Mint Chocolate M&Ms

Mint M&MsOne of M&Ms Holiday Mixes isn’t just a color shift in the regular offering. It’s the Mint Chocolate M&Ms, which aren’t available during any of the other special editions for other holidays like Easter or Halloween.

I haven’t had these in years, as I used to find them to be dangerously addictive and for the past few years I’ve tried to concentrate on candies that were new to me.

But this year I was happy to hear that they were back and thought it was high time that I had some again and of course document there here so fans could squee with delight. (Also, they were on sale, so I bought this bag and a bag of the Holiday Mix Almond M&Ms, which I ate in two days.)

The lentils come in three colors: White, Green and Red.

I pulled out a few regular M&Ms as a comparison (on the left) for the photo because I thought the green and red were actually a different shade. And so they are!

It’s tempting to think that these are just minted Milk Chocolate M&Ms, but they’re a little different in several ways.

  • Size: they’re bigger. Well, most of them are bigger. There are a few that are the same size as regular M&Ms. But they’re not even all the same size.
  •

  • Colors: aren’t consistent. There are two different greens in there. Though I’m not sure if it’s on purpose or a quality control issue. They’re both pleasant looking, though I prefer the darker green.
  •

  • Shell:  the candy shell is thicker. This means it’s crunchier. I decided I really liked this feature.
  •

  • Ingredients:  list includes salt. So the milk chocolate is not only lightly peppermint, it’s also not-so-sweet.
  • Yeah, they’re really good. I love mint & chocolate and though the milk chocolate of M&Ms isn’t spectacular, it’s certainly fun to put away.

    2. Somewhere, there is a junkie version of me, sitting behind a dumpster, surrounded by the wrappers from these and Girl Scout Thin Mints, passed out from a sugar rush gone bad.  I love these.

    3. I think these are my favorite commercial Christmas candy. I’m stil not sure if I prefer the current beefed up version with larger pieces and thicker shell or the original “holidays” version that were the same size as the regular m&m;‘s with the smooth shell. I like how they are now but am sometimes nostalgic for the old ones.

    4. We have these all year round in Australia, we have the xmas wrappered version at xmas, but during the year they are in a different bag but the same thing except they are green in colour. They are one of my favourites! smile

    7. Are these the Christmas-colored version of the “Indiana Jones” M&M;‘s from earlier this year?  If so, I’m on my way to the store for a few bags!  I love M&M;‘s and I LOVED the mint crisp ones.

    9. I love mint M&Ms;, but I’m curious about the size change. They seem so bumpy and lumpy now. And I’m scared the thicker shell is going to break my teeth - it’s really hard!

    10. My first baby went on a nursing strike when I initially discovered these (and overindulged) (1997). Coincidence? Who knows! But there are no more nurslings in my house, so I can indulge all I want now…

    11. Yumm! These look good. If you like the thicker shell you should try Canadian Smarties (made by Nestle). They are basically big m&ms;with a thick shell.

    12. These are my favorite M&M;‘s by far!  They actually come in Peppermint as well…this maybe a special Wal-Mart deal because I think that is where I found those.  Anyway, I found them 2 Christmas’s ago and try to buy them up whenever they are on sale during the holidays.  I freeze them and had them last for about 6 months last year before I ran out of them.  I like to melt them in the microwave as well.  The thick shell keeps them from getting too messy.  Yum, yum!

    14. Pattie,

I think I might agree with you. I went on a hunt for these yesterday because a couple of years ago I bought some at Target and got addicted. After trying almost every drug store in NYC, I finally found one that stil had a few bags left. I was really excited, but I don’t think I like these new ones as much. One of the things I like about M&Ms;is their small size, so you can make a little go a long way. But I think I ate like 1/3 of the bag yesterday w/o realizing it, just by tasting them. And did anyone notice that f you bite the shell off, an even coat of chocolate comes with it? Like it was made in layers or something. Anyways, I think I miss the old ones as well. But I’ll give ‘em another try…I did buy a few bags, after all.

    15. I had these mint chocolate m&m;‘s for the first time this year.  i was sorry to hear that they do not have these all year.  They are great tasting and refreshing.  I am not a candy eater butI love these.
please make these available at least for all the holidays.

    16. Where can I find more of these? I bought the last bag at a Fred Meyer store and have become addicted to them. These are the best!

    17. I bought these/saw these for the first time around Christmas and loved them.  I find no fault with their size, not melting in your mouth, etc.  My only complaint is they’re not available all year.  I spent so much time looking from one store to another to no avail.  Would it be possible to make them available by mail order through out the year?

    18. “We have these all year round in Australia”...
I’m so jealous! These mint m&ms; are AWESOME! I wish they were available here all the time or at least at ALL the holidays. It would not matter to me if they were various sizes and/or colors, with thicker shells or the regular shells. My craving would be satisfied either way… just make them available!!!
      = )  please?

    19. I’ve tried the new soft coated mint m&m’s and although my husband loves these I really, really want the hard coated mint m&m’s.

    21. Comment #19 makes no sense. The 1st mint m&ms; were same sz as others & shell was as hard as other m&m varieties. But, few yrs ago they startd makin them Lgr w/a hardr shell. Unfortunately, that hasnt changed. If U like choc-mint, U may like them, but theyr not as good as they used 2b. Orig 1s melted smoothly n Ur mouth w/a much yummier choc-pepprmint flavor. I dont buy these. When I did it just made me want the orig version.

    22. I was interested in seeing this posting. I always loved the mint m&ms;, and bought extra bags at Christmas time. I’ve been scouring the stores trying to find them, and figured they’d been discontinued. I didn’t know anyone else liked them besides me!

Recently, I was waxing nostalgic to a coworker about them. She said “yuck!” since she hates anything the combines mint and chocolate (although she’s a chocoholic). Today, she came in my office triumphantly bearing a bag of what looked like mint m&m’s that she’d found at Kroger. The bag looked a little different, but I didn’t think much of it.

I just tried them now, and boy, am I disappointed. I liked the little minty lentils, but not these big ones. I don’t know why-they just don’t taste right, and the texture is nasty. I think it might be because the chocolate in m&ms; isn’t all that good, but in the small size the chocolate quality isn’t so apparent.

On the up side, I don’t have worry that I might snarf down the bag of these. In fact, I’m going to look for someone else to hand these off to…

    24. I just bought a small bag of DARK chocolate mint M&Ms;.  I’m guessing they’re new because I haven’t seen them before.  I’ll be curious to see how they taste, as I think dark chocolate is a better match for mint than milk chocolate.

    25. ThankU Rudolf! Glad 2c that some1 who loved the ORIGINAL MINT M&Ms; took the time 2tell how disappointing the new 1s r. Bigger ones r so bad that I didnt even look @ m&m xmas candy this yr. So if there were some NEW DARK choc MINT ones, I did NOT c ‘em, or an AD 4them. My family prefers DARK choc, so curious about those. But if the MARTIANS R’nt listening 2our comments about how much we miss the SMALL, MELT N UR MOUTH MINT M&MS;, have 2wonder how they’ve messed up DARK chocolate!
