Brach’s Fiesta Eggs

Brach's Fiesta Eggs PackageThe full name on these is Brach’s Pastel Fiesta Malted Milk Eggs which of course made me wonder if they have another product that is perhaps primary colors or just black and white. Malted milk eggs at Easter were a particular favorite of mine. They were one of those interactive candies, you can lick the shell and then color your lips with the coral pink or white chalky edible makeup. (That white lipstick was quite the look when I was very little.)

Now of course I’m much more interested in the “real milk chocolate” part of the wrapper. Brach’s has been owned by Barry Callebaut since 2003, so maybe they were teaching Brach’s a thing or two about chocolate. They don’t need to be taught how to make boiled sugar candy, they do that just fine.

imageThe Fiesta Eggs are big and bold. They make a satisfying clacking sound in the bag when you roll them around. They can be eaten whole (or applied liberally over the face) but I prefer to bite them in half and have a look. I don’t know what I expect to find, as it has always been the same ... malt center, chocolate layer and then hard colored shell. But you never know! (Actually, I’ve eaten very old malt balls before and every once in a while I’ve gotten ones with “melted” centers but shells that are intact or just a little dented.)

Fiesta Eggs smell like Easter. They’re sweet and have a slight vanilla hint to them. This bag was very fresh, the shells were super crisp and the centers were light and airy.

Unlike the normal chocolate covered malt balls, the Fiesta Egg is more about the combination of the texture of the hard sugar shell and the light crunch of the malted center. The chocolate layer provides a little bit of a creamy texture, but not much flavor. In the Brach’s chocolate, as far as I can tell, is too too sweet.

These still aren’t my ultimate malted egg. I’m not sure I’ve found it yet. I wasn’t blown away by the Jelly Belly ones either and I picked up some more vibrant colored ones (but I don’t know the brand) a the Sweet Factory a few weeks ago in the bulk bins. The tasted too much like food coloring and not enough like malt. Perhaps such a candy doesn’t exist.
See the previous review on Mighty Malts from Necco (and a photo of the Whopper’s Robin’s Eggs, for reference).

But you can be sure that I’m going to finish these! How do I look with lilac lipstick?

  1. What, you mean you don’t suck out the malted center after biting them in half? I thought that was the point!

  2. At the moment (literally), these speckled eggs are my favorite, but they must be everyone else’s, too, since I can never find them when I go out shopping.

Melted malted milk balls always catch me by surprise and always squick me out, too.

  3. What a cool blog! It’ so much fun to see so much candy info collected in one place. In case you and your readers are interested, here’s a post we wrote about candy being bad for your skin

  4. Is there anywhere in LA where you like to get a malt—that is if you like ice cream?

Comment by Tiffany on 4/02/07 at 8:12 pm #
  5. Okay. I love malted milk balls. They are probably my favorite candy. But GOOD malted milk balls are SO hard to find (as you clearly know) because there are so many factors going into one ball. The only ones I eat (and love) are from the Confectionery in Seattle. I have no idea what type they are - for all I know, they are regular nothing-special brand. But - the chocolate (dark OR milk) is always glossy and delicious and chocolaty, and even better - the malted center is crisp, sweet, a little grainy and malty, and crumbles in your mouth - what every malted milk ball should do. I have yet to find anything better, and feel (quite strongly) that there will never be a quality malt ball to be found in a grocery store. Rather, you have to get them fresh, and pay a little extra for quality chocolate.

  6. Brach’s Fiesta Malted Milk Eggs are the absolute best! No other malted milk egg will ever take their place. I sometimes bite them in half to look at the inside before I eat them, and sometimes I suck on them for a while, then paint my lips with them, then I pop them back into my mouth and I continue to suck on them until they melt in my mouth. It would not seem like Easter if I wasn’t able to taste the special flavor of those delectably delicious Brach’s Fiesta Malted Milk Eggs!!!

  7. I am going to point to this link on my own blog, since these are my favorite Easter candies. Not many places carry them (the jelly bean market has a strangle hold on shelf space these days).

