Twix PB

Twix is one of the most popular candy bar brands in the country (and mighty popular in Europe, to boot). About 43 million are sold each year (source). There are quite a few different versions and limited editions that have come and gone over the years.

imageTwix recently released the new Twix PB ... this new product replaces the Peanut Butter Twix (shown) that has been around on and off since 1983. I contacted Mars regarding this change.

It was kind of an odd process. I submitted an email through the Contact page on the Twix website and two days later I got an email (referencing Peanut Butter M&Ms, which really confused me, because if I asked a question about PB M&Ms, it had to be over a year ago when I was trying to find out if they still made Crispy in the States) with a reference number and their toll free hotline. I called the number and gave them the number and they confirmed that there will be no more Peanut Butter Twix once supplies currently in stores and warehouses run out. (This would be the appropriate time to pick up a box at your local grocer when they go on sale for three for a dollar and then sell them for $2 each on eBay.)

The only difference between these two products is the cookie in the center. The original Peanut Butter Twix has a vanilla cookie (like the regular Twix) while the new PB Twix has a chocolate cookie (like the Limited Edition Twix Triple Chocolate).

This is how I feel about this bar ... it’s trying too hard.

I got a hold of the classic Peanut Butter Twix and did a side by side comparison.

I like the Peanut Butter Twix, not a lot, but enough to finish the bar on hand. The peanut butter is definitely the main attraction here. The bar isn’t very sweet and the cookie gives it a nice texture without doing much else. The chocolate, well, keeps things together.

image

The Twix looks the same from the outside. The cookie isn’t quite as crispy and satisfyingly crunchy. The peanut butter seems to be lost in the Hydrox-style cookie (no, not Oreo, I’m saying Hydrox for a reason). It all tastes like bad frosting. Not like peanut butter, not like chocolate. It has a nice salty balance and isn’t too sweet, but it just doesn’t have much going for it as a candy. I hate to say it, but when I eat this, the word that comes to mind is unctuous. I mean this in both senses of the word ... it’s kind of oily and it’s also kind of insincere and smug.

Now, if you’re a Twix fan, you’ll probably want to ignore everything I’ve written here. I’ve never actually cared much for Twix. Sometimes I’ll eat a miniature as a reminder to myself that I really don’t like them. I don’t know why. All the elements seem like a good idea. Is it just me, or do Twix always become a melted mess in your fingers too? I don’t have that problem with most other bars.

If you’re a fan of the traditional (and you should really try this one before you go getting in an uproar) then you should probably call Mars or send them an email to let them know how you feel.

  1. I loved the original Twix Peanut Butter.  For me, it was a nice dessert or pick-me-up, that wasn’t going to be too heavy.  (The caramel version is nice, but is a bit too sweet for me.)
I especially liked picking up ‘lunch packs’ which had just one cookie per wrapper, and sold in a package of like 12.  Just about perfect.

So I tried the new Twix PB.  In two words, here’s my review.  It sucked.  The cookie wasn’t hydrox quality…it was worse.  Maybe ‘no-name brand sold for a buck in the grocery story’ quality.  And it gave the whole thing a rather unpleasant smell.  I couldn’t even eat the peanut butter off the top, because the smell had infused itself into it.

My rating would be clear down to a 3.

  2. I’ve never been a big Twix fan myself, so I haven’t bothered to try these. My roommate is *utterly* addicted to these though.

  3. The chocolate “cookie” is definitely not the highlight of these.  The huge amount of creamy peanut butter is pretty good though.

Cat & Justin - I’m glad to hear from Twix fans that the chocolate cookie part is just substandard here.

Sera - did your roommate say anything about the changeover?

  5. I have just recently tried both the Twix PB and the Twix Triple Chocolate.  I liked the Twix PB at first because it reminded me of those Reese’s Cookies…but it made me want one of those even more so that I didn’t have to have a pale reminder.  I feel the Twix Triple Chocolate has promise however, if you like chocolate cookie vs vanilla.  I would buy it again.

  6. Wasn’t the ‘original’ peanut butter Twix discontinued once before? There was a long period when I couldn’t find it in stores (i greatly preferred it over the caramel Twix). A few weeks ago I gave the Twix PB a try, and my review is even shorter than Cat Skyfire: “yuck.” I’m sad to learn that the good pb twix has been discontinued in favor of this.

(And yes, they always become a melted mess for me, too.)

  7. Ah, the “lunch packs.”  I have fond memories of those.  As for the new PB Twix, it’s an utter disappointment.  The chocolate cookie was not up to par and is too sweet.  And did anybody else notice the different texture of the chocolate coating?  Mine seemed kind of, I dunno, gummy?

