Elmer’s Chocolate
I’d never heard of Elmer’s before. But when I went into the store, I found it even more shocking that I didn’t know who they were, because the stores are just filled to the gills with their heart shaped boxes of chocolates. Most are on the small side, as this four piece box was, which pleased me that I didn’t need to buy a huge box. The design on the boxes is also rather, um, traditional. Some have pictures of puppies or kittens but most have roses or flowers of some sort. After bringing the box home I was curious what was inside but I didn’t want to dig right in. So I asked the internets. What I found out was rather interesting. Elmer’s Chocolate only makes five chocolates for their mixed boxes: creamy caramel, chocolate truffle, chocolate fudge, strawberry cream and orange cream. Milk Chocolate Rectangle is Orange Creme which is a tangy cross between Aspergum and a chocolate covered creamsicle. Round Milk Chocolate is Soft Caramel - kind of milky tasting, a little salty, a bit creamy and offsets the far too sweet and grainy chocolate very well. Dark Chocolate Rectangle is Orange Creme - okay, maybe this was strawberry, because it was more pink than orange, but it didn’t taste that way. Milk Chocolate Square is Chocolate Fudge - sweet, not terribly chocolatey but a pretty smooth and pleasing texture. Overall, I wasn’t pleased enough with the intensity of the flavors or the quality of the chocolate to want to buy these on sale next week after the holiday is over. But I was pleased enough to now want to try the Heavenly Hash and Gold Brick eggs for Easter as those seem to be the items that made the company famous. I guess when you consider that the box of chocolates is less expensive than a greeting card, it’s probably not a bad way to go as a small token. On a side note, while exploring the internet in search of info about Elmer’s Candy, I noticed that their website had a copyright notice of 2003, the most recent press release (well only one) posted was from 2002. Their motto on the website is “The Freshest Ideas in Seasonal Candy” ... uh, yeah. Of course they also say that they’re the oldest family run candy business in the US (since 1855). Other Notes: this box contains 1.5 grams of trans fat. Related Candies

I have to say they look rather over packaged and a tad boring nor do the sound that yum. I also hate love heart boxes! Id pass on these. Thanx for the review.
I got a box of these from my parents for almost every Valentine’s Day I can remember. I think I would give them a 4 - they are a big yawn.
Wow, those look gross, I used to remember buying frilly pink or red hearts for my mom when I was young. They had lace and fake plastic flowers on them.
The chocolates themselves sound like the crappy Pot of Gold Chocolates we have in Canada.
Hmmm, that’s kinda scary when a company can’t make strawberry taste different from orange…..
Thanks so much Cybele for taking my suggestion and running with it (even if it’s running away from it, ha ha ha!) and for your sweet compliments!
my parents loooove heavenly hashes. ick.
Aspergum! I haven’t thought of that disgusting bitter orange taste since I was little. Do they still make that to torture small children with? Lord, I hope not.
A - at the very least the packaging did protect the candies from getting dinged around (however, set against that hazard red they didn’t look that appealing to me either).
April - I recall getting both upscale and middle-of-the-road stuff like this for Valentines. I’d eat it all.
Helen - I’ve never had the Pot of Gold stuff, it was something like $8 at the drug store when I picked these up, so I thought I’d wait until next week.
Sera - finally, I looked at the in the light and saw that I had them completely backwards! Which I think is probably worse.
Pam - I saw the Heavenly Hash in the Rite Aid ad over the weekend, so I’m hoping my local one carries it. (I don’t have high hopes for the taste, but what the hey!)
Erin - I don’t think they let people give aspirin to kids any longer because of Reyes Syndrome (apparently if you give a kid with chicken pox aspirin they can go blind ... kind of rare, but of course preventable now that they know the connection).
i love your candy maybe i am weard but i think i i great and could eat a hole bax at a time. wih i could get it all year
Awful candy received as gift from someone whom a thought gave a HOOT about me. He should have kept on going with this junkie chocolate . Obviously he hasn’t tried this chocolate or he wouldn’t of given it to me as a symbol of love. I would give this to someone I loathe and want to make sick. Oh yeah, and look at the box!! (THE HUGH ARTIFICAL UGLY ROSE)I WISH I NEVER RECEIVED ELMERS CHEAP ILL-TASTING SWEETS?
JUICY
hi i and my love the great taste of heavenly hash
chocolate eggs ( BUT NEVER ENOUGH IN STORE TO GO AROUND ) some one suggested internet - too late all sold out i think the elmers company should try to make more to go around…...
I received 2 boxes of candy from my friends at work. One was Elmers, the other was Russell Stovers. The RS was stale and really awful, the Elmers was very good. Each one was different. People that complain about chocolate and orange probably need to get out more. That is a great combination. The choc. and carmel was very good also. The strawberry tasted like strawberry. The choc. was not to thick and not to overwhelming. So good job Elmers.
This candy is nasty, it is white as if old, the filling is gritty and it smells cheap. Do not recommend to anyone. I hope you donate money to charity because that is how I feel about your product, to terrible to eat and you get paid for it.
I haven’t tried Elmer’s Valentine candy, but the Easter candy is good, especially the Heavenly Hash and Gold Brick Eggs. Pecan eggs are a little too sweet for my taste. None of it is Godiva chocolate, but neither is the price.
From Chef Emeril Lagasse:
“I have long been a fan of Elmer’s Gold Brick Eggs. The rich, creamy chocolate candy with pecans is positively yummy.”
Elmer’s candy. From the first day I had some, I tried to get some more. Was not able to find this
delicious candy in almost a year. I looked and looked at many different stores. Now I tried online to see if I could purchase some of Elmer’s
candies-it is really that good. Another candy
that is quite good is See’s Candies. I have seen
this available at some airports and in California.
I sure with I had either at this moment.