I will say, though, that unless you put the candy in your mouth and suck on it until the outer shell is soft, they don’t test that good. Here’s my process:

    1. Mouth the candy, and suck on it like a gobstopper until the shell is soft.

    2. Crack the shell with my tongue or cheek or both, and the chocolate is super melted and delicious.

    3. Suck away the chocolate and then work the malted until it dissolves away into a delicious finish.

There really is no other good way to eat these and get all of that flavor.

  16. Fiesta is used to describe the colored ones.  There are also white ones with the same flecks of color.  They taste the same, but I still like the colored ones best.  There also the ones that are just chocolate covered like the balls.  Some years they are impossible to find and some years they cannot be found at all.  We have better luck at Walmart or Kroger’sSupermarket—however not always in the same year.  This year it is the colored ones at Kroger.  About the white on the lips—was very popular in the ‘60’s in junior high when white lipstick was also popular.

  17. These were my very favorite this year! And I love all you people who write about candy. This is like snuff for me.

Your post took me down memory lane. My best friend and I had a job together at a bank working the Friday night drive-thru window (before ATM’s were all the rage). It was our Friday night tradition to buy candy and indulge our sweet teeth inbetween the rare customers. Right before Easter we bought a bag of malted milk eggs, but the really garishly colored ones. We proceeded to use them as hilarious lipsticks just like the author…you can imagine the vivid blue lips. Then, out of the blue we had a walk-up customer at the window who was very amused. I wonder if he still remembers us and tells our story?

Anyway, this Fiesta bag of malted goodies are just terrific! I loved them and at a whole bag in one night because I just could not stop. Just the right combo of crunchy, flaky and malty. Mmmmm. I felt I had found a treasure. Around these parts there were plenty of little bags of tiny malted milk eggs but I knew those wouldn’t have the correct ratio.

I am a fan of regular malted milk balls, but I like the candy coated eggs much better because the balls usually have a waxy finish on them. YUCK.

  18. Has anyone noticed a difference in the chocolate covered Malted Milk Balls? It doesn’t seem to have the creamy chocolate that I have loved and recommended to people for over 30 yrs. Even the malt tastes different.  I have heard that they changed the recipe just on Malted Milk Balls. Can this be true?  The last two bags I bought tasted like Whoppers. I can’t even eat the last bag I bought. Please bring back my Malted Milk Balls!

  19. I just sent an email to the Brach’s company regarding how hard it is to find Brach’s Malts, their name for malted milk balls.

They are simply the best!!  Why does most every store carry Whoppers (fake chocolate - yuck!) but not Brach’s malts?

I suggested they hold a taste test—Brach’s vs. Whoppers.  Brach’s would surely win!

Maybe if more people contact them, more stores will carry Brach’s Malts.  They are amazing!

Comment by Michele on 4/30/09 at 8:26 am #
  20. Brachs has changed the formula of their once delicious malted milk balls as of March 2009. The bag now says “Brach’s Malts” on the front—NOT “Brach’s Chocolate Malts - Chocolate Covered Malted Milk Balls.” The word “Chocolate” no longer appears on the bag because they are no longer covered with chocolate. The “new and improved” version taste just like Whoppers - which are truly vile! Brach’s Malts are covered with something brown, but it is not chocolate and it tastes like wax. And it most definitely does NOT melt in your mouth. They are absolutely hideous! I shipped the entire 12 oz. bag off to their Minnesota headquarters and told them they had made a BIG mistake.

  21. Carolyn,
You are soooo right; they are hideous!  After I posted this I purchased some allegedly chocolate malted milk balls and was horribly disappointed!  How could Brach’s have allowed their name to be put on such a disgusting product?

  24. Just recently I’ve started to see the “Brach’s Malts” in more grocery stores. Stores that hadn’t carried “Brach’s Malted Milk Balls” before. Believe it or not, “Menards” is where I use to buy mine.
Why did they change the chocolate on just the malts, and not “Bridge Mix”?  I need my malt fix!

Comment by Lorraine on 8/15/09 at 4:53 pm #
  25. Is the brown coating on the bridge mix still chocolate?  The stuff on the malts is now terrible and waxy.

Comment by Connie on 2/13/10 at 2:42 pm #
  27. I agree. I just bought a bag of the Fiesta Eggs and they are horrible. The bag consisted of mostly “melted” malt centers that were hardened rather than the delicious center I’m used to. Does anyone else experience sickness from eating the flattened, melted ones or could it just be that the texture disgusts me so much that I just feel ill?

