Cup-O-Gold

Name: Cup-O-Gold
Brand: Hoffman’s (made by Adams & Brooks)
Place Purchased: 99 cent store
Price: 33 cents
Size: 1.25 oz
Calories per ounce: 168
Type: Chocolate/Marshmallow

Okay, I’ll admit I bought this in an effort to diversify my offerings on the site. I like the idea of supporting some smaller candy companies, and this one is made right here in Los Angeles. I didn’t think I’d like it. I’m not that keen on marshmallow as a rule. I love toasted marshmallows, but for some reason I don’t think of those as candy. Most other marshmallow candies are just to sticky sweet. The only one to date that I like (and buy regularly) is See’s Scotchmallow - which is a marshmallow top on a disc of caramel covered in chocolate. Their mallow has a bit of a honey note to it, which complements the caramel well.

Anyway, this little delightful cup is made with milk chocolate with bits of coconut mixed in and crushed of almonds. Inside that is an incredibly light and foamy marshmallow creamy filling. I also liked the package. The graphics are bold and smooth and appealing.

The complex flavors really blend together well. The bits in the chocolate offset the sweetness of the chocolate and the foamy center gives a smooth texture and lightness to it all. The thing is, I’m still not sure if I’ll buy these again. Maybe if I get a jones for a scotchmallow and I’m not in the mall.

  1. I recently visited California and bought one of you cupogold candy bars.  I love it but can’t seem to find it around here.  Is it possible to find out where the candy is sold.  Thanks Mary

Mary - I actually asked the president of Adams-Brooks about this issue - I’d love to pick them up at the drug store or grocer, but I never see them there. It’s tough for his company because they don’t have a large number of products, especially in the chocolate area.

Keep looking at the stores like Dollar Tree, I’ve seen them there before (but it was a multi-pack, I think).

  3. I love these. I recently moved to Ohio from California and I can’t get these anywhere. You can buy a whole box on their website, or just have family ship you some everyone once and awhile (my choice).

  6. The Mallo Cups we just tried did not have coconut listed on the ingredients and there was definitely coconut in the top chocolate layer. Isn’t this dangerous for allergies not to have it listed?

  7. I LOVE these cup o gold candy bars and cannot find them in Arizona at all but I get them at a little corner market in Tooele, Utah and I buy the entire box of 24 whenever I go there (about once a year). 8. This is why I love the internet. I am fifty and every now and then I think about the candy bar my mother always use to eat, the Cup o Gold. Well it’s Halloween again and I’ve candy on the brain. I thought let’s see what happened to the COG. It’s great to know that I can get it. The last time it crossed my mind it was the late 90’s and I found it for sale in a liquor store. The taste brought me back to my childhood and my mother with her strange candy cup. I was eating Almond Joys back then. Thank you internet and those who love to blog about any and everything.

  9. Do you ship out a box (24?) of Cup of Gold candy to people?  If so, how much is the shipping?  Do they taste similar to the Mallo Cup?