I got a box of these for Valentines day and only ate one piece completely, and I regret that one. I found them to be disgusting. The fillings were awful. I’m usually not very discriminating about chocolate. I simply cannot believe the positive reviews. But I was amused to find some in my search engine when typing “Elmer’s chocolates are disgusting”.
Wow, I can’t believe so many of you don’t like Elmer’s. I love Elmer’s chocolates. My husband bought me a big box of Godiva two years ago and I threw out 1/2 of it, it just wasn’t that good. I love Lindt, very creamy! But, I don’t know what it is about Elmer’s but I think they’re fantastic. The chocolates are always very fresh and I love the way the chocolate crunches just a bit when I bite into them. They’re also the only candy company that I know of that I love every flavor they make.
I told my husband I loved the Elmer’s and he had to have me repeat that three times… he just couldn’t believe it because I am generally a chocolate snob.
My all time favorite brand is See’s Candies, with Dan’s Chocolates coming in second.. but please… give me Elmer’s before Godiva any day.
I also can’t believe all the negative comments. I just tried Elmer’s for the first time and loved it. I went back and bought up 12 more of the little hearts that were on sale. I’ve eaten the most expensive brands and find these to be just as tasty.
WOW!! I also can’t believe all the negative comments from the “name brand” lovers! As a fan of the finer things in life I got a box for V-day and couldnt believe how great they are! Simple, smooth and not overly compilcated tastes, and for the first time ever also liked all the flavors! I’ve been searching for them everywhere!
While at a Walgreen’s in Seattle, I purchaed a box of chocolates that were “Happy Bunny” chocolates. There were 8 Elmer’s creme chocolates inside.
I can’t find this product at any point on your website. Can you provide a clue as to how I might get these.

I love Elmer’s Candies! I’ve ate the best from around the world and there is something about
those creme’s that had me running the road’s
and calling every store in town just so I could have one more. I could not figure out why they were so elusive! So I tracked them down on the internet
and pleaded with them in an email and they emailed back and said they are at The Cracker Barrel Restaurants. I called and they do. Please call ahead just to be sure. They are so affordable
and delectable it’s a sin! They must have a secret ingredient to make you want them…
Hello all,
I have been eating Elmers candy for as long as i can remember. It was good then and it’s good now.I purchased a box @ Fred’s discount store on Dec,1st 2009 and a day later its gone .Everyone is going a great job.
Thanks and don’t change a thing.

My husband and I love your candy, its the best, can’t believe all the neg comments. Is this people just scanning the net with nothing else positive in their lives? Sounds like kids to me.Grow up. Keep up the good candy making!!!

