Good and Fruity

It’s a candy resurrection story! Good & Fruity  has been reissued by Hershey’s after being off the market for several years (could this petition have anything to do with it?). It should be available in stores any day now.

image

Good & Fruity is the companion candy to Good & Plenty, which is a sugar-shelled licorice. Really, there’s very little that’s similar about them, though at one time Good & Fruity was a candy coated fruit licorice nib.

The current incarnation of Good & Fruity, simply put, is jelly beans. Tiny, narrow jelly beans in a box.

They’re a little different from typical jelly beans, the shell isn’t as grainy, mostly because there’s so little shell. It’s crispy and has a light cool feel on the tongue with the sweeter flavors.

Lemon  - tart, but not quite lemony.
Lime  - a good mix of sour and lime essence.
Cherry  - sort of mellow, pretty standard black cherry flavor
Orange  - tangy and with a very strong orange zest component. A really good orange jelly bean.
Blue Raspberry - a bit of raspberry and a bit of blueberry, neither flavor the best those berries have to offer.

Some of the G&F were a little inconsistent. Some were tangy, others were plain and sweet, like they’d missed their flavor coats.

The colors are vibrant and really compelling. Like little pieces of beach glass.

These are probably a good movie candy, a palatable mix of flavors, easy to eat with a very low mess factor. I’m just not that into them. They’re Kosher and unlike Good & Plenty, the colors here are all artificial so I guess it’s okay for vegetarians. Earlier versions of the candy were known as Good ‘n Fruity.

UPDATE 5/4/2010: For those who miss candy coated red licorice, you might want to find Wiley Wallaby Outback Beans. While they’re not exactly like the original Good ‘n Fruity, they’re closer than this.

  1. You mean they really aren’t “candy coated fruit licorice nibs” anymore?

That’s so sad, but at least now I’m prepared to be disappointed.

Perhaps you could show a cross-section image? I’m not sure I can believe it until I see it.

  2. I don’t know what to think about these now, they sound so….mediocre. Almost too similar to Mike & Ike. I was so hoping for the licorice too!

  3. This is the most exciting candy news I’ve heard in weeks!

  4. This is indeed unfortunate that Good & Fruity as I remembered them are not being resurrected.  My hopes were up :(

  5. Bummer.  I was really looking forward to the return of the original.  One thing that irks me about new or re-incarnations of candies is the inclusion of this “blue-raspberry” flavor.  Honestly, who thinks this is a good idea?  It usually tastes strange and turns your mouth all blue.

  6. I love you blog, it has very high quality pics and your choices of candy is world-wide.. from western to eastern.  Unlike other snack/candy blogs they usually introduce western/european type of candy with low quality pictures.

  7. I too am sad they brought back the most recent version rather than the original, which rocked.

  8. I’m a little leery but I’m willing to give them a shot.  Why they had to mess with a good thing is beyond me, though.  Surely there is a Wacky Wafer petition circulating that will yield better results?

  9. I loved Good N Fruity. I found the new ones in a dollar store this weekend, and they are nasty. Not like the original. Totally different. So sad.

  10. They changed them a little since the last incarnation several years ago.  They are shorter and stubbier now and A LOT more tangy than they used to be.  I was very disapointed when they dissapeared a few years ago, Iam so glad they are back!

Comment by CM on 3/17/08 at 8:47 am #
  11. Augh…this news is bitter disappointment.  I had so hoped they would go back to the red licorice center, ever since the awful ‘90s reformulation.  The originals were classics, SO addictive and delicious.  For all of the bazillion licorice pastels out there, why can no one do a red version?  Seems like such a natural idea. Twizzlers tried one a couple of years ago that was horrible, made me long for the original G&F even more.  I’ll give them a shot but I’m not expecting much. Sigh.

