Pretty Flower ChocolateName: Jasmine Green Tea Chocolate The prettiest tasting chocolate I’ve ever had. These medallions of milk chocolate are a little on the sweet size, but have a good mouth feel. There’s slight bit of graininess to it towards the end. But the taste is the real winner here. It’s milk chocolate, but has the fragrance of jasmine tea. It’s not clingy or soapy feeling, simply floral and clean. The flavor lingers, like a mint would a half hour later. It’s not really the kind of candy you’d idly snack on, it’s more of a finishing chocolate. Something that you eat at the very end of the meal. I plan to try the other flavors. Cocoa Pete’s Maltimus MaximusName: Maltimus Maximus I love malt. I love really good malted milk balls. I will buy Ovaltine and eat it by the spoonful. I saw this candy bar while walking around on a rainy night in New York and thought, “this is the candy bar for me!” Oh, it isn’t. It’s clever. It’s cute, but lacks the real malt punch that I desire. It’s made by Cocoa Pete’s Chocolate Bars, they guy who says that he brought us Pete’s Wicked Ale. This is a guy who should know malt! Opening the package it is a bar divided into four domes that can easily be broken off for easy consumage. Two domes equals one serving. It is a nice, if a little sweet milk chocolate with malt crunchies throughout. No matter which way I ate it (sucking on it until the chocolate melted away and left me with the malty bits) or crunching it down I never got that malty taste. This is not the malt bar for me (I’m not even sure malt bars exist), but I’m willing to give his other bars a try. They’re a little pricey. Rating: 4 out of 10 Morinanga Hi-CROWNName: Hi-CROWN Chocolate I was attracted by the European cigarette box styling of this and expected to open it and have a wave of clove scent wash over me. However, inside was much more delightful. There were six chocolate wafers, each individually wrapped about the size of a thick stick of gum. They were scored in the middle, so you could break them in half. The chocolate is smooth, buttery and very strong. Not too sweet though just a tad waxy to the mouth before it melts. Not at all bitter, but with a good solid acidic kick to it. The price is quite appropriate for other types of premium chocolates and I will purchase this again. In fact, as a stocking stuffer, I would certainly prefer this to one of those chocolate oranges. The packaging is lovely and really sells the product. It’s protective and quite a conversation starter. Rating: 8 out of 10 Super Happy Cow CubesName: Super Butter Caramel I’ve never had better caramels than my grandmother’s and for commercially produced ones I’ve usually opted for See’s. However, I loved this package. The fat little cows just made me laugh. Inside the package is a tray that fits two caramels across, tiny little cubes that resemble chicken bullion more than candy. They’re a bit grainy but definitely have the super-butter element to their credit. When I went back to the same store, I couldn’t find them there on the shelf. As far as recommendation goes, if they were sitting around, I’d eat them. Rating: 5 out of 10 Saturday, April 9, 2005
Adventures in CandyLet’s face it, there are a lot of sweets out there. There are the classic favorites that we remember from our childhood and then there is the global marketplace. I live in one of those international cities where I come into contact with candy from all over the world. Generally I’ve stuck to my own favorites, but now I’m going to share my experiences with the world. I’ll try to have at least a photo of everything I document here and the basics on price and size. My taste is not the same as everyone else, so I’ll try to be objective. Keep watching and I’ll try to have fun new stuff up as often as possible. |
Meticulously photographed and documented reviews of candy from around the world. And the occasional other sweet adventures. Open your mouth, expand your mind.
