Skittles Fizzl’d Fruits

Skittles Fizzl'd FruitsBack in October I heard that Wrigley’s was introducing some new Skittles. These weren’t just new flavors, they were going to be a completely new way to experience the chewy fruit-flavored candy lentils.

Skittles Fizzl’d Fruits are billed as Fizzling fun for your mouth. As you can imagine from the name, they’re Skittles with a foaming, fizzy component.

The package is cobalt blue and holds the same amount as the Sour Skittles, 1.8 ounces (the regular flavors are 2.17 ounces). I couldn’t wait to find them in stores locally, so when I saw a box of them posted on eBay, I bought them right away.

From the outside of the package they looked like Sour Skittles, which of course gets my mouth watering immediately. The images show a softly sanded set of Skittles, my guess was this was the fizzing part.

This sort of fizzing reaction is the same as AlkaSeltzer or other effervescent tablets. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is mixed with an acidic agent, in this case citric acid. When it’s dry, nothing happens but when water (or saliva) wets it, they begin a reaction that results in carbon dioxide (the air) and sodium citrate (an alkaline salt with a tangy flavor that works as a mild antacid).

I took one Skittle and carefully put a drop of water on it and sure enough as the water wicked around the whole candy the surface started to bubble slightly. It looked like it was being deep fried, or like putting a strawberry in a glass of champagne. It’s not like the whole thing got covered in scrubbing bubbles nor would a whole bowl of them create a “snap, crackle, pop” but it’s still a remarkable little chemistry demonstration.

Skittles Fizzl'd Fruits

The flavors are Berry Punch, Melon Berry, Raspberry, Strawberry and Wild Cherry. If this set of flavors sounds familiar, yes, it’s the same as Wild Berry Skittles.

They smell softly sweet with a light floral note, but nothing that really hints at the experience to come.

Skittles Fizzl'd Fruits

They are strange! I can say right now they are not for me, but they are definitely intriguing.

I was expecting the caustic and biting sour coating when I popped two of the Melon Berry flavor in my mouth, and yes, there was a sour tingle, but then there was a fizz. It’s not a carbonation fizz, it’s more like putting an Alka Seltzer tablet on your tongue. The foaming is soft and has small bubbles which dissipate quickly, especially when I chewed up the candy. I didn’t care much for the melon berry flavor as it was, so the additional component was weird and slightly metallic.

Skittles Fizzl'd FruitsThe Raspberry went nicely, the sour bite was less noticeable and the foam seemed to support the floral flavors. The coating, I was noticing, has a medicinal mineral salt flavor to it, like eating antacids.

Berry Punch had a kind of bubble gum note to it, so the bubbly coating fit right in. It reminded me of a cheap soda from my childhood, in the best way possible.

Strawberry was much more tangy than the one found in the regular mix and combined well with the fizzling.

Wild Cherry was a strange combination of foreign flavors, it simply put, an effervescent cough drop. It had all the worst aftertastes for me, a mid-tone metallic note and then the lingering cherry and bitter red dye afterglow.

As I mentioned earlier, they’re just not for me. I’m not much for effervescence; the caustic burps after just aren’t worth the tongue tingling. The mineral aftertaste is also a bit disconcerting for me, but I know it’s completely benign. Finally, I’m not that keen on the name. They’re using the Wild Berry mix so seems like they could have gone for Bubbly Berry instead of Fizzl’d Fruits since Fruits is the name of the classic flavor mix. I also ate three bags of these over the past five days and found that the fizzy coating was inconsistent. Sometimes it was fizzy but flavorless, other times it was a perfect blend of tangy and foamy.

I know that kids like to snort the sour powder from Sour Skittles, but this would be a very bad idea ... I give it about 11 days before videos start showing up on youtube of kids doing it. Skittles are now gelatin-free and gluten-free. They’re also no nuts and vegan if you’re the kind who will eat artificial stuff. Not Kosher.

Ebidebby also has a review of them today.

Kim - I have no idea WHY anyone would snort anything ... but hey, they’re kids. Whaddayagonna do?

Steve - I know that SoCal is last to get stuff usually, so I ordered them. I know that some other photos of them have shown up on Flickr, so they’re definitely in stores in some parts of the country. (Walgreen’s was one place I heard they’re at.)

  8. I’m sure I’ll wind up buying a bag when I see one, because these sound like an experience that is so creepy and unsettling, it needs to be tried.  I haven’t seen them yet at Walgreen’s or CVS, but I’m sure they’ll show up soon.

They remind me of Zots, those awful hard candy filled with fizzling spittle I used to get from the ice cream man.