  8. Now, see, here’s what happened: they had the original and peanut butter together in the ‘80s, and in the early ‘90s, added cookies ‘n creme and chocolate fudge flavors (both quite tasty) to their roster, and a few years later, pulled everything but original.  Then, in the late ‘90s, they finally brought back peanut butter.

I’ve always been a fan of the original peanut butter Twix.  These are just terrible.

  11. I find PB Twix quite wondeful. They are less sweet than the average candy bar, the chocolate cookie is wonderfully crispy, and peanut butter filling meltingly smooth. All things considered, this is the best new candy bar introduction in many years (and one of the few variations on a classic which is actually good—for example, every variant on a Reese’s peanut butter cup is inedible.)

  12. I thought that TwixPB was peanut butter Twix with a different packaging, since they’ve changed the look once before.  I was extremely disappointed when I bit into it and thought something had soured in my mouth.  I looked down and it was a dark chocolate bar that tasted like stale brownies.  I just finished writing the Mars co. and hope to hear from them soon.  I want the peanut butter Twix back.  There was nothing wrong with it before so why do they keep changing it and worst of all they tricked us.  There was no advertising about this chocolate peanut buttered want-a-be candy bar.  To this day I still can’t find anything about the bar from the company even on Twix.com they only have peanut butter Twix along side regular Twix with caramel.  Peanut Butter Twix was my favorite candy bar and now it’s gone.  What to do?  There’s nothing like it Reeses is close but it doesn’t have that shortbread cookie crunch.  Maybe if enough of us complain to the company they will redistribute them.  Let’s try that!

  14. A couple times a week I try to buy a Twix bar for my co-workers.  IT really does seam to let us sit back and relax for a moment in-between all of our meetings.  ( which we all can appreciate ) Is that weird of us to do that?  Does anyone else share this ritual that we do at our jobs?

Talk to all of you soon,

  19. I also loved the Peanut Butter Twix - especially when I was pregnant.  It was an elusive candy bar so whenever I spotted one I would immediately grab 2 or 3, since I knew it might be a while before I would find another one.  When pregnant, I ate one every day.  I’m trying to get pregnant again, and I dread the thought of having unfulfillable cravings for Peanut Butter Twix.  I have written to Mars using a link given above, begging them to bring back the old version and promising them at least 9 months of solid sales.  PB Twix sucks.

  20. I never tried the original PB Twix but this new one is great. It reminds me of the Reeses Cookies although those are hard to beat. I do notice some funky flavor and texture to the cookie portion of the PB Twix but can get over that since I LOVE pb & chocolate mix.

Comment by Eli on 7/09/08 at 10:54 am #
  21. Yah I agree with most reviews here. The new Twix PB is an abomination. I used to get the old “classic” PB Twix from my vending machine at work and I think I would single handedly take down every one. I was excited when I saw the new Twix PB, but read that it now has a chocolate cookie. I bought it anyway, tried it and is sucked. ‘Nuff said.

  22. I LOVE the NEW Twix PB.  I didn’t care for Twix, but tried this one with chocolate cookie and peanut butter.  It is very good—not too sweet and it has a good peanut butter taste.  The chocolate cookie is just fine.  If you are not a regular Twix eater—these may be just fine for you.

  23. I love the new Twix PB, but I can rarely find them.  I look in every grocery store, drugstore, and convenience store I visit.  Actually haven’t been able to find one in a few months!

  24. WHAT?!  They’re discontinued?!  Is that why I can’t find them anymore?!  Nooooo!

I used to love the Peanut Butter Twix!  I spent a good deal of my lunch money on ‘em during high school.  :(  I dislike the taste of the chocolate cookie in the new version.  YUCK!

  31. The new PB Twix w/the chocolate cookie sucks!  The old peanut butter twix was my favorite candy bar of all time and I don’t understand why they changed it.  I wrote to them but they never responded and that was months ago. I just want the old one back! Please!!

But like all the others you are WWWRRROOONNNGGG! But let me put in my vote BRING THE OLD ONE BACK! There is something to the old stuff. The car company’s got a clue they are bringing all the old look’s back to the newer car’s. They got the hint. Hollywood got the hint look at all the old film’s they are making. Don’t be the last ones to get it come one get it together.  LOVE YA MEAN IT!

  38. Are they trying to pull a New Coke-Classic Coke trick on us…..Bring out a foul tasting, hideous new version of something that you know people loved the way it was just to get them to want the original more and then go ape and buy it by the case when you re-release it as a classic??  So not necessary…ah well I guess I’ll be settling for peanut butter M&M’s.