Comment by Steve on 3/18/08 at 5:00 am #
  12. Tried them.  Yuck.  Even worse than the ‘90s version of G&F.  The fruit flavors are nowhere even similar to the distinct “real” good ‘n fruity ones. They are actually very similar to the fruit sours that Goelitz makes (not a bad thing if they weren’t using the G&F name), but “cheaper” tasting, with a lot of hyper-sweet, flavorless dextrose in the shell.  After a sample, the rest went in the trash :( .  The only positive I can note is that green is still *lime* rather than the now-default green apple.

  13. That is soooooo sad! I have been looking foward to the resurrection for weeks and now the Christ-child has been buried once again! Nooooooooo!

  14. I was walking through the Shop-Rite tonight looking for some easter basket stuff and saw them on the shelf. I did not know they were being re-issued. I jumped up and down and said “yeah, they are back!” and bought 10 boxes.
I got home and had to open them.
Nope, not quite what I remembered them like. They seem like oblong jelly beans or shrunken mike & ike tangy fruits.
Now I have 9 1/2 boxes left to go through. Should have just bought one to try it but the excitement took over.

Comment by Scouseyank on 3/22/08 at 6:03 pm #
  15. I didn’t realize a comeback was in the works until I ran across these in a store today!  In my glee, I bought 2 boxes.  I was *so* disappointed when I saw that they aren’t real Good & Fruity’s!

    Time for another petition?

Comment by Michelle on 3/26/08 at 2:38 pm #
  16. Okay I caught this blog awhile ago while trying to search if this candy was still alive..and found out it was going to be revived. I also signed the petition but..I finally found a box and read everybody’s comments. Sadly, I have to agree….they aren’t like what they used to be. Everyone keeps talking about the “90’s” version wasn’t as good as the original. I believe I was too young to try the original version but I first started trying them when I was in college around 2002-2004…I’m assuming that’s the 90s version. Those actually taste better than these new versions. They’re not horrible but just not the same.

Comment by Shin Star on 4/04/08 at 2:26 pm #
  17. I am devastated. I will still try to find these in the store….but I was hoping for the Good N Fruity that I used to eat in 1999-2001 era….I used to eat Good N Fruity on guard duty (DRF 7 for those who know) when I was in the 82nd Airborne Division. I would by them at the Airborne PX. I would eat them to stay awake instead of smoking or chewing tobacco. I am not optimistic about what I have read here. I will still try 1 box of the “new” ones…but I am really prepared to be disappointed. :-(

  18. The new version of Good & Fruity is cheap, and gross. Please remove and replace with original product. These are not a good relacement. They should be called bad and sour!

  19. I found these at the dollar store as well.  I was so excited as the old Good & Fruity were my favorite.  I was so disappointed.  I tossed the three boxes I purchased.  They are basically jelly beans.  PLEASE bring the originals back SOON!

  20. id pay $5 for a box of old school good and fruity with the red hard liccorice center…i would’nt even pay $1 for these awful new jelly bean ones, i give them a 3 unapealing on the meter

  21. Rats!!  I saw these at the dollar store and bought every one they had thinking it was the original.
Then I researched, and realize it was just a play on branding.

booooo.  Bring back the original Good N’ Fruity already.

Comment by Greg on 4/26/08 at 6:17 pm #
  22. I got all excited to see the jumbo 5 oz Good ?&? Fruity boxes of these in the candy chips snack aisle of my local Big Y grocery store a few weeks ago and scarfed up 3 boxes.  Let me tell you: what a big letdown.
I was hoping for the hard candy shell over stale ?hard ?n stiff? red or clear licorice taste I remember of these years and years ago. :...(
I also remember many ?o fillings pulled out of my teeth eating the originals. Heh.

Anyways, I submitted my disgust and disappointment over @ http://www.hersheys.com contact submission form.  They replied back, passed my complaints on to their quality assurance department, and sent me a reimbursement of 3 x $1 hersheys candy ‘koopins’ to use at the grocery store.

I told ‘em to bring back the original Good ?n Fruity! Don?t tinker with the formula - if it ain?t broke don?t fix it!