  9. I love the idea of active candy: don’t just sit there like a victim in my mouth, you crumb of sugar, DO SOMETHING! Well, we’re always going to like the thing the candy decides to do, but that doesn’t mean the candy doesn’t have a right to fully experience its candy essence. And given that our tendency is to bite, chew, and swallow the candy, it is not surprising that when candy rises up and realizes its own sweet power, it might not be so kind to our tender mouths and stomachs…

  13. Happened to see these today at the checkout line at WalMart.  I love fizzy candies, but these were not the greatest.  Not awful, but I probably wouldn’t buy them again.  Fun to try once though!  The fizz was pretty bubbly, but I didn’t like the flavors all that much. I like the Sour Skittles better.

  15. These were okay. I don’t normally go for ‘fizzy, pop rock-y,’ reaction type candies because, to be honest, they terrified me when I was little. I saw these at Walmart and thought, ‘cool, these look different’ and expected pop rock like feel when I tasted them. I did not expect them to be sour, and upon initial taste, I was incredibly disapointed (I don’t like sour candies normally), but they were nice once I started chewing. The darker colored flavors weren’t too good, thought the red and pink were decent…
The tingy sensation seemed overrated, and after the skittle were gone, I tried the ‘fizz’ by itself and now I have a cut or two in my mouth, not to mention the sour taste. I put the last bits of fizz and a skittle in a cup and spit at them(gross, I know) and I have to admit that the reaction was interesting to watch, if nothing else. I honestly enjoyed them this time (despite giving me heartburn) but never again will I buy them, unless it is for a sience project raspberry.

ColdFusion - Kosher isn’t just about ingredients. It’s not Kosher unless the facility has been inspected and certified by a rabbinical authority. Some folks are fine with reading ingredients, other folks want to know that Kosher cooking principals have been followed, especially concerning shared equipment.

  19. I don’t know if it was just the package I had, but there’s something quite salty about the initial taste of these candies (probably the foaming reaction). They were, to say the least, a huge disappointment, as the candy taste never quite came through the salty tones.

  23. Disgusting!  It tastes SALTY!!!???!!!

It doesn’t fizz like pop rocks, it’s just an annoying tingle.

The nasty salty/chemical aftertaste remains long after the candy is gone.

Bicarbonate of soda?  Didn’t Grandma use that for indigestion.  She mixed bicarbonate of soda and water and drank it down.  It made her burp and got rid of her heartburn.

Skittles puts it in their candy?

    Don’t waste your money.

  26. I did not like the Fizzled Skittles at all. I am sad that they are not what I expected. It has a salty aftertaste and it gave me a belly ache. Some people might like it, but I did not. =*( If only the skittles would not have the salty taste then I’m sure they would’ve been amazing like all the other kinds of skittles.

I love skittles and have tried all of the different types multiple times since i was a young child. this is the first time i wish i didn’t try the cool new skittles. They seriously taste like hot garbage, and the tingling is uncomfortable, kind of like going to the dentist and tasting some of the nasty junk they use on your teeth. 53. I read through all the posts above and I disagree with almost all of them.  I love the fizzl’d fruits. The initial taste is nice and sour and quickly goes sweet as they dissolve(fizz).

I find the candies themselves soften a little faster than the regular skittles but I’m fine with that.  I don’t eat a lot of candy but I’m easily going through two regular sized bags a week.  I also have to jump on the bandwagon and say they are VERY ADDICTIVE.  For some reason I find it really hard to stop eating them once I’ve started.  The first time I tried them the bag was gone before I realized it.

  56. At first, I thought the “fizzy-ness” wasn’t very enjoyable, considering the slight salty taste and also giving me a slight upset stomach. The slight tummy ache went away quickly. I bought a bag full of little packets (give-away-this-halloween size packets), but considering I love the skittle line so much, to keep the whole bag for myself. I went through a couple more packets, finding them more and more enjoyable after the previous packet I finished. As of now, I completely LOVE these skittles. I find the funky fruity flavors DELICIOUS, I don’t taste the saltiness of the fizz anymore, I often taste a pleasant sour tinge to them and they also no longer give me a slight tummy ache. I have to admit, I think I’m addicted to them now, and I really hope they don’t discontinue them.

  63. Never in the history of man has there been a candy so foul, so disturbed, as the fizzled skittle. If Jeffrey Dahmer was a candy, only these bite-sized atrocities would do the sickness justice.

It’s like eating a salty skittle that’s been urinated on, rolled in baking soda, and then left in the sun too long. The “fizzy” part of it barely even works. When it did, I was more inclined to think it was just my tounge boiling away in an attempt to kill itself and be spared the misery of the Fizzy Skittle.

