Starburst GummiBursts

In that grand shipment of goodies from Mars last month I also got a box of these, Starburst GummiBursts.

DSC09665br

They’re a new product hitting the shelves in the US,  described as Liquid Filled Gummies. They come in four flavors: Strawberry, Cherry, Orange & Lemon.

The package also boasts that they have Real Fruit Juice! and Great Fruit Taste(r).

I thought the package was a little light at only 1.5 ounces (a package of Skittles or Starburst are over 2 ounces for the same price). But then again, with the light caloric density, that makes a package only 140 calories.

DSC09676rb

Inside the little medallions are a little larger around than a nickel.

Each gummi has the juicy S on it and beneath that little dome of the letter lurks the burst. Biting into the firm gummi, there is definitely a thick flavored syrup center.

The gummi texture isn’t as rubbery as some, it doesn’t have that bounce.

The liquid is thick and tangy, but pretty much the same as the gummi, but in a different texture. The flavors, well, they’re the same as the Starburst chews.

At first the goo center squicked me out, but I got used to it. But it never really did much for me. They’re a “moister” feeling gummi, but that solves a problem I didn’t really have. The flavors in the package, though consistent with what’s in a regular Starburst Chews package, just don’t seem to do much for me. They’re not quite tangy enough to get my salivary glands going, they’re just plain ordinary. Of course if one of my initials was S, I’d probably be more partial to these.

These were announced by Mars early this year, but I’ve not seen them on store shelves and can’t seem to find them anywhere online.

The package says that they’re gluten free. They do contain gelatin (of indeterminate origin) and are unsuitable for vegans.

Peg - that’s funny, I was just playing with some the other night and had to open two bags because my “random” assortment didn’t include any lemon. (Regular Starburst used to be random but now have definite equal ratios for each flavor.)

Sam - I had a similar feeling about liquid filled gum ... which is kind of odd because I don’t think anyone has a problem with dry fillings.

anonymous - thanks for the heads up! Candy Warehouse and I have an agreement for photos, so it’s all in the clear! (Doing candy photos on the side is one of my secrets to getting a hold of candy before it hits the market.)

Just had some of these in the Sour variety - Sour Strawberry, Watermelon, Green Apple, and Orange Tangerine.  They have that typical sour sanding sugar on the outside, otherwise the shape and appearance is the same.

Pretty good, especially since I tend to favor sour candies.  However, is anyone sick of companies sticking a little bit of apple juice (it’s always apple or pear - presumably the cheapest?) in something and making a big deal out of it being made with “real fruit”?

  26. I am a candy person. I went to Toys ‘R’ Us and bought these. I liked them, but personally I would only reccomend it to those who aren’t in the mood for sour and those who like gushers.

  33. Ok… I bought a pack yesterday and something was wrong with one of them. The majority tasted ok- my comments echo those of the folks above. A nice gummi product. But one of the candies… Something was really wrong with it. I contacted the FDA and filed a complaint, I contacted the company and they are sending me an envelope to mail back to them the unused portion of Gummies.
Here is what I wrote to them:
    —-
I bought a pack of these Starburst GummiBursts Liquid Filled Gummies today.
As I bit into one of them, the taste was terrible- a chemical-like taste that made me gag and spit- I think there is really something wrong with this candy. It’s not just that the flavor was bad- this tasted like- what?
Bleach? Ammonia? I mean- I have never tried Bleach, Ammonia, or nail polish- but to me this was like… Acetone?
It was disgusting. I spit it out.
I have the packaging, the bitten gummy, and the remaining few. Most of the package was fine- but when I got to this one… My tongue still hurts.
    Really.

    The package says on it:
    Starburst GummiBursts Liquid Filled Gummies
    25 OCT 10 006
    943 GP5FP 0241
(It may be GPSFP- that may be the number 5 or the letter S- I can’t tell on the wrapper.)

    —-
Hope you do NOT have this experience, but I wanted to share it with you all.

  34. I had this candy once before. It was smaller and didn’t last as long the other candies I enjoyed. When I gave my 2 (almost 3) year old brother some, my mom and I suspected that it would be a soft gummy. What we didn’t realize at first is that the gummy was harder to chew and thicker than expected. My little brother almost CHOKED on one of those things and my mom pulled over the car to help. Overall, I’ve had better candy. This candy is NOT recommended for little kids!

  35. I have been addicted to this candy since the first time
time I tasted them! I have to make myself not buy them
every day and only buy the larger bag from CVS as a treat.
I’ve always loved gummy candy and this is the best by far!
They always cheer me up and are perfect for the movies! LOVE THEM!

  36. I purchased these candies about a week ago. They made me really sick! I was nauseous and ached all over the next few days. My fingers were swollen and aching and still ache now ! My daughter and her husband ate them also. They got really sick also. I called the company as the previous blogger did and they told me the same thing, mail them back to Star Bursts and they would send me a coupon.

Comment by Eletha on 9/09/10 at 4:02 am #
  37. Yes- i was the poster above who returned them. And- oh the irony- I, too, got free certificate for more of them. Sorry- but something that was so nasty… I don’t want a free cupon for more! Doh!

  38. Me and my husband had some the other day. Same thing as the above comment. Tasted like chemicals. My mouth was numb for 3 hours. We went to the ER to see if they could find anything out about them, Nothing..

Starburst company said they have NEVER heard of such a thing and want us to mail them in for a coupon. We are searching farther into this. Currently getting a hold of the Heath Department to see what they have to say.

  39. Just had a similar problem.  I enjoyed several pieces.  About the 10th piece tasted horrible.  My tongue felt like I had put hot coffee on it.  There is a little blister where the filling had touched my tongue.  Not sure what it was, but it sure felt like a chemical burn.  Going to call the company in the morning.  Too bad I swallowed the darn thing in my surprise.

  40. Ok, I’m a grandmother and I love these candies. So does my husband.  What a surprise they are. I bought them for my 5 year old grandson.  He didn’t like them so when he went home we tried them.  We both fell in love with them.  I just hope you will keep making these. Sometimes the things I like the most are the ones that get discontinued.  Someone mentioned the red ones not being as good as the others.  That, I’m sorry to say, is true but they aren’t awful or inedible.  Just not quite as tasty. Keep them coming please.

  42. I buys these ALL the time…especially @ work. My boss ALWAYS steals them and the next day I have to go back to Circle K and buy another bag. I have NOT had any strange chemical versions of this candy as of yet…altho before I purchase a bag I admit I do squeeze the bag to see if they are fresh. If they slide around fairly easily then I buy them. If they kinda clump together & feel alittle “gummier” than normal then I do NOT purchase them. Sometimes I will pass up two or three bags before I find the right one. Yes, I am neurotic about my candy! HA.

  45. I just got these from Walgreens, and like them. One thing that I don’t like about them, however, (and this could be just this batch/my bag) is that the gummies are really sticky on the outside. At first I thought they were just leaky, but that’s not it. Anyway, the stickiness makes them kind of messy; I wish their outside was more like gummi life savers or gummi bears.

Comment by Barbara on 4/11/14 at 5:08 pm #
  46. Wringley jr, you need to come out with the pink starburst gummibursts, because we all know that’s the all time best flavor. Please and thank you?