  23. I was so excited to see that they had revived the Good & Fruity that I bought two boxes the other day!!  To my bitter disappointment, it was not the G&F;I had remembered….  They are basically glorified jelly beans… YUCK!!  I was so upset that I had to search for the web for more information!! Bring back the licorice-filled Good & Fruity!!! PLEASE!!

  25. This past weekend I walked into a shoe store and saw Good & Fruity!  I nearly passed out.  Good & Fruity ranks among my favorite candy of all time.  I have been trying to find them for forever now.  So I see them and buy every box on the shelf.  Like 12 dollars worth.  As much as that made my day, the second I bit into them, it ruined it.  They are trying to trick us.  They taste like bad jelly beans.  What the hell.  Now Im really craving the original.

  27. Same thing found them and was excited,  I ate the 90 version.  Got them home and was disappointed when I opened them.  They are not bad but not like the old ones. :(  Oh well,  maybe Hershey will get a clue and bring us back the real ones.  I guess they are better than nothing.

  29. I saw these in the store today and let out an audible *gasp*. I opened them up as soon as I got back out to my car.

Sadly disappointed. They had the opportunity to bring back one of my all time favorites and ruined it!

What were the people in the test group thinking?

Comment by Will Brown on 5/19/08 at 3:04 pm #
  30. They are now just jelly beans. Very disappointing.

Comment by Geoff on 5/21/08 at 7:40 am #
  31. The original pre-1988 Good ‘n Fruity was one of my favorite candies. The “new and improved” version was, in my opinion, awful.  Apparently that’s what the market thought of it too, as the product died after that. This repackaging of jellybeans is unfortunate, but no more of a disappointment than the “improved” version was. I certainly hope it suffers the same fate and is not allowed to further desecrate the memory of the original candy. But I doubt that the original could ever come back under the Good ‘n Fruity name after these lame products have caused the Good ‘n Fruity name to be associated with such bad tastes. I know I wouldn’t even bother to try another version of this once great brand name unless I had some reason to believe that it was returning to the original style of the candy.

Comment by Frovingslosh on 5/21/08 at 9:26 am #
  32. With the original version I could eat an entire box or more.  With this new & improved version, I could barely eat one or two pieces.  Yuck.  How come every “new & improved” product from its original only seems to disappoint me more?

  33. I have been looking for good & fruity for years and was extremely excited to find them at the local Target today.  I bought two boxes in case I didn’t get back for a while…and plan to return the unopened box.  I am so disappointed!  I could actually taste these candies like they were years ago…and felt so let down that the candies were changed to nothing more than elongated jelly beans.  Very disappointed in NC.

  34. I was so excited when I saw them in the store. I bought like 3 boxes, but when I got to open them and ate them…I felt so disappointed. What a loss. What was Hershey thinking? They need to really rethink their candy…I mean, PA-lease…everyone loved the candy just the way it was. The new candy is crap compared to the old one.

  35. I can’t believe the disappointment.  I just went on vacation and found them in NC.  I bought 10 boxes and brought them back home (my husbands all time favorite candy.  I feel so angry about this.  Now I have 10 boxes of junk!

  36. I have been all over the place trying to find good n plentys and know I read this!  I was so excitied, but now depressed.  I was just talking to a friend and he said “watch they probably changed them”.  I told him he was crazy.  Maybe if we all complain to Hersheys they will fix the proble??!!

  37. i?ve been looking forward to these coming back for a long time now. when i saw them at target tonight i almost couldn?t believe it! i actually bought all 16 boxes they had on the shelf and planned to give them to family and friends that also loved the candy. well? i got outside and opened a box and that?s when i knew something was wrong. for anyone that wonders what good n fruity was like, they were just like good & plenty but instead of licorice they had a fruit flavor. one taste of these and the disappointment hit me? these are really just jelly beans.

i walked back in and returned the other 15 boxes and the lady doing the return even said that she was glad i told her because she would?ve like to buy some too. not that it may do any good, but i?m gonna call hersheys first thing tomorrow morning to get to the bottom of this. i encourage those of you who feel the same to do so as well?

    hershey?s candy 1-800-468-1714 (weekdays 9am-4pm estern)

like a reviewer on a different site said, ?it?d be a different matter if these were released under a different name?. and i agree.

this is so much worse than if they would?ve just never tried to bring them back. at least then they would just be missing, by making these it?s like they?re dead!