It really does give you an upset stomach, and it really does leave an aftertaste of medicine in your mouth. If you eat all the dust out of the bottom of the pack at one time (like I love to do with sour skittles), you’ll seriously gag, and if you’ve got a weak stomach, it’s very possible you’ll projectile vomit.

This candy is amazing though, for one reason: It’s a freak. Normally, candy like this never gets out of the lab. I mean, you taste it, and your brain kicks you in the mouth and goes “Holy cow, this is not meant for human consumption!”

The mind recoils in horror… The bowels turn to ice…

You don’t get to see that very often. Every day candy companies whip up another dozen experimental frankensteins… Mackrel flavored ice-cream, or vegetable flavored jellybeans (Tomato, Broccoli, SQUASH <gag>), or chocolate candy bars stuffed with bacon and peanuts…

Those things really have been made, but you never got to experience the magnitude of the GOD-AWFUL yourself, because the companies were smart enough to hire a test group that would, appropriately, deem the products revolting and UNFIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

Now’s your chance! Superweird gross-out candy from the Planet X, here for a limited time! Get it while you can! Because no way in hell are these things going to be around long.

These, and the new Sour Patch Kids that have MENTHOL in them. BLECCCCHHHHH. I hope whoever’s responsible has been fired and is living in a box on skid row by now.

Yes. This candy is SO bad, that I truly wish for the executive that green-lighted it to be a homeless crackhead now. I hope all his teeth have fallen out and his only friend is a mangy old three legged dog named “General Barkus”.

Yes. They’re THAT bad. But you NEED to try them, so that you may fully know the true capacity of human suffering and better yourself. It will be a story you tell your grandkids someday, the way YOUR grandparents told you about the horrors of World War II.

“Yes, Jimmy. I was alive for the Fizzled Skittle. And as much as I wanted to lie down, to quit, to just give up and die… I didn’t. I ATE THEM. AND I *LIVED*.”

Jimmy <cries in appreciation of gran-gran’s noble sacrifice>

  65. So freaking disgusting.  I bought these in the bargain bin at my local grocery store.  They weren’t even worth the 15 cents I paid for them, except maybe for the humor I got from finding the comments on this blog.  Everything is true, it’s like sucking on a salty Alka Seltzer.  If you think chewing the thing from the start will help, it won’t.  It just tastes like a big piece of chewy, foamy, salt….  Sucking on them and then chewing them is really the only way to go if you want maximum enjoyment (which ranks about a .5 out of 10).  There is after all a delicious Skittle somewhere in there but you have to go through hell to get to it.

I recently had quite the scare with these lil devil candies,  without me knowing I had over 5 cuts on my tongue and one in my deep cheek (from letting it fizz on the side of my mouth)  My mouth bled for over 2 hours and I originally thought I had cut my throat from the amount of spit that I would spit out, I have been deep cut before and the blood coming out of my mouth was pure blood (no spit/mucus)  I was scared, I called my boss to find a replacment but after about another 30mins of bleeding and constant water drinking the blood went away.  I originally went to the Doctor in a panic, got blood tests done and even getting my Esophagus checked.  The following day I repeated the skittles (I could not find fizz so I settle with double sour) to calm my nerves about possible cancers/diseases/abnormalities well with no surprise I was spitting out blood, not as much as the fizzl’d but enough to know that theres something in skittles that we should be eating.  Hopefully enough people can read this in time.  Oh and just so everyone knows,  I only ate one pack of the Fizzl’d skittles.

  67. I just had a bag of these which I’m afraid will be my last. I like these skittles I really do they just taste… different but I think they’re being pulled out or discontinued because I haven’t seen them anywhere at gas stations or WalMart all I see are the originals and those gastly blenders which I would rather just eat two original at once they are not worth the money or the knowing of what a moth ball tastes like. Anyways I like the fizzies but I just licked the bottom of the bag and It scared me. I spat out the fizz and wondered how something horrible could come out of a bag of something that I thought was good. Good candy I think but don’t lick the bottom of the bag! Yee be warned… oh and by the way again the blenders aren’t worth the dollar I paid! P.S sorry for saying something about the blenders they’re brand-new so theres no where else to go!

  69. they really are weird, but i found that theyre really good if you just suck on them (thats what she said) until the coating is off then chew em up, i do that with skittles anyways so it worked for me

  72. I miss this flavour so much!! The purple bag (wild berry) has always been my favourite skittles mix, and with the fizzy bonus on the flavours… it made them even better! I would still be buying this kind if it was sold! lol.

Not a fan of the downright sour kind as much… i like the mildness that this kind had.
