Airheads Xtreme Sour Belts

I’m keen on sour things and I guess it’s pretty surprising that I’ve never had Airheads, let alone anything else in their line.

I saw these at the 7-11 and thought they were so intensely pretty that I had to buy them.

imageIn fact, I thought they were so pretty when I was taking their picture, I made them into a woven piece. I know, I shouldn’t be playing with my food.

The colors are vibrant: red,  yellow, green, orange and aqua. The flavor, as far as I can tell, is strawberry or possibly green apple or maybe a cross between the two. I dissected a couple of the belts to figure out if there was a difference in flavor between the colors and I couldn’t tell. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t, I just couldn’t figure it out.

They’re sour, but not in a toxic way. They’ve got a dusting of sugar crystals to keep them from sticky, but they’re soft and chewy. The best thing about them is that the flavor lasts all the way through the chew. Some chews lose their initial flavor, like they’ve been dusted or something when you chew them. But these are tangy and sweet all the way to the end.

The only complain I have is that as an adult I find them a little hard to eat. The sugar gets on my hands and I don’t want to eat the whole thing at once, so I’m left holding it or pulling it apart. As a kid, I’d probably think they were the coolest thing in the world and wouldn’t mind the sticky fingers in the slightest.

Interesting note: AirHeads are made by the same company that makes Mentos - Perfetti van Melle. The company is Italian, but the Xtremes were made in Spain.

  3. wooo that looks delicious. I adore sour straws and jolly rancher screamin’ sours—so I will have to try these out if I can find them. :D Thanks for reviewing them!

  4. i agree they’re a little messy and hard to pull apart, but these are the kind of thing i eat way too fast anyway. i’m the kid who’d chew the entire pack of big league chew and spit it out 5 minutes later. i’ve seen these in gummy bulk bins at candy stores, but i’m glad they’re selling them like this.

love the weave you made. you should make a whole basket out of them!  wink

  5. The regular Airheads are really good. I really like the mystery white flavor. I don’t know what it’s supposed to taste like, but it’s awesome.

Alikat - I haven’t tried Jolly Rancher screamin’ sours, I’ll keep an eye out for them.

Sallie - I still buy 6packs of chicklets at the 99cent store, I can go through a whole pack in an afternoon.

Jamie - I keep hearing about this mystery flavor, I really need to try that.

jozjozjoz - maybe I should make a calendar of candy creations!

  8. for someone who grew up on Laffy Taffy and Tangy Taffy, Airheads have an odd texture to them.  It makes sense that they are made by the Mentos people, as they are similar in texture to the inside of a Mentos.  and the mystery flavor is good.

  9. I’m not a sour candy fan, but My! these are lovely.

PS - I think Mentos are originally from a Dutch company, Cybele.

  11. I saw these at the Checker autoparts store earlier. Then I saw them again at Safeway tonight and picked them up. I used to like airheads taffy chew strips so I figured these would be good. Well, I was right. Quite tasty esp. since I love sour stuff. Does’t seem to taste much like the airheads taffy but that’s not a bad thing. Good stuff. I put these up with my sour twizzlers and twizzlers rainbow strips. Good stuff but a little more pricey for these airheads. 1.30 at safeway.

  12. I saw these at the store and didnt get them at first, then I came back and it was the last pack.  I cant get over how pretty they are.  I think getting these will be a new obsession.  I really like the sour taste, it doesnt taste regular sour but something else…

  13. I am trying to find out if the Mentos Fruit candies are a peanut/tree nut free snack.  I don’t know where to call since there are no 800 numbers listed anywhere.  I have a child with severe food allergies and there is no allergen information listed.  I need to know if it is processed in a plant that may cause cross contamination.  Help?  How do I find this out?

  15. I LOVE airheads Xtreme only. I’m not much of a candy eater, though. Sour candy is my thing! They are quick to eat…definitely EASY, (duh!) and, they are a great snack when you just want to satisfy your stomach. Sweet!

(This website is really… AWESOME! Great job here! I love seeing what other people think. I also love commenting. I am a SUPER young blogger and I truly believe that it is a GREAT way to equal out ideas!!! :D)

  16. At school, they sell candy afterschool and all my friends are obsessed over these Sour Belts.
Personally, they never tasted sour to me… Not even tart. So I have no idea why they call it sour.