  38. this is an update to my previous post. i called hershey’s about this and left my full name and phone number with them. i don’t know if i can expect a response or not because it seemed like something they don’t normally do. but i’ll be contacting them more until i get to someone in a position of power that may have some answers. and hopfully the outcome of bringing back the real good n fruity.

i’ve added my myspace link here as well and i’ll continue to make updates on my blog there (and here when i can).

  39. I purchased some of these “new” Good & Fruity and was severely disappointed by how different they are.  It is not even the same candy (was fruity coated licorice - now some kind of jelly bean) - only the name is the same.  What a disgrace!!

I’d recommend not buying/trying and writing Hershey a letter to tell them how bad these are.

I hope they do not kill Good and Plenty too

  40. I wish I had read this before I bought 3 boxes of these at the store tonight!! I was so excited to see them on the shelves, but then when I tried them they were so nasty! I’m definitely complaining to Hershey..why bother bringing back a popular candy if it’s not the same?

  41. I was searching the web last night and found good and fruity after missing them soooo much. I bought 12 boxes and was so excited to get them. However, when I went to the drug store today I found them there and bought a box. I AM SOOO DISAPPOINTED!!!!!! I want to cancell the order I put in last night. These “good and fruity” are nothing like the ones I had when I was little. They are just small forms of mike and ikes, but not as good. I was so looking forward to the red licorice middle and the hard fruity candy coating. What a total loss! I hope hershey reads these comments and changes their ways.

  45. Knowing nothing of this site or the comeback of G&F;, I convinced my 9-year-old they would beat out all her favs - Skittles, Gummy Worms….and bought 2 boxes. Was immediately dismayed at the colors - electric blue? The shapes weren’t even the same. Then I tasted them and was SO BUMMED OUT. Ewwww. Jelly-bean-esque… and not even a good jelly bean. The consistency was nothing like the original. When I told my husband how bad they sucked, he refused to even try them. Good & Plenty? Hardly :(

  46. This impostor candy is TRASH.  I am so upset.  Its utterly disgusting and now I have an insane craving for the original Good & Fruity.  Why do people mess up a good thing.  I went to Hershey’s website and sent them an e-mail via their contact us link telling them just what I thought of their trash candy and begging them to release the original.  Everyone here should do the same.

Comment by David Cohen on 7/16/08 at 10:47 pm #
  47. Unfortunately, i don’t even know what those of you like David are asking for. I would welcome the REAL Original G&F;. But I sure wouldn’t want the “New and Improved” version that replaced the true original 20 years ago. Unfortunately, I wonder how many of the people who want the “old G&F;candy” even know how good the original was and how inferior the “Improved” version was. But after this Jelly Bean farce I would expect that if they did “bring back” the old G&F;candy it would be the inferior candy that came out 20 years ago, not the original.

  48. Such a total and complete bummer. The opaque color was the first sign that something was very, very wrong.
Even a reintroduction of the 90s version wouldn’t be met with this kind of disappointment. I actually really liked the mach 2 GNF (second favorite candy after the original) and would be thrilled to have either the original or the 2nd generation version back.

  50. I was very excited to see they returned and bought two boxes. As soon as I opened the box I was disappointed. It was obvious from the looks that these were not the same candy. They tasted OK, but were not the candy I longed for. I was one of the people who signed the e-petition a few years ago to get this wonderful candy brought back.

I was so disappointed that I called Hershey’s to complain. There is a number on the box, perhaps if more people called they might restore the recipe.