Comment by James on 2/20/10 at 4:44 pm #
  28. Thank you.  I came so close to buying Fiesta Eggs just today, just in case they were okay.  I decided not to waste my money. God, I miss my malted milk balls!

  31. Brachs Fiesta Eggs have been a part of my family for over 45 years!!!! My mom would go to Montgomery Wards to the candy counter and buy a “quarters” worth every spring..once my sister and I arrived on the scene the tradition continued. No easter basket was complete without them. As I got older and moved to Chicago it became a contest of who could find them first! The winner would buy several bags and ship them to the others. Imagine my excitement when I found them this weekend at Jewel grocery store..now imagine my disgust when I bit into one today and discovered that the recipe has been tampered with! SHAME ON YOU!! Why bother buying a company if you are not going to continue to make the well know quality products they were known for. Just change the name…because right now you are false advertising my memories..you can never fool a candy lover-save your money and NEVER buy these products again.

Thank you for writing Farley’s & Sathers Candy Company, Inc. regarding Brach’s® Malts.  Hearing from our consumers better enables us to continue to provide quality products and services.  Consumer feedback is very important to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to respond.

Farley’s & Sathers made an adjustment to this product formula.  We have continued to monitor consumer response to an initial formulation change that has occurred with this product. Based on the consumer feedback, Farley’s & Sathers has updated the formulation of the product. You will need to note the change in ingredients for the new Malts. The first ingredient will be milk chocolate.”

After 30 years of eating the same candy I am not supposed to taste the difference? More importantly why did another consumer get a response noting that YES they did change the formula…amazing that so many people now can taste a differance..get your story straight Farley… Big Girl..may I please ask for the name or code number for the customer service rep from the company..I plan to follow up on this…thanks!

  38. I just ordered 3 - 5 lb bags of Pastel Fiesta and White Fiesta eggs from Candy Favorites.com for about $116.00 after scouring LA - Ralphs, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Gelsons, etc. I hope they taste the same. Every year we look for the infamous Brach’s Fiesta Malted Milk Eggs and for the past 2 years they have become harder to find.  They are so much a part of our Easter tradition that I can’t imagine Easter without them!!!!!  I hope that Farley changes back to the old recipe and with repeated complaints maybe we will be heard!!

  43. Here’s the skinny on the Brachs Bridge Mix which of course, contain the malted milk balls. What Farley is passing off as Brach’s Bridge Mix is NOT Brach’s Bridge Mix. I’m 56 years old and have eaten Brachs candy since I could walk. The last bag of Bridge Mix I bought was absolutely terrible!!!!
Farley’s is one of those so-called candy factories like Palmers that make their nut off shoving piles of cheap candy up on shelves during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. One those days pass the Farley’s disappears.
It may say Brachs on the package but it isn’t. It’s not even close.
What Farley’s has done to the Brachs name and product is sinful and deceptive. It’s like taking the Corvette name and putting a Briggs and Stratton 2 stroke engine it and selling the name Corvette. People may buy it once but not me.
I mailed the package of bridge mix back with a note.

  44. You may remember that the company sent a letter to “Big Girl.” I received the same one, saying they updated, their formula.  They said, in the new product the first word in the ingredients would be the word “milk chocolate.”  I saw them today.  Couldn’t bring myself to buy them.  I just don’t trust them.  Any guinea pigs out there?  If you try them, and they are our old favorite, please let us know.

  45. You would think with all the unhappy candy addicts that Farley/Sathers would actually send a sample to prove that they are making the effort to change back to what quality products Brach’s would make. From the Fiesta Eggs, to the Malt’s to Bridge Mix…you have really jacked up a great family brand…change your recipes and ingridients back to what they were…QUALITY & DELICIOUS

  46. I just sent an e mail to Farley and Sathers complaining about the Fiesta malted milk eggs. I thought I am 56 years old and I am whining about my favorite candy getting screwed over!! Then I decided to google the candy and I found this. YAY!! I’m not alone !!!!!!! I love it!! Oh, I bought a bag of the “new” candy this past weekend at BILO. The shell on the outside was nasty. The food coloring was bitter enough to make me wonder if the candy had been tampered with. I’ve always loved the white mess you get on your lips when you eat them.. but these new ones dont have that.  I like the post Ryan made 4/23/08 about how to eat the Easter eggs. That is exactly how I do it and it is the best way to get all the flavors. But no more.. now the shell is no better than the cheap Palmer’s crap. The chocolate and malted milk are not that far off now. But the bad shell ruins it. I would be sick to know I just spent over 100.00 for huge bags of the stuff. What happened to Brach’s? Please get back into the candy business!! I can’t get my malted milk Easter egg fix any more because I’m not buying that Farley stuff again.