  39. The original twix PB was the best.  This new one is well nasty to much chocolate messed it up.  I was able to get a 24ct box on amazon, but after the PB recall you cant do that, but you can sign up so when it’s available again you can get them.

  42. It’s been so long that I had the original peanut butter twix I can barely remember what it tastes like. But I do remember it was one of my favorites. I was disappointed too when I couldn’t find it anymore. When I saw the new one out, talk about excited. I wasn’t sure at first about it, but I do like it. Now the problem is where to find it. I can only find single bars at 7/eleven. I want to find the bag fulls!

Comment by Angie on 1/19/10 at 12:23 pm #
  43. Some of these Twix PB’s just showed up in the breakroom here and work. I like a Twix Peanut Butter, haven’t had one in years! So I pick it up, ignoring the garish Doritos-esque wrapper and take a big crunchy bite.

What a second, what’s that in my mouth, an odd sensation. Hard packed mud pie? No, it’s dirty potting soil. I managed to finish the bite, but I screamed out at the injustice of changing something that I was happy with. Oh you corporate weasels.

“Trying to hard” is the truth, they didn’t need to change the cookie to make it “better”. As come-and -go as the Twix Peanut Butter is, it’s like a McRib, we know it’s getting cancelled, so give us what we want until it’s gone.

  44. I’m not a fan of peanut butter, but was pleasantly surprised with the “ORIGINAL” peanut butter Twix. It became one of my favorite candy bars, then all of a sudden it seemed as if they were replaced with those nasty hard chocolate cookie PB twix .... GROSS ... My boyfriend picked one up for me by mistake, thinking it was the original. I told him don’t EVER bring me one of those again…. All I have to say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it .... ORIGINAL PB TWIX .... PLEASE BRING IT BACK !!!

  47. I agree COMPLETELY: BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL PB TWIX!! THE CHOCOLATE COOKIE = DISGUSTING!!!

I’m so happy I’m not alone on this! Doesn’t Mars, Inc. listen to what the people want?? Every time I’m at the grocery store and I glance at that gross PB Twix I just wish it was normal. Cause if it was normal I would buy like 5 of them!! But no..

Why did they try to fix something that wasn’t broke? IT WAS PERFECT!!!

  48. I remember the original PB in the 80’s. What I liked was that the peanut butter was more like the Reeses’ Cup peanut butter. The new is creamy, like the cheap PB filled chocolate easter eggs.  I like peanut butter in a bar to be on the drier side. Leave creamy for caramel.

  49. I was really sick today but finally got up the courage to eat after my dr. said I wouldn’t be having anymore nausea, so my mom was nice enough to go into town and get me some goodies. But she also picked me up a Twix bar, since she knows I LOVE the regular ones! I was so excited, but as she handed it to me I realized the label was a tiny bit different. I wondered what “Pb” meant before I realized, it must have peanut butter in it. I was immediately gutted and the idea of it just seemed gross to me. The caramel is what makes a Twix bar.. well, a Twix bar. Sure enough, I was right and even though I just tried one now that I’m feeling a lot better I just can’t eat them. I can’t. I’m sending her out for a regular Twix bar tomorrow cause I got a craving now!
P.s. Shame on Twix for their subtle labeling.

  51. I remember the original Peanut Butter Twix.  I used to eat them along with the Caramel Twix.  I loved how the combination tasted, taking a bite of one and then, the other.  I have tried the new Twix PB and…well, it’s not as terrible as many have said, but it’s no where near as good as the original Peanut Butter Twix was.  The chocolate cookie just doesn’t do it justice, but the original cookie was much better.  Someone should start a protest and demand Mars to bring back the original Peanut Butter Twix.  They may not listen to a few people.  But, there are safety in numbers and, if enough people demand the original ones, they’ll have to supply or they’ll go out of business.

  55. I don’t like regular Twix but the original peanut butter Twix was the best candy bar I’ve ever had. I don’t eat many candy bars but those rocked. The new ones with the chocolate cookie are horrible. Horrible. Why would they do this?  I keep thinking that it was a marketing thing to bring new interest but like new Coke, ya gotta go back to the original.

I still remember biting in to the brown cookie for the first time believing it was the vanilla cookie. I felt so betrayed. It has been so hard to trust anyone or any food since this happened. I have also contacted Mars via email 3 times, twitter several times and facebook as well. You all are not alone. Keep fighting the good fight fellow white cookie lovers!

    This makes me sad.