  51. When I saw the new Good N Fruity’s in the store I literally yelled cause i was so excited.  I bought the entire display… I didn’t even make it to the car before I opened the box.  I was soooooo bummed out that they tasted like Jelly Beans and nothing like the old ones.  The blue raspberry ones are gross!  I won’t get them anymore.  I called my sister to tell her because she loved them so much too.  Turns out she had done the exact same thing.  Where are the red licorice ones??????  I don’t get why they kept the black licorice ones.  Everybody loves red!  There isn’t enough red licorice candy out there.

  52. I am thoroughly disappointed in the “NEW” Good and Fruity.  I was so excited to find my favorite candy in a Bed Bath and Beyond before I realized this candy was “beyond” consumption.  Why must they try to fix something that was not broken?  Does anyone remember the “New Coke” vs. original “Coke” fiasco?  This candy is the “New Coke” of my generation.  2 thumbs way down.  If I wanted jelly beans i would buy jelly beans.

  53. I am in the same boat as everyone else. I am only 26, but I remember when Good N Fruity was being clearanced out at a local gas station when I was much younger. I bought all six boxes they had left. While at Target last week I noticed these Good & Fruity boxes, and I purchased all 11 boxes they had on the shelf. It’s been eight days, and we still haven’t finished the first box. These thing are decent, but nothing like what I remembered. A glorified jelly bean toying with my dreams of thin red licorice strips.

  54. I’ll add my voice to this litany. I had been trying hard to find the old Good N’ Fruity; any time I was visiting a different area of the country, I’d check in local convenience stores and groceries. So, likewise, I freaked out when I saw the boxes this weekend at Bed Bath and Beyond (weird, there). First off, I knew something was wrong by the look of the few I pulled out of the box. First taste confirmed, this is not the same candy as before. Far too sweet and tangy. I like sweet and I like tangy, but I was expecting the Good N’ Fruity of yore - perfection. I don’t care for Good & Plenty, so I haven’t checked whether those had changed from before, but if they haven’t, why can’t Good & Fruity be made the same as the old school?

Comment by Christian on 8/04/08 at 6:05 am #
  55. I WAS EQUALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE NEW VERSION OF GOOD & FRUITY!!!  NOT THE SAME OLD RECIPE AS I ENJOYED GROWING UP. THEY ARE MORE LIKE JELLY BEANS NOW AND TASTE TOTALLY DIFFERENT.  OH WELL, LOOKS LIKE WE MIGHT HAVE TO GET ANOTHER PETITION GOING FOR THE ORIGINAL RECIPE!!

  56. I would like to add my total and utter disdain for this candy.  You all are not alone.  I purchased 15 boxes of the candy and haven’t finished the first box.  I can’t give these things away.  I would like an explanation as to why they would change such a culinary delight as good and fruity.  This reeks of a socialist maneuver by a candy conglomorate.  Will we see a commercial with good and plenty goose stepping down the streets of Washington?  Can anyone say class action lawsuit?  I would liken this atrocity to the Watergate scandal and the “Alleged” lunar landing.  Thank you.

So, not a total disappointment - but not a replacement for the real thing! Bring back the real Good’n'Fruities! (the new version even has a slightly different name - Good & Fruity)

  63. I was stoked to see G&P;at the store this weekend.  I bought two boxes, nearly 5, but something held me back.  Then I noticed the “&” rather than the “n” and thought “Uh-Oh”.

I am very disappointed with these “new & improved”, they don’t even deserve the name.  Hersheys is a huge disappointment, but I guess what can you expect from an American company that moves out of America, huh.

    Two thumbs way down!

  66. I have eaten these “new” Good and Fruity, not quite the “old” version. Yes they are like Jelly Beans in a way. Miss the “old” version.

  67. THEY ARE NOTHING LIKE MIKE & IKE!!!!! I miss good n’ fruity! They no longer make them and I wish Hershey’s would start producing these delicious movie time candies again, they were the BEST!