  48. I agree with everyone here.  I have enjoyed Brach’s malted eggs for over 40 years.  Every year at this time I begin my search… usually eventually finding them at Target or Walmart.  Well, after a week of searching I finally found them at Kroger today.  I noticed they were much smaller, but I went ahead and bought 5 bags.  Needless to say, I will be returning the remaining unopened 4 bags.  How disgusting!  They taste just like the cheap, nasty stuff I avoid buying.  The texture, consistency, taste… none of it came close to the original Brach’s eggs.  It crossed my mind, also, that perhaps I got hold of a ‘bad batch’.  After examining the wrapper and seeing that Farleys and Sathers are now the owners, I realized my worst nightmare has come to pass…  no more Brach’s malted eggs for me!

  49. I just read my reply from Farley and Sathers. It is the same reply Kristine above got. It was in my Spam folder. I guess that means they are sending these letters out in droves! I am a 50 something woman and have the same sentiments that the previous bloggers write.  Have enjoyed the fiesta eggs every Easter and actually start the hunt very early for the eggs.  Unfortunately had the chance to try them yesterday-they are horrible!  Have another 4 bags to return as one of the previous bloggers.  Sure feel sorry for the person that spent over $100.00 on the things.

  51. I was reading the back wrapper trying to figure out what Farley/Sather did to ruin this traditional easter candy…looks like they are making all kinds of budget cuts..because a proof reader would have caught that they spelled vegetable as “vegtable” !!!!!!! Way to run a first class operation- do us all a favor take the name brach’s off your candy packaging. I think I speak for all of us here when I say it is NOT Brach’s quality…Give some respect to the original owner and don’t try to peddle low quality candy with a high quality name…looks like the “Fiesta” is over folks :(

  52. Wow! Was I ever surprised to find this blog and comments. I am 54 and have bought the White Fiesta Easter Eggs for many many years. Well after looking in our Publix and Walmart stores and not finding them I found Fiesta PASTEL Malted easter egg candy by Brachs at Winn Dixie and bought 5 bags, thankful I had found them.
WHEN I OPENED AND ATE THE FIRST FEW, I THOUGHT EITHER WINN DIXIE HAD HELD THEM OVER FROM LAST YEAR OR THEY WERE A BAD BATCH!! They had a horrible, horrible, chemical type tatse and smell to them on top of being much smaller and the chocolate being less and horrible too!!
I wrote the company about it and received the canned response as others above. I had told them I saw on the Candyfavorite.com site (mentioned also above by kymber) that they had anasterisk and statement in small print about the formula change, it was NOT on the Fiesta ones only on the Pastel Fiesta ones. They wrote back saying yes both had been changed. I had asked them “if it ain’t broke why fix it” and they ignored that and said they would be monitoring consumers feedback. Which we all know is a bunch of BS…they have no intention of making it back to RIGHT!! So sad, to say, I brelieve the product will be done away with because of the HORRIBLE chnage they made, ruining a once favorite candy!I told them I literally gave away the rest of my bags. I don’t get why other old time candies are still the same recipe and still selling without change and taste compromise but yet this stupid company screws up a once perfectly good candy to the point of alomst for sure, extinction! And doesn’t give a damn either!!!!

  55. After having read through all your recent responses regarding the Brach’s Fiesta eggs, I suppose I should be happy I can’t find them, but I’m really sad that I’ll be missing them this year.  Even if I do get some sent to me, I now know that the recipe has been tampered with, so what’s the point…no sense in having any if they aren’t going to be the goodness I remember.  How Sad! I hope that Farley/Sather gets the message and brings back an Easter tradition.
