that. You’ve got them, I’ve got them. But you don’t have to post every thought that comes into your head. Or do you?

  76. I too have been shopping on the internet for the hazelnut variety of the Mon Cheri chocolates since I was unable to find it in the stores anymore. My favorite candy ever. I am so sorry to hear they have been discontinued and I am wondering why. I found the Ferrero Kuesschen available online. It sounds similar in the description. I am going to try it.

  79. Still thinking about the Hazelnut Mon Cheri.  My favorite candy for many many years!  Thank you for this informative article about what happened to Mon Cheri.  I know they sold well at all the stores, it was not uncommon for them to sell out at times, no matter where I lived in the USA.  Too bad the company did not continue producing them!  I am not very interested in the cherry version, it was the chocolate that I loved!  I’m not a big fan of other Ferrero products like those round ball things.

  81. In Puerto Rico we only have the hazelnut version. We can not find the cherry version. I went to the store today,  February 14,2015 and brought Mon Cheri box and they are filled with a node hazelnut in the center. The box is imported from Germany under the Mon Cheri name. I wish to have the liquor cherry version but I can send our version if you want.

  88. It’s so odd that the only version of Mon Cheri® sold here in Puerto Rico is the Hazelnut one, not the cherry cordial like one. It seems that probably the cherry version wouldn’t be as popular as cherry filled chocolate or cordials are not our favorites, although hazelnut is well loved, accepted and popular locally. smile♡♥PR Mon cheri♥♡

dear “J Lee” shipping to HK would be more since PR’s main mail service is USPS, I will check the ratings and contact you back.