Comment by Corie Stevens on 11/18/08 at 6:39 am #
  68. I was a good & fruity lover when I was a kid.  I was unaware they weren’t making them when I went on a mission to find them and found to no avail no candies.  Just the other day, to my suprise, I found them in the store and bought the whole bunch of em…..well, sorry to say , they are nothing more than mike and ikes or jelly beans. The whole excitement was the old version. These are terribly disappointing. I won’t be buying them again and I will contact Hershey.

  69. I have to agree with the majority.  I found the new ones while on vacation in California.  Can’t find them in the midwest yet.  But I was so disappointed when I bit into the first one and found it to be very different from the original.  Why bother?!?!?!  Same thing happened to me with Brach’s Red Twists.  Every candy I fall in love with gets pulled or changes.  Sucks.  I’ll sign any petition to bring back the original.  I lived on them in college and I don’t like the taste of Good N Plenty.  If ever they should’ve shelved a candy it should’ve been that which tastes like black jelly beans.  Herseys can kiss my ass

  71. Tried your new formula good and fruity very dissappointed not even close to acceptable why not try to copy the origional…..........please

Comment by Donald Hanson on 1/25/09 at 4:38 pm #
  72. These new good and Fruitys are terrible.  How hard is it for Hershey’s to make these candy coated licorice if they can already do it for the Good and Plenty?  Why are these both totally different products?

Comment by Darren J Spiegel on 2/19/09 at 8:53 am #
  73. I have been pining for Hersey to bring back the ever loved Good & Fruity, emails and all! I was so angry to have seen them disappear suddenly without a trace. I was walking through walmart about a month ago when BAM!, there they were again! Good ole Good & Fruity’s! Same box and everything. I bought 6 boxes just to stock up on them…just in case, only to get home to open the box and bite into yet another disappointment…mike and ike wannabees….frickin jelly beans!!! What happened to the little fruity licorice candy coated pieces I so loved!?????! I am disappointed and can barely eat these. They obviously lost the original recipe and tried to pass these yucky things off as the real Good & Fruity! Big jerks!

Comment by corie on 2/24/09 at 10:32 am #
  74. I am a fan of the original Good N Fruity candy.  The new version is a big disappointment.  I thought that they would bring back the original flavor.  They might as well give this candy a new name.  It is most definitely not the same.

  77. I like so many others was very excited to see good & fruity again.  I bought two boxes, bypassed my usual good & plenty for what I thought would be a blast from the past, and was very disappointed.  They are not the same.  Somethings just do not need to be “improved” upon. Like the old saying, if it isn’t broke don’t fix it.  Bring back the old good & fruity.

Comment by Michelle on 4/02/09 at 8:06 am #
  78. It’s been a while since my last post.  Of the 15 boxes I purchased in July, I still have 12 left.  The dog won’t even touch these things.  Why have they not been pulled from the shelves?  Americans should organize a tea party protest over these candies being released.  These “Good and Fruity” jelly beans are not even close to jelly bellys in flavor or general delightfulness.  There has to be someone or something that likes these things.  I’m going to try them as fish bait.  Maybe I can find a use for them because they are unfit for human consumption. What a disaster!

Comment by Chief on 4/15/09 at 9:46 am #
  79. I grew up in the 90s so I guess I loved the version so many of you hate. Maybe they were different for a few years when I was a kid but I don’t remember.

The new ones are horrible though.

    Comment by M on 4/18/09 at 6:32 pm #
  80. GOOD NEWS!  Please read entire comment!

I tried these last year and like everyone else I was disappointed.  They were nasty jelly beans.

I bought another box today, not sure why, BUT they are no longer jelly beans!  They are hard in middle and have that crunchy coating again.  Now I can’t promise that the other (jelly bean tasting) boxes on the shelves aren’t still for sale.  I bought these at a local hardware store.  I’m very happy they fixed the problem!!

Comment by Kim on 5/18/09 at 3:12 pm #
  81. Very dissapointing!  NOT the origianl Good And Fruity I remember as a child.  I will never buy them again.

