I guess it’s appropriate to visit the Wonka line of candies since there will be another movie soon. There are very few actual products out there, I reckon, that were created based on a novel. And more than a novelty, some of the Wonka candies are pretty good. The brand itself is an odd one, changing hands from time to time and amassing some other brands in the meantime (did you know that Bottle Caps are now Wonka products?).
Besides the odd history, I thought I’d do a little review of the Everlasting Gobstopper since I found that they’ve created a new version - the Chewy Centered Gobstopper.
First, a Gobstopper is a jawbreaker that has different flavored layers and in the center is a sweet-tart sphere. When I was a kid the Gobstoppers were large, like real jawbreakers. I haven’t seen those in years, but have been able to find the boxes of Gobstoppers that contain little marble sized versions. They come in bright colors and the layers change flavor three or four times before getting to the center. The flavor itself is rather bland, more sweet than tart, but it has a pleasant cooling feel to the smooth surface.
The Chewy Gobstopper has the same flavor except for the center, which is much larger, so the layers are fewer or thinner (I couldn’t figure it out because I kept chewing them up before getting to the center). They’re very much the same as the regular Gobstopper and I think I might buy them again. Especially if I can find them at the 99 cent store.
Rating: 8 out of 10.
They’re tasty.
We purchased many bags of your Gobstopper hearts for Valentines Day. We loved the candy because, unlike regular Gobstoppers, because they are flat, you are less likely to chew them as you are the round ones. And when you get up there in age and have to worry about chipping a tooth, it is much safer. Are there other holiday Gobstoppers (for example, Easter) that are flat like the hearts were?
Just bought a 10 OZ box at Target today while shopping. I heard they were really good and the are! Worth a try!
gobstoppers are the best. i used to buy them all the time in 2nd grade.
I’m usually more of a red flavor type person. I like cherry best, followed by strawberry. But surprisingly, in gobstoppers my favorite flavor is the green one.
We’re looking for fun recipes. Help us find recipes that include wonka’s favorites please. Alicia’s favorite candy in the world is the everlasting gobstobber. Can you help us? Thank you very much
I still have some of the large Wonka everlasting gobstoppers (I stocked up in the late 80?s). I agree about the ?cool? smooth texture and they really last a long time. There were actually two sizes made at the time: larger ones were sold in a small two-pack, and the slightly smaller ones were sold in a box. There have been several changes since then, everytime they get smaller and they don?t taste the same.
why cant they sell anything good in england
I love gobstoppers (green is my favorite) but my last two boxes have been horrible. They changed the design of the box and unfortunately changed the product too. They break immediately and have a more chemical taste. I’m really disappointed with Nestle! I’ve written to them about this and received no response.
The green is the best! I miss the bubblegum centered gobstoppers. :(
I’m with #9. Gobstoppers used to be solid candy (like a jawbreaker). Now, they have a sweet tart like candy center. I liked the original ones much better. I won’t be buying anymore, thanks.
I’m with #9 too… Gobstoppers have taken a drastic change and it’s only for the worse!! How are they still called gobstoppers if they break immediately?? And no they don’t have mulitple layers of flavor any longer. Unfortunately i too won’t be buying them any longer and I plan to write nestle to let them know.