I had never heard of Elmer’s either until the other day when I stopped at Wal-Mart and Dollar Tree to buy one item at each store.
Both stores had a display of Elmer’s chocolates, but I noticed a subtle difference:
While both boxes appeared similar on the outside, the box (99 cents) at Wal-Mart weighs 2.4 ounces, while the Dollar Tree box ($1) weighs 1.8 ounces.
So I am guessing that the Dollar Tree box has only three chocolate but I don’t know which one is missing. (Will report back next week.)
I received a box of these chocolates for Valentine’s - I loved every one of them but I must comment that the orange was by far the best oranage chocolate I have ever had - I wish I could buy a whole of them!
Quite suprised by the negative reviews although I have never tried their Valentine chocolates, my wife likes them. What they are really famous for though are the Gold Brick Eggs which are absolutly devine. I grew up in Louisiana and lived for 17 years right up the road from them in Hammond, LA. At easter time it was not unusal to find that I would amass 12 cases of their Gold Bricks to carry me through the next 3 months. Love the Gold Bricks!
I just read a comment about the chocolate being stale, not so doesn’t happen. The chocolate you buy from them is always fresh as it is only made when the season arrives.
I have purchased many of your Premium Assorted Chocolates(408gr)
The only reason I buy them is your Orange Creams
are the best I have ever tasted,I eat the orange creams out of the box & my husbands eats the rest & thoroughly enjoys them.
Some times they are hard to fine in the stores & when we see them we always pick up a couple of boxes
Believe me I am one of your best customers. I just wish Orange Creams came separately.
Thanking you Rosemarie Bowles
Long time fan of Elmers
Just bought valentine box of chocolate covered whole nuts from elmers and a box of Hershey pot of gold premium.
No contest
Hershey is good if you cannot get Elmers…..
How much you like Elmer’s will depend on what type of chocolate you’re used to eating. I’m used to eating chocolate containing at least 60% cocoa so when I see “sugar” as the 1st ingredient, it raises a red flag for me. I hate Nestle, hate Hershey’s, hate Mars. That chocolate is very unappealing to me.
However, most of my friends love the very sweet…very fatty chocolate and they enjoy Elmer’s and other brands.
Very good.
I love these! These chocolate gifts have been a valentines day staple for as long as I can remember. In fact, tasting them brings back childhood memories every time! I absolutely love the strawberry and the orange ones!!
I think from reading this report and some of the comments that some of you have confused the issue entirley of quality and taste based on a box, did you take it out of the box before you ate it? Come on, this is not Godiva we’re talking about -it’s good old fashioned chocolate candy, a la Whitman’s sampler et al not the best-not the worst [and I dare say quite comparable in quality] for those mid Americans who cannot afford expensive imports in fancy lace wrappers. It’s obvious, at least to me it was, apparantly not to some of you , which economy group this company caters, after all, and I can tell you from my experience as a child growing up in the midwest during a recession - we were glad to get anything during the holidays… remember bridge mix? ugh!!, now ‘cmon get real and take the silver spoon you borrowed for this taste report out of your mouth. I found this candy boxed by the pound last year at the local dollar store during the holidays and the incredibly good price of 2.00 enabled me to give to everyone on my list i.e. the mailman, the elderly people across the street, many others I couldn’t have otherwise during a season of giving - I also kept some for home and enjoyed a couple of boxes myself, and I KNOW what Godiva tastes like - I kept it on platters around the living area for the taking and there were more than a few guests who asked where I bought it and were surprised when i told them Not everything chocolate need come in a gilt wrapper to tell us even before it hits our tsate buds we’re about to have a mouthwatering experience This was the best, bar none, candy I’ve ever bought -in this price range - and am already looking to where i can purchase it for Easter. For those who can, go get the good stuff and pay entirely too much for the wrapper, You’ll think more of yourselves that you’ve blown good money on things most of us can’t afford. I can enjoy this “sweet occasion” all year long, by the pound, in a plain box…..and who in the heck saves those frilly boxes anyway?????
I have avoided Elmer’s for years (how could it be that you have never heard of them?) but bought some this year because Rite-Aid had three-piece hearts in the discount bin for ten cents a pop.
I must say they did exceed my low expectations.
Soft carmel was closer to butterscotch, I thought.
I wouldn’t have been able to say if the square one was chocolate truffle or chocolate fudge, but from pictures I guess it’s the fudge one. The experience was that of a firmer Three Musketeers. Dare I say I would recommend it?
As for the orange cream, touché with the Aspergum comment.
there fantastic the only way you bought them stale is if you bpught them on discount after season so don’t try to be cheap. and all of there chocaltes are good not like most where you get three good ones and a lot of place fillers.
I wish elmers would get rid of the strawberry and just keep orange
I think
The orange is pretty good
I will admit I am craving another box of Elmer Christmas candy.
I got an early Valentines gift—one of them being a big box of Elmer Chocolate’s. The question now is, will i be able to control myself from eating them all at once?—LOVE your chocolates! ^.^
I have to admit I am a Russell Stover Fan, But My Husband received a Small box of Elmer’s Chocolate!
It was Great I loved Each one. There were only 5, and I ate every one. I have a new Chocolate love!! Thanks
I got this kind of chocolate from my sister .Just before the Valenline Day.
Then i became a fan of this kind of chocolate
i have a letter goining out to you today i tried your valentine candy i loved every piece i aqm now a fan i just have to find out where to get them barbara jaffe .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
I just had my first Elmers candy this week (at age 57!) and I really enjoyed them. I’m not a chocolate gourmet, I just know what I like. After trying the Valentine candy, I can’t wait for the Gold Brick items!
I received a five pound box of Elmer’s for Valentine’s Day. No.1: Why would a company make a 5lb box o’chocolates?
No. 2: Why would a dude/boyfriend think this is an acceptable gift for Valentines after you specifically said, “you don’t have to do anything really, but a flower would be nice.” ??
No. 3: The production date for said received choclates on Feb. 14, 2012 was August 2011 from Texas.
Is this really ok!?!? Me thinks not…
I wish the gold brick ice cream topping was available in my area. We had it years ago and it was the best topping ever made. I’m not sure what happened but would really like it back.