Comment by Judy Lan on 5/23/09 at 2:27 pm #
  82. “A glorified jelly bean toying with my dreams of thin red licorice strips.”

truer words have never been spoken…  why did you take away the perfect red licorice nibs? and what made you think anemic weird flavored jelly beans would work…

    yuck, 3 boxes I bought in my excitement… finished half of one box… that’s it… yuck…

red licorice nib recipe please… thanks.

Comment by xminer on 6/14/09 at 4:35 pm #
  83. My goodness.
Good and Fruity never WAS licorice flavored.
    That’s Good and Plenty.
And they are glorified “jelly beans, but not as sweet.
I remember because, I hated Good and Plenty, and normal jelly beans were ‘touching the licorice ojelly beans’. So Good and Fruity was it!!

The original flavors I remember from the old commercial.
Red (cherry), orange (orange), yellow (lemon) and gren (lime is love and love is green and love is alll around.)

So take a box open it, and you’ll see, there’s a rainbow in a package of Good and Fruity Candy.

Comment by Jenny on 7/11/09 at 9:36 pm #
  84. Obviously the above person never had the original. They weren’t licorice flavored… they actually HAD licorice at the core. Plenty = Black Licorice and Fruity (did) = Red Licorice.

@comment 80, I read this when I got an email answer to this post. It’s been two months, and I did purchase another box. Nothing has changed. My first comment was on 7/31/08 where I stated we had 12 boxes. We still have six of those boxes. You know what we did with a box of these this winter? Decorated a snowman… I’m sure even he hated these things.

Comment by Haven on 7/12/09 at 8:16 am #
  85. Just awful. Why did they change the original?

Comment by Newman Newman on 7/23/09 at 8:35 am #
  86. Good n Fruity was my favorite candy when it had the red licorice in the middle instead of a cheap rip off of Mike n Ike. In my opinoin, they mine as well stop making them if they can’t put the red licorice in them. It’s only common sense to put red licorice in them when the Good n Plenty’s have black licorice. If they ever do bring back the old way of making them, they will see sales jump though the roof and that will be due to me alone! They are the best. I would eat them constantly if it was made of red licorice!

I too was very excited to see them in the store, but when I bought them and ate one, I just had to throw out the rest of them. It was a huge dissapointment and let down that they are not the same.

Hershey… get your act together. I’m not the only one here!

If there is a way to get Hershey to make them the right way again with red licorice, sign me up… I’m in and would do almost anything to get my favorite candy back!

Comment by Lynn on 8/20/09 at 6:48 am #
  87. Actually, they are not bad.  Not as good as the originals but far better that Mike and Ikes.

Comment by BillKat on 9/04/09 at 8:37 am #
  88. Agreed. I was psyched when I saw Good n Fruity in the store, because I used to love them. I just opened them up and am very disappointed that they’re not the same. They’re not as good as Mike & Ike either. They’re more like a very sugary jellybean. They should be called Bad n Sugary.

Comment by HankTheDevourer on 10/16/09 at 5:58 pm #
  89. Does anyone know any candy company that makes a candy like the original Good n Fruity? With the red licorice nib in the candy coated shell? I’ve been craving them for like a year and I still remember them from when I was 4!!

Comment by Kristi on 11/06/09 at 4:11 pm #
  90. Um, I just wanted to tell you that I think you have this review all wrong because Good & Fruity is an awesome candy. I could not live without it. They are delicious little candies and all the flavors or a burst of fruitylicious filling. So you need to get your facts straight! Sorry that I don’t agree with you!!

Cheska - my facts are straight, which are things like the colors & flavors. I expressed an opinion, which is honest and true. Your opinion is your own and is also valid ... that’s why there’s a comment section here. Most folks who visit here respect other opinions, even if they don’t share them.

You may not have tasted the original Good & Fruity, which is most of the reason that people are unhappy with this candy.

Comment by Cybele on 2/15/10 at 11:29 am #
  92. I tried these… SO LAME!!!! these make Mike and Ike’s look like Godiva. They were WAY too sweet, hard to taste the fruitiness over the sugar.

I threw them away. What a waste of money!

  93. I recently had my comment posted on here and I just wanted to say I am sorry about saying your facts weren’t straight all I meant was that you shouldnt put you think Good&Fruity; is disgusting because I think it is delicious and it is my favorite candy. I do respect others opinions and I just wanted to know if you were calling me disrespectful because if you are then please don’t write on here about me. Yes I have tasted the original Good&Fruity; and I thought they were awesome so please don’t tell me that I probably didn’t do something because I did and you don’t even know me!

Cheska - you still seem to misunderstand. This is a place to post opinions about candy. If someone thinks that it’s disgusting, they can say that. They don’t have to agree with you and they don’t have to say only positive things.

I did not call you disrespectful, please read more carefully. I said that other commenters are respectful of those who disagree with them.

I don’t need to know you to tell you the rules of this blog and comment section.

  95. I think I would rather eat a box of originals than these.  And yes, I mean, if someone can find me a box of originals, from like 1982, I am more likely to devour those than to buy these again.  The only thing better than nearly busting your teeth on the delicious fruity shell/hard red licorice interior is doing so in the winter.  You really have to love that interior to subject your teeth to those impenetrable beams.  Ah, but they were *nearly* impenetrable!  You fought, and you fought, and you might crack a tooth or two, but you would get through that licorice and it was worth it!  It built character!  Who says candy has to be easy?  Instead of reformulating the candy, why don’t we just hire someone to pre-chew it for us?  Right, because it’s stupid, and so was messing with art.  I know, I know, if there were a bigger market, an audience more demanding of candy-complexity, the old G&F would remain on the shelves.  I guess I’m just a dreamer.

  99. Well, they robbed me again. Of my childhood that is. First when they took G&F off the shelves and now, when they duped me by packaging an imposter that is nothing more than a sour jelly bean. How could they do that! If Hershey wants to put out a product that is just like a hundred other jelly bean companies so be it, but don’t package it and call it something it’s not. LONG LIVE THE ORIGINAL GOOD & FRUITY !!!

Don’t even bother responding to me, as I really don’t care what losers think wink

As for the candy, why do companies feel the need to take unique and much loved products, and then screw around with them? Hershey, really? First your chocolate, and now your sugar too? Get REAL!

Comment by Stacey on 6/24/10 at 12:28 am #
  106. They have absoultely wrecked Good n Fruity. These are not the ORIGINAL! Not even close. They taste awful and there was not blue raspberry. Bring back the original GOOD N FRUITY and save yourselves (whoever tried to pull the Good & Fruity stunt)!!!! I threw the boxes I bought away. I couldn’t even finish a handful :(

  107. I thought I was the only one that loved the old Good N Fruity. Funny I was at Big Lots yesterday and found some Outback Beans and thought I bet these are the closest I’m gonna get to my favorite old candy,  and they are very close to the original G&F but the flavor is a little different. Good though. Please Hershey bring the Original back!!!

  108. I’m glad i’m not the only person that was very disapointted when I purchased a box of G&P.  For the last 25 plus years I could not figure why they stopped making them.  I remember leaving from the dentist at the University Of Chicago and stopping at the hospital gift shop and buying a box, lol.

Comment by Jay on 3/06/12 at 4:53 pm #
  109. Hello… I was so upset by the NOT good n fruity in the box I ended up here DONT waste your $$$ if you wnt IKE N MIKE buy em cause that’s what is in the GOOD n FRUITY box I also notice that the GOOD n PLENTY ar small and skinny . WHY WHY WHY bother putting out a sham of a product that only brings shame to a great candy .

  111. Wow!! Can’t believe all the negativity regarding the new Good & Fruity!!!! They are phenomenal! The flavor is natural tasting and positively delicious!! I search high and low for these. My only complaint is they are not readily available. Not many stores carry my top favorite candy!! I love them and hope they change nothing!
